Born in 1899 in England, Noel Coward began acting at the age of eleven and wrote his first play when he was still in his teens. As actor, director and playwright, he had his first triumph with The Vortex, which was produced with great success in London in 1924 and in New York the following year. He was one of the most popular, prolific and diverse British artists of his time. At one point in the late 1920s, four of his plays ran concurrently in London's West End. His diverse output included the revues This Year of Grace and Wordsand Music, the operetta Bitter Sweet, the dramas Cavalcade and This Happy Breed and the classic comedies Blithe Spirit, Designfor Living and Private Lives. In addition, he wrote such notable songs as "Mad Dogs and Englishmen," "If Love Were All" and "Mad About the Boy," as well as the screenplay and music for the Academy Award-winning motion picture In Which We Serve (which he also co-directed and starred in). David Lean's 1945 film Brief Encounter, adapted from one of Coward's one-act plays, has become a classic. Coward continued to write and perform through the 1960s, appearing everywhere from national television to Las Vegas stages and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 1970. Coward died on March 26, 1973 at his home in Jamaica.

Mad About the Boy: Noel Coward on Film

BAM Rose Cinemas' film series pays tribute to Coward's extensive artistic legacy by illustrating his talent as an actor ( Our Man in Havana, Bunny Lake Is Missing, The Scoundrel and Astonished Heart), playwright (Cavalcade, Brief Encounter, Private Lives, Blithe Spirit and Design for Living) and composer, (two film versions of his operetta, Bitter Sweet). One film in the retrospective demonstrates all of these talents; In Which We Serve, for which Coward was co-director, co-star, score composer and screenwriter, earned him a special Oscar recognizing "outstanding production achievement." Mad About the Boy: Noel Coward on Film is part of BAM Rose Cinemas' repertory film program, BAMcinematek, which features daily screenings of classic American and foreign films, documentaries, retrospectives and special festivals. One of the four screens at the state-of-the-art film complex is devoted exclusively to BAMcinematek repertory film programming.

Mad About the Boy: Noel Coward on Television

The Museum of Television & Radio will celebrate Noel Coward's centenary with a five-part screening series that will feature highlights of his television work, including his supernatural farce Blithe Spirit and This Happy Breed in which he plays the head of a middle-class South London family. Noel Coward had already become a legendary name on London and New York stages by the time television was invented. The new medium was only too eager to adapt his witty and sophisticated repertoire giving Coward a chance to perform some of his best known works for an American audience. The variety show format helped introduce Coward's talents as a songwriter and singer to a whole new generation, notably in his teaming with Mary Martin in Together with Music. Also included will be interviews with Coward and Edward R. Murrow and Dick Cavett, which feature his acerbic observations and droll storytelling manner. During the same period, Mad About the Boy: Noel Coward on Television will also screen at The Museum of Television & Radio in Los Angeles in conjunction with a Coward film screening the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Mad About the Boy: Noel Coward on Television at The Museum of Television & Radio in both New York and Los Angeles is part of the museum's "Salute to Excellence" series presented in conjunction with Entertainment Tonight.

Next Wave on Film

October 5 Lloyd Bacon's Moby Dick (1930), 75 min., 5:30, 8:30pm October 6 John Huston's Moby Dick (1956), 116 min., 5:30, 8:30pm October 12 Life is a Dream (1986), 100 min., 5:30, 8:30pm October 19 First Name: Carmen (1983), 85 min., 5:30, 8:30pm October 26 Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979), 107 min., 5:30, 8:30pm

Moby Dick (1930), 75 min. Directed by Lloyd Bacon With John Barrymore, Joan Bennett, Walter Long

John Barrymore plays Captain Ahab in this "Hollywood" version of Herman Melville's 1851 classic novel. Embellishments to the plot include a battle between Ahab and his stepbrother for the hand of the minister's daughter, which indirectly results in the loss of his leg to the great white whale. His beloved is repelled by his handicap, prompting his single-minded pursuit of revenge on the whale.

Moby Dick (1956), 116 min. Directed by John Huston With Gregory Peck, Richard Basehart, Orson Well es

Ray Bradbury ·wrote the screenplay for this John Huston-directed faithful adaptation of Herman Melville's masterpiece about a sea captain's obsession with exacting revenge on a great white whale that took his leg. Gregory Peck, cast against type as the spiteful Captain Ahab, gives a new interpretation of this well-known character.

Life is a Dream (1986), 100 min. Directed by Raoul Ruiz With Roch Leibovici, Laurence Cortadellas

Ruiz's baroque mix of revolutionary politics, pop culture and semiotics is loosely based on the play Life is a Dream by Pedro Calderon de la Barca. In the 17th century classic, a young prince learns that life is just a dream from which we wake when we die, and that dreams may be as real as life. Ruiz substitutes movies for dreams and makes his prince a Chilean revolutionary who must attend the cinema daily in an effort to reconstruct his memory. more ... First Name: Carmen (Prenom: Carmen) (1983), 85 min. Directed by Jean-Luc Godard In French with English subtitles With Maruschka Detmers, Jacques Bonnaffe, Myriem Roussel, Jean-Luc Godard

A beautiful young woman enlists her uncle, a mentally ill film director past his prime (Godard playing "Uncle Jean"), to create a film that, unbeknownst to him, is merely a front for a bank robbery. Godard's version of the original Merimee novel uses the music of Beethoven rather than Bizet's famous opera score.

Frank Capra dominated the box office throughout Hollywood's Golden Era and won three Oscars for Best Director over the course of his career. Capra's films were enormously popular for their snappy storytelling, idealistic heroes, "triangle dramas"(a drama with three main characters) and sentimental style. Frank Capra: A Vision of the 30s features his most significant social and political comedies from that era - films that demonstrated his faith in the common man's struggle for the American Dream.

Frank Capra: A Vision of the 30s begins on October 4 with a special screening of Kenneth Browser's 1997 documentary, Frank Capra's American Dream. American Dream is narrated by Ron Howard and contains interviews with Robert Altman, Martin Scorcese and Oliver Stone, among others. The Capra series continues with his early, silent classics The Matinee Idol (1928), Rain or Shine (1930) and (1930). One of his most significant films, It Happened One Night (1934), starring Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert, will be screened on December 6; it was the first film to win Academy Awards in every major category. Other Capra films in the series include brilliant comedies such as (1931) and Platinum Blonde (1931), and beloved social fables such as Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936) and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939). The complete schedule follows.

About Frank Capra Frank Capra (1897-1991) was born in Sicily and immigrated to the United States with his family in 1903. He worked his way through college, received a degree in engineering and joined the army to fight in World War I. He returned optimistic, but unemployed; without any prior experience, talked his way into directing his first one-reel film, Ballad of Fultah Fisher's Boarding House (1922). The success of that short film led him to work on three silent features with the famous vaudevillian, Harry Langdon. In 1928, Capra started working steadily for , then a struggling studio. While at Columbia, Capra met writer (1897-1955). Together they made 10 films - all instant hits. In 1934, Capra achieved enormous success for It Happened One Night (1934), an early masterpiece of "screwball comedy." Capra directed what could be considered the pinnacle of his career in 1946, It's A Wonderful Life, starring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed. In 1971, Capra published his autobiography, The Name Above the Title (Macmillan, 1971) in which he described his influential storytelling method: "When I see a crowd, I see a collection of free individuals: each a king or queen; each a story that would.fill a book; each an island of humanity."

Federico Fellini was one of the most influential filmmakers of his time and one of America's favorite foreign art film directors. He was nominated for and won numerous awards, including four Academy Awards for Best Foreign Film and a lifetime achievement Oscar, presented to him in 1992. A highly personal and visionary filnunaker, Fellini most often mined the riches of his O\m history and dreams to create fantastic, allusive, absorbing films-all feasts for the heart and mind.

Fellini's Feast begins on November 23 with Fellini Satyricon ( 1969), one of the director's most audacious films, which revels in the excesses of ancient Rome (and the less ancient I 960s). The series continues with Fellini 's Roma ( 1972), a fond remembrance of the Rome of Fellini· s youth. Amarcord (1974), arguably Fellini's best-loved film and one that won him his fourth Oscar, will be screened on December 14. Other films in the series include Fellini's Casanova (1976), 8 1 12 (1963), his most personal and unorthodox film, and City of Women (1980). The complete schedule follows.

About Federico Fellini Federico Fellini (1920-1994) was born in Rimini, Italy into a provincial middle-cbss family. At the age of seven, he ran away from boarding school to follow a traveling circus. He \\'as returned within days, but the experience left a lasting impression, becoming a rich source for his bter filmrnaking imagery. In the late 1930s he ventured to Florence and Rome, ostensibly to study, but in fact working as a proofreader and cartoonist for comic books and satirical publications. In 1940 he began writing for radio and collaborating on film scripts, including a radio series, Cico and Pallina, which cast a young acting student, Giuletta Masina, in the role of Pallina. Masina became his wife in 1943 and was frequently featured in his films. BAMRose Ci nemm3s Fellini 2

While numing an arcade in Rome after its liberation, Fellini met director Roberto Rossellini, who invited Fellini to collaborate \Yith him on a documentary, Open City (1945). Fellini went on to collaborate on Paisan (1946) and L 'Amore ( 1948). Fellini's first solo attempts at directing, Variery Lights (1951) and The White Sheik (1952), were commercial failures. In 1953 he made The Young and the Passionate, and its success established him as a director of international import. He won even greater acclaim with La Strada (1954), his first Oscar winner; The Nights ofCabiria (1957), another Oscar winner; La Dolce Vita (1960), the 1961 Grand Prize winner at Ca1mes: and 8 1/2 ( 1963 ), his third Oscar-wi1ming film. He went on to direct more than a dozen other films, continuing to experiment and to explore the themes and obsessions that so occupied him-:rnd provided the tantalizing and delightful material for his unique creations.

Humphrey Bogart is best known as the brooding and sardonic "Bogie." He was the gangster, the gumshoe, and the gold-digger-but always with an underlying soulfulness that belied the surface bravado. This ambiguous combination created an enduring icon of American masculinity that left an indelible mark on film history.

Bogie at BAM begins on December 4 withMcirked Woman (1937), one of Bogart's early films from his prolific gangster period. The series continues on December 5 with Dark Victory (1939), the classic weepie with Bette Davis. Screening January 15 is To Have and Have Not (1944), the fiery film that introduced Bogie to his future wife, Lauren Bacall. To Have and Have Not is based on a Hemingway story about a charter boat operator and a sexy French Resistance agent. Other films in the series include They Drive by Night ( 1940), The Maltese Falcon ( 1941 ), Sabrina (1954), The Big Sleep (1946), High Sierra (1941) and In a Lonely Place (1950). The complete schedule follows.

About Humphrev Bogart Humphrey Bogart ( 1899-1957) was born in New York City to a noted Manhattan surgeon and a successful magazine illustrator. He attended the Phillips Academy in Andover, MA where he was preparing to attend medical school at Yale before being expelled for disciplinary problems. He enlisted in the navy during WWI, and was injured during a shelling of the USS Leviathan, resulting in a partially paralyzed upper lip and consequent speech idiosyncrasy that later became his trademark. Upon his return to New York, he wanted to work in theater, and a family friend arranged a job as an office boy. Bogart worked his way up to road company and stage manager more ... BAMRose Cinemas Bogie at BAM 2 f positions, decided to switch to acting in 1920 and played a number of unmemorable roles throughout that decade.

In 1930 he made his film debut in a short called Broadway's Like That. He was cast in a number_ of minor roles at various studios, but kept returning to Broadway, where he got his break in 1935 when he was cast in The Petrified Forest.Due to the insistence of costar Leslie Howard, he was subsequently cast in the 1936 film version. He appeared in some 28 features between 1936 and 1940, mostly in gangster roles. In 1941 Bogart teamed with John Huston, first in High Sierra, which Huston wrote, then in The Maltese Falcon, Huston's directorial debut. The roles gave Bogart a chance to develop deeper characters, and "Bogie" was born. He achieved widespread and enduring popularity, which he sustained with successes such as Casablanca, The Big Sleep, Key Largo and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. During the 1950s he extended his range even further in such diverse films as In a Lonely Place, The African Queen (for which he won an Oscar), The Caine M11tiny, Sabrina and The Barefoot Contessa. In March 1956, just after the release of The Harder They Fall, he underwent surgery for esophageal cancer. He died in his sleep on January 14, 1957.

Hangover Square hasn't been shown publicly in New York in some time; the big screen and a good sound system like BAM Rose Cinemas' are essential to experience this beautifully crafted movie properly."

On Wednesday, January 5 at 6pm, Cinemachat presents The Underground Orchestra (1998), directed by Heddy Honingmann. "Underground Orchestra is a very moving documentary about a group of musicians who play in the Paris metro, nearly all of whom are political exiles," commented Stein. "It is the most recent work of one of Europe's leading young filmmakers-Honigmann-who is not nearly as well known in America as she deserves to be. This film has only been shown once in this area, briefly in Manhattan, and New Yorkers are fortunate to get this second chance to catch it at BAM Rose Cinemas."
