UNIVERSITY HIGH SCHOOL PRESENTS THE SPRING MUSICAL: Guys and Dolls Music and Lyrics by: Frank Loesser Book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows APRIL 25, 26 & 27, 2013 AT 7:30 P.M. A smash hit that first ignited Broadway in 1950, Guys and Dolls is a fun-loving musical set in the New York underworld of the 1920's. It tells the story of Nathan Detroit, a gambler who runs a famous "floating" craps game, much to the distress of his long- suffering fiancée, the Hot Box Nightclub singer, Adelaide Adams. Nathan finds himself short on the cash he needs to keep his craps game afloat, so he bets $1000 on what he believes is a sure thing: Sky Masterson, a high rolling, suave gambler boasts that he could get any "doll" he wanted, so Nathan bets him that he can't get the local "Save a Soul" missionary, Sarah Brown, to come to dinner with him in Havana. Sarah is reluctant, so Sky in turn guarantees her that he will provide twelve "genuine sinners" for her failing prayer meeting if she joins him for dinner. So, Sky needs sinners to win Sarah, Sarah needs Sky to help save her mission, Adelaide wants to turn her fourteen-year engagement into a wedding, and Nathan is just trying to keep his craps game afloat, keep Adelaide happy, and not get arrested by the local cops. Packed with some of Broadway's most beloved songs, such as "Sit Down You're Rockin the Boat," "Fugue for Tinhorns," and "Luck Be a Lady," Guys and Dolls is an exuberant musical guaranteed to delight! Sky is able to adapt to any situation but ready to reel off prepared anecdotes regarding his view of the world. Despite his failings, Sky is immensely likeable and oozes style. Songs: I’ll Know, My Time of Day, I’ve Never Been, Luck be a Lady, Happy Ending Nathan Detroit A feckless and humorous manipulator, Nathan is the facilitator of illegal gambling in town. He maintains a distance by acting only as a broker; seldom a gambler. A consummate businessman with divided loyalties; he paciﬁes his ﬁancé Adelaide with vague promises of a marriage ‘some time’ in the future. Songs: The Oldest Established, Sue Me, Happy Ending Nicely Nicely Johnson Nicely Nicely is an eccentric gambler and one of Nathan’s closest associates. Frank Capra and the Image of the Journalist in American Films http://ijpc.org/Capra%20speech.htm Frank Capra and the Image of the Journalist in American Film Remarks at USC Literary Luncheon, March 27, 2002, Doheny Memorial Library, by Joe Saltzman Frank Capra was one of the most popular American directors in film history. So it may not be surprising that Capra and his writers were responsible for much of what Americans thought they knew about their journalists in the twentieth century. Americans’ perceptions of journalism and journalists were indelibly imprinted on the national psyche through the popular Capra films, which brought reporters, columnists, editors and media tycoons to flesh-and-blood life from the late 1920s through the 1930s and 1940s and into the early 1950s. No one synthesized the images of the journalist found in other films, novels and Broadway plays better than Frank Capra and his writers. Capra’s familiar images still focus our thinking today — whether they be the energetic, opportunistic reporter who would do anything for a scoop; or the tough, sarcastic sob sister trying desperately to outdo her male competition; or the cynical big-city newspaper editor committed to getting the story first even if it means strangling his reporters to do it; or the morally bankrupt, ruthless publisher who uses the power of the press for his or her own ends. These images of the journalist, complete with every cliché of the newspaper world, originated in hundreds of novels and silent films in the early years of the twentieth century. They were polished up, honed, and presented to the public in unforgettable ways by Capra and his writers.
