Open Linguistics 2017; 3: 396–418 Research Article Gianfilippo Terribili* Dēnkard III Language Variation and the Defence of Socio-Religious Identity in the Context of Early-Islamic Iran https://doi.org/10.1515/opli-2017-0020 Received January 25, 2017; accepted August 10, 2017 Abstract: The aim of the present paper is to illustrate as a case study, the linguistic and stylistic peculiarities characterizing the third book of the Dēnkard, one of the most authoritative texts in Zoroastrian Pahlavi literature (9th-10 th CE). The analysis will consider these features as part of a coherent system, styled to serve the dialectic strategies pursued by the Zoroastrian high priests in response to the pressures their own community was facing in the early Islamic period. In order to provide a more comprehensive overview on DkIII language distinctiveness, the research will underline the outward/inward dynamics, addressing both the relation of this theological dialectic with the surrounding socio-cultural environment and the leading- role claims of a group within a politically subordinated community. Keywords: Middle Persian, Pahlavi Literature, Iranian Philology 1 Introduction In tune with the present volume, seeking to integrate linguistic data concerning a specific text within the socio-cultural dynamics of the period in which a specific textual production flourished, may yield extremely interesting elements for scholars aiming to survey the development of broader acculturation processes. Within Iranian history, the early Islamic period offers a very rich field of investigation for sociolinguistic studies; the abundance of sources in our possession is in fact due to the activity of the multifaceted constituents of that society, while the presence of various and interacting agents offers a remarkable opportunity to adopt multiple point of views. -

Critical Studies in Texts & Programs of Human Sciences, Institute for Humanities and Cultural Studies (IHCS) Monthly Journal, Vol. 21, No. 1, Spring 2021, 23-40 Review of Translation of “Šahrestānīhā ī ērānšahr, A Middle Persian Text on Late Antique Geography, Epic and History” in Persian Shima Jaafari Dehaghi* Abstract Šahrestānīhā ī ērānšahr is a Middle Persian treatise about the historical geography of Sasanian cities in Iran. So far, this treatise has been translated and published in Persian by Hedayat, Oriyan, Taffazoli, and Daryaee. In 2002, Daryaee published this text with Persian and English translation, and in 2009, Jalilian translated Daryaee’s book into Persian. In the present study, we examined Jalilian’s translation of this treatise. It is noteworthy that Jalilian mentioned in his book that the translation of the Middle Persian text is from Daryaee himself. To make the review more accurate and to compare it with other translations, Daryaee and Taffazoli’s translations are cited and compared. First, the transliteration of each sentence is mentioned, and then the translation is written in chronological order. Then, the review of the translations is mentioned. It can be concluded that each of the translations of Middle Persian texts into Persian has new points that, in turn, will help us to better understand Middle Persian texts and ancient Iranian thought. SOME REMARKS ON KARDER'S INSCRIPTION OF THE KA'BE-YE ZARDOST (PAHLAVICA III)(1) GIKYO ITO Prof. Emer. of Kyoto University Since its finding in 1939, Karder's Inscription of the Ka`be-ye Zardost (KKZ)(2) has invited various discussions linguistic or religio-historical and much ingenuity has been spent in trying to solve the difficulties. Thus some of them have been solved,(3) but some are not and sometimes strange miscal- culations still prevail in their treatments. DENKARD, Book 9 Details of Nasks 1-3, 21 (The Original Gathic Texts) Translated by Edward William West From Sacred Books of the East, Oxford University Press, 1897. Last updated Mar 2, 2021. 1 Foreword The Denkard is a ninth century encyclopedia of the Zoroastrian religion, but with extensive quotes from materials thousands of years older, including (otherwise) lost Avestan texts. It is the single most valuable source of information on this religion aside from the Avesta. This volume contains detailed contents of the Gathic Nasks of the Ancient Canon, much of which is now lost in the original Avesta. Note however, that (as Dr. West says) “it is abundantly clear to the practised translator that Avesta phrases often underlie the Pahlavi passages which seem to be quoted at length from the original Nasks, especially in Dk. 9; but, for some of the details mentioned, there may be no older authority than a Pahlavi commentary, and this should be ever borne in mind by the sceptical critic in search of anachronisms.” I have added some comments in {} and [[]], mainly to facilitate searches. Spelling of technical terms have also been normalized to conform with other texts in this series. Wherever possible I have used the spellings of F.M. Kotwal and J. Boyd, A Guide to the Zoroastrian Religion, Scholars Press, 1982. The original S.B.E. volumes used a system of transliteration which was misleading to the casual reader, and no longer adopted. As an example “chinwad” (bridge) (Kotwal and Boyd) was transliterated in S.B.E. -

Iranian Studies, volume 45, number 2, March 2012 Touraj Daryaee Food, Purity and Pollution: Zoroastrian Views on the Eating Habits of Others This article discusses the use of food as a mode of differentiation and identification according to Zoroastrian Middle Persian and Persian texts of the late antique period. In these texts, the list of foods consumed by Arabs and Indians are juxtaposed with that of the Iranian diet, and each group is given anthropological treatment. The article contends that the Zoroastrian dietary law, based on the Middle Persian texts, provides a mode of purity and impurity vis-à-vis others. Finally, the article touches upon the idea of moderation and the consumption of wine as dealt with in some Middle Persian sources. Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you what you are. Brillat-Savarin1 Different societies have different codes and laws and dietary restrictions with regard to food consumption. These codes and laws reflect a set of values which usually dis- tinguishes one civilization from another. These codes, rules, and laws which provide a collective mentality are slow to change,2 even when there is the adoption of a new set of religious laws as in the case of the Iranian civilization in the medieval period. Iranian civilization before the Islamic conquest received its dietary laws mainly from the Zoroastrian religion. Zoroastrian law was not really concerned Touraj Daryaee is Howard C. In 270/2-73 A.D., after the death of Sabuhr I, Ohrmezd-Ardasir ascended the Sasanian throne as Ohrmezd I. Sabuhr’s res gestae mention his position as crown-prince; however, in the inscriptions of Kerdir and in the coin legends he bears, as Great King of the Sasanian Empire, the throne-name Ohrmezd, which points to the most prominent god of Zoroastrianism. Ohrmezd-Ardasir’s outstanding position within the royal family can clearly be seen from two passages of Sabuhr’s inscription: He not only has the leading posi- tion among the four known sons of Sabuhr I in the latter’s order of precedence from the point of view of protocol, but he also bears the title of ‘Great King of the Armenians’ and is honoured by a fire endowment like his sister Adur-Anahid and his two brothers Sabuhr of Mesan and Narseh of Sagestan. Excluded from this endowment is only Ohrmezd-Ardasir’s brother Wahram, the king of Gelan. Sur- prisingly, however, Wahram heads the ranks of brothers in the second list of descendants of Sabuhr’s res gestae. Here, Sabuhr’s sons appear not according to their position of protocol, but to their age: Wahram, Sabuhr, Ohrmezd-Ardasir and Narseh. In other words, Ohrmezd-Ardasir was not made heir to the throne as Sabuhr’s eldest, but as his third eldest son. -

195 ART. X.—Some Account of the Arabic Work entitled " Nihd- yatu'l-irab fi akhbdri'l-Furs iva'l-'Arab," particularly of that part which treats of the Persian Kings. By EDWARD Gr. To the curious book of which the full title stands at the head of this article, I have already alluded in my communi- cation to the Journal of January, 1899, on The Sources of Dawlatshdh, pp. 51-53. I now propose to give such account of its contents as is possible within the limits here prescribed. For this purpose I have made use of the Cambridge Codex (belonging to the Burckhardt Collection) marked QQ. 225. Though the book is a rare one, at least three other manuscripts are known — two in the British Museum (see the old Arabic Catalogue, pp. 418 and 581)l and one (marked A. 1741) at Gotha. The last was used by Professor Noldeke, in his reference to the Nihayat, at pp. 475-476 of his excellent Geschichte . der Sasaniden. He describes it as "in the main a quite arbitrary recension of Dinawari, though here [namely, in the Romance of Bahrain Chubin] it had before it an essentially fuller text than this," and briefly characterizes it as " das seltsame, ziemlich schwindelhafte Werk." When I first lighted on the book at Cambridge, not being aware of the existence of other copies, or of Noldeke's unfavourable judgment as to its value, I was elated beyond measure, believing that I had at last found the substance of that 1 These MSS., marked Add.
