A Musical Fable of Broadway Based on a Story and Characters of August 30 & 31 ~ September 1 & 2 July 14 & 15 ~ July 23 & 24 www.TheVillagesEntertainment.com NOTE FROM DIRECTOR

Welcome to The Legends of Broadway Series!

Our goal at Victory Productions is to create innovative and exciting productions of some the greatest musicals of all time, especially for you, our beloved Villages audience. We began this series with the classic South Pacific, and now bring you one of the classiest, sassiest, and brassiest of them all - ’s love letter to Broadway .

Based on the stories of Damon Runyon, GUYS AND DOLLS tells two love stories: the lopsided romance of gambler Sky Masterson and missionary Sister Sarah Brown, and the long-suffering nightclub chanteuse Miss Adelaide’s attempts to finally marry her fiancé of 14 years, the lovable but commitment-phobic Nathan Detroit. Surrounding them are the funniest, most colorful assortment of gamblers, gangsters, showgirls, and Broadway lowlifes you are likely to see.

GUYS AND DOLLS is one of the most popular and often revived musicals of all time, and for good reason. Its combination of character, wit, and heart, along with a score that features , Adelaide’s Lament, I’ve Never Been in Love Before, and Sit Down You’re Rockin’ the Boat have earned it a place as a Broadway Legend.

Thanks for being part of our audience - we hope to bring you more of your favorite shows in the time to come, with some of the most talented performers you’ll ever see. Enjoy the show! ALAN BRUUN - DIRECTOR CREDITS

FRANK LOESSER One of America’s great composer/lyricists, Frank Loesser began his songwriting career during the Depression as a lyricist, contributing songs to Broadway revues and nightclub acts. His work with composer Irving Actman in the 1936 revue THE ILLUSTRATOR’S SHOW led to a songwriting contract in Hollywood, where he spent the next eleven years working with such composers as , , and Hoagy Carmi- chael. Some of his film songs from that period include “,” “Jingle Jangle Jingle” and “I Don’t Want To Walk Without You.” The first song for which Loesser wrote both words and music was “Praise The Lord And Pass The Ammunition,” written during his World War II service. His Hollywood work after the war includ- ed the hit songs “Spring Will Be A Little Late This Year,” “A Slow Boat To China,” and the 1949 Oscar-winning song “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” In 1948 Loesser was approached by fledgling Broadway producers and Ernest Martin to write music and lyrics to ’s libretto for an adaptation of the classic play Charley’s Aunt. The new musical, which starred , was called WHERE’S CHARLEY? and was a hit. This led to Loesser’s next show, the hugely influential and successful GUYS AND DOLLS in 1950, also produced by Feuer and Martin, with a script by Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling. In 1956 Loesser wrote the libretto, music and lyrics for his next show, , adapted from ’s play, They Knew What They Wanted. JO SWERLING Jo Swerling: Born in Russia in 1897, Jo Swerling was a playwright, screenwriter and vaudeville sketch writer. Mr. Swerling’s long career began as a reporter and feature writer in New York and Chicago.

ABE BURROWS After studying to be a doctor and an accountant, Abe Burrows had a career in sales before becoming a suc- cessful radio script writer and writer/performer of musical parody numbers.
