REBRANDING “MADE IN INDIA” THROUGH CULTURAL SUSTAINABILITY – EXPLORING AND EXPANDING INDIAN PERSPECTIVES Thesis for Two year Master, 30 ECTS Textile Management Monica Boța-Moisin Raphael Schreiber Thesis Number: 2021.7.01 Title: Rebranding “Made in India” through Cultural Sustainability - Exploring and Expanding Indian Perspectives Year of publication: 2021 Authors: Monica Boța-Moisin and Raphael Schreiber Supervisor: Hanna Wittrock Abstract This exploratory study is a first attempt to translate the Indian cultural context from a socio- cultural, and legal perspective by identifying the values attributed to Indian textile craftsmanship by Indian textile and fashion stakeholders, and how their perspective is influenced by the global recognition and perception of Indian textile crafts and connotation of “Made in India”. At the same time the study investigates the meaning of “sustainability” in the Indian cultural context, in relation to textile craftsmanship, and how this relates to the Western concept of “sustainability”. Through field research in conjunction with a series of in- depth unstructured interviews, this study reveals that Cultural Sustainability is the dominating narrative in the Indian cultural context due to the prevalence of culturally embedded sustainability practices and the role of textile craftsmanship in sustaining livelihood, being a unique exercise of positioning Indian textile craftsmanship within a framework of cultural heritage as a valuable source of knowledge for sustainable practices in the fashion and textile industry. Unique about this study are the India-centric approach combined with the ethnicity of the subjects interviewed - who are, without exception, Indian nationals, whose work, voice and reputation are shaping India's contemporary textile craft-sustainability narrative (being referred to as the “Indian textiles and fashion elite”) and the framing of traditional craftsmanship from a legal perspective, introducing the notion of legal protection of traditional textile knowledge and traditional cultural expressions. -

Each region of India is having a very unique traditional costumes and accessories. Therefore, every region has a different view of fashion which makes its fashion as diverse as the culture and traditions of the country. The fashion in India is not only confined within the limits of the country but a perfect touch of western culture can also be witnessed in the developed and some underdeveloped cities of the country; and all this has been done by Indian Film Industry-“Bollywood” only. To study the heredity influence the questioner was prepared and filled by artisans. The design orientation program was conducted to make artisans aware of latest fashion trends and global market. At the end feedback was taken from the artisans regarding the orientation program. The study proves that this will be a strong step in the direction of traditional textile of Madhya Pradesh and will give the exposure of global market. -
Influence of Television Commercials on Clothing in India
Influence of television commercials on clothing in India Barbara Mitra In this article I aim to show that there are some major changes in India because of television regarding clothing. Whilst there is cultural fusion of Indian and western style clothing, this fusion is happening in different ways for different groups. Status in clothing (Campbell 49) is also reflecting other divides. The way that people respond to what they see on television commercials may depend on their gender, age, class or whether they live in a rural or urban context. The research is based on a ten year project which began with in-depth ethnography conducted in India. Most of the research was conducted in the North East of India, though some was conducted in Delhi, Bombay and Bangalore. The ethnography included living with Indian families for long periods of time (ranging from six weeks to six months). Other research methods were also used including questionnaires, interviews and focus discussion groups. Television commercials are having an influence in India and this is clearly seen and noted by those living amongst the changes. Clothing is one visual representation of this. For example, Chake from Malthi village noted that fashion had changed in his village, along with people’s attitudes and he believed that this was mainly due to the influence of television commercials. ‘Television commercials have a great influence on rural culture. Earlier people used to live in a different manner but seeing all these programmes and advertisements people have changed their attitudes. People have changed the way they dress, their hairstyles and attitudes.’ One way that these changes are occurring is by mixing Indian and western style of clothing. -

As you know India is a diverse country and has 29 states and 7 union territories. Every state has their own diverse language and traditional attire. We even have diversity in religion maximum people following Hinduism and the rest being Islam, Christianity and Sikhism; leave aside the other tribes which have their own traditional attire. Living in such a diversified country it is difficult to write about the entire traditional clothing, but here I will just try giving you a glimpse of the same. For men, traditional clothes are the Achkan/Sherwani, Bandhgala, Lungi, Kurta, Angarkha, Jama and Dhoti or Pajama. Additionally, recently pants and shirts have been accepted as traditional Indian dress by the Government of India. In India, women's clothing varies widely and is closely associated with the local culture, religion and climate. Traditional Indian clothing for women in the north and east are saris worn with choli tops; a long skirt called a lehenga or pavada worn with choli and a dupatta scarf to create an ensemble called a gagra choli; or salwar kameez suits, while many south Indian women traditionally wear sari and children wear pattu langa. Saris made out of silk are considered the most elegant. Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, is one of India's fashion capitals. In many rural parts of India, traditional clothes is worn. -

With a population of over 1.3 billion people, in 29 states and 7 union territories, India is the most populous democracy in the world. Every state has unique traditional clothes that women wear. However there are three prominent types of clothes worn by women in India i.e. Sari, Salwar Kameez and Kurti. Over time, the sense of dressing has evolved and changed. Due to factors like globalisation and westernisation, today’s women take a modern approach when it comes to dress. The paper focused on female librarians’ clothing in India. The survey was conducted by inviting women librarians in every state to give their opinions about today’s clothing styles and their preferences of clothes for daily use and for special occasions such as conferences/ workshops/meetings, etc. The study also explored piercing and tattooing styles and their preferences, and use of jewellery by women library professionals. It was found that Salwar Kameez, Chudidar/Kurta and Saree were most preferred on weekdays, similar outfits were preferred on weekends or Saturdays including Kurti with jeans. Almost all feel comfortable and confident in the outfits they commonly wear.
