  • Rebranding “Made in India” Through Cultural Sustainability – Exploring and Expanding Indian Perspectives
REBRANDING “MADE IN INDIA” THROUGH CULTURAL SUSTAINABILITY – EXPLORING AND EXPANDING INDIAN PERSPECTIVES Thesis for Two year Master, 30 ECTS Textile Management Monica Boța-Moisin Raphael Schreiber Thesis Number: 2021.7.01 Title: Rebranding “Made in India” through Cultural Sustainability - Exploring and Expanding Indian Perspectives Year of publication: 2021 Authors: Monica Boța-Moisin and Raphael Schreiber Supervisor: Hanna Wittrock Abstract This exploratory study is a first attempt to translate the Indian cultural context from a socio- cultural, and legal perspective by identifying the values attributed to Indian textile craftsmanship by Indian textile and fashion stakeholders, and how their perspective is influenced by the global recognition and perception of Indian textile crafts and connotation of “Made in India”. At the same time the study investigates the meaning of “sustainability” in the Indian cultural context, in relation to textile craftsmanship, and how this relates to the Western concept of “sustainability”. Through field research in conjunction with a series of in- depth unstructured interviews, this study reveals that Cultural Sustainability is the dominating narrative in the Indian cultural context due to the prevalence of culturally embedded sustainability practices and the role of textile craftsmanship in sustaining livelihood, being a unique exercise of positioning Indian textile craftsmanship within a framework of cultural heritage as a valuable source of knowledge for sustainable practices in the fashion and textile industry. Unique about this study are the India-centric approach combined with the ethnicity of the subjects interviewed - who are, without exception, Indian nationals, whose work, voice and reputation are shaping India's contemporary textile craft-sustainability narrative (being referred to as the “Indian textiles and fashion elite”) and the framing of traditional craftsmanship from a legal perspective, introducing the notion of legal protection of traditional textile knowledge and traditional cultural expressions.

  • Influence of Television Commercials on Clothing in India
Influence of television commercials on clothing in India Barbara Mitra In this article I aim to show that there are some major changes in India because of television regarding clothing. Whilst there is cultural fusion of Indian and western style clothing, this fusion is happening in different ways for different groups. Status in clothing (Campbell 49) is also reflecting other divides. The way that people respond to what they see on television commercials may depend on their gender, age, class or whether they live in a rural or urban context. The research is based on a ten year project which began with in-depth ethnography conducted in India. Most of the research was conducted in the North East of India, though some was conducted in Delhi, Bombay and Bangalore. The ethnography included living with Indian families for long periods of time (ranging from six weeks to six months). Other research methods were also used including questionnaires, interviews and focus discussion groups. Television commercials are having an influence in India and this is clearly seen and noted by those living amongst the changes. Clothing is one visual representation of this. For example, Chake from Malthi village noted that fashion had changed in his village, along with people’s attitudes and he believed that this was mainly due to the influence of television commercials. ‘Television commercials have a great influence on rural culture. Earlier people used to live in a different manner but seeing all these programmes and advertisements people have changed their attitudes. People have changed the way they dress, their hairstyles and attitudes.’ One way that these changes are occurring is by mixing Indian and western style of clothing.

  • Anupama Prasad
Journal of Studies in History& Culture JSHC / Paper / F-W 2016 Clothing and Fashion: Presenting the Indian Female Body in Early 20th Century by Anupama Prasad Abstract Exploring the clothing practices of Indian women in the first half of the twentieth century, this article analyses the sartorial transformation and gradual introduction of fashion in the context of Indian dressing largely through the fashion columns which appeared in the newspapers and magazines. The article maps how the discourse on clothing in India was framed within the language of nationalism but gradually more individualized notions such as taste, individuality, personality came to be associated with clothing. It shows that Indian women experimented with their clothing as much as men by incorporating styles from the west as well as reforming Indian styles to dress themselves. However, the modernity embedded within the new dressing style and life style of the elite and middle class Indian women was affected by themes such as tradition and modesty. Keywords Clothing, Fashion, Sartorial Reform, Dressing JSHC | Issue 2 | Vol. 2 | Fall Winter 2016 Journal of Studies in History& Culture Introduction Most studies on the history of fashion suggest that it hardly existed in earlier times, and this has led to a debate about its origin and development. Gilles Lipovetsky points out that fashion (as we understand it today) emerged in the west in the latter half of the nineteenth century.1 On the other hand, Elizabeth Wilson traces the emergence of fashion to the fourteenth century which marked the proliferation of more elaborate styles of men and women’s clothing.2 In order to trace a longer history of fashion and dress in the colonial India, I focus on crucial tipping points in women’s clothing from about the nineteenth century.

  • Clothing: a Social History India and the Contemporary World Tight Dressesandcorsetscaused Deformitiesandillnessamongyoung Campaigning Fordressreform
IIIIII IIIIII Clothing:Clothing:Clothing: III A Social History Chapter V It is easy to forget that there is a history to the clothes we wear. All societies observe certain rules, some of them quite strict, about the way in which men, women and children should dress, or how different social classes and groups should present themselves. These norms come to define the identity of people, the way they see themselves, the way they want others to see them. They shape our notions of grace and beauty, ideas of modesty and shame. As times change and societies are transformed, these notions also alter. Modifications in clothing come to reflect these changes. The emergence of the modern world is marked by dramatic changes in clothing. In this chapter, we will look at some of the histories of clothing in the modern period, that is in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Why are these two centuries important? Before the age of democratic revolutions and the development of capitalist markets in eighteenth-century Europe, most people dressed according to their regional codes, and were limited by the types of clothes and the cost of materials that were available in their region. Clothing styles were also strictly regulated by class, gender or status in the social hierarchy. story After the eighteenth century, the colonisation of most of the world by Europe, the spread of democratic ideals and the growth of an industrial society, completely changed the ways in which people thought about dress and its meanings. People could use styles and materials that were drawn from other cultures and locations, and western dress styles for men were adopted worldwide.

Geographically, India is a vast country so much so that even one of its states is bigger than many countries of Europe. Amidst the diversity, we do have a cultural unity in India in as much as our philosophy of life, our customs, creeds and traditions are basically, more or less, the same.
