This speech was not only of great importance because of its contents and coverage, but also because it was based on precise data and historic scientific evidence. In his speech Dr. Nebez covered various subjects, e.g. pre- Christian ancient history and the mythology of the Kurds, the cultural height and depth of the Kurdish people in the shadow of the numerous expeditions by alien peoples through Kurdistan, the astounding variety of religions in Kurdistan, with special stress on syncretism as the most striking feature of the Kurdish religious culture, delineating syncretism as inherently different from mixed religions. It was really an interesting statement to me; it made me think of two things, the first one is the intention behind this statement, while the second was the attitude of Kurds, especially Kurd musicians, towards researchers and researching. As for the first thing, I felt that there was a problem, maybe a social or psychological, of the Kurdish people in general, and the musicians in particular.

This centre is specified in collecting, maintaining and republishing old Kurdish newspapers and magazines, Kurdish documents and foreign documents that are particular about the Kurdish nation and their homeland. The centre looks after manuscripts and books written by Kurdish authors in the past time. It also works hard to recollect scattered products of famous Kurdish writers, the memories of foreign experts and the references that take on the Kurdish history, demography and culture. The centre also pays similar attention to the documents that concern the neighbouring countries because of the common history and mutual interests. Besides, the centre has established a library and an index system of its huge collection to facilitate the works of the scholars and researchers. The centre occupies a four storey building of over one thousand square meters. By the end of the 2011, 142 books of which forty of them are in Arabic, four in Persian and the rest is in Kurdish. Three issues of Zheen magazine have also been published, beside the Kurdish language Arabic and Persian has used. It has also three centres for manuscripts, documents and antiquities. A special hall is specified for old photography for celebrities. A great number of documents, photos, manuscripts, magazines, newspapers and books have collected and digitalized.

E-mail: [email protected] Finally Kurdish has made it to the pages of the International Journal of the Sociol- ogy of Language.1 This is an event in the history of Kurdish language studies. There is no article about the language in thirty-six years of publishing since 1974.2 And IJSL is not alone in its omission of Kurdish. In fact, this is the first time in the West that a whole issue of a linguistics journal is devoted to its study. If we move from journals to books, the picture does not change. Kurdish is visibly missing in the growing literature on the sociology of language and socio- linguistics even though in recent years research on the politics of the language (e.g., Hassanpour 2000; Olson 2009), its linguicide in Turkey (e.g., Hassanpour 1993; Skutnabb-Kangas and Fernandez 2008), Iran and Syria (Hassanpour, Skutnabb-Kangas and Chyet 1996), its struggles over standardization and official- ization (e.g., Hassanpour 1992), its use in the media (e.g., Sheyholislami 2010), its general description (e.g., Kreyenbroek 1992) or its gendered lexical heritage (e.g., Hassanpour 2005) has been published in books, dissertations and disparate jour- nal articles. In a “sociology of language” approach to the study of Kurdish, we may address questions about the precarious life of this language which many phi- lologists and linguists have ignored, quite often deliberately (Hassanpour 2000).

Being an essential medium of oral narration and literature, Kurdish lyrics have had a unique attribute in becoming a vital resource for different types of studies, including Digital Humanities, Computational Folkloristics and Computational Linguistics. As an initial study of its kind for the Kurdish language, this paper presents our efforts in transcribing and collecting Kurdish folk lyrics as a corpus that covers various Kurdish musical genres, in particular Beyt, Goranˆı, Bend, and Heyran. We believe that this corpus contributes to Kurdish language processing in several ways, such as compensation for the lack of a long history of written text by incorporating oral literature, presenting an unexplored realm in Kurdish language processing, and assisting the initiation of Kurdish computational folkloristics. Our corpus contains 49,582 tokens in the Sorani dialect of Kurdish. The corpus is publicly available in the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) format for non-commercial use under the CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license at https://github.com/KurdishBLARK/KurdishLyricsCorpus.

    Contributors to this issue Amna M. Badri, BSc, MSc, presently in London, has worked as a researcher in the Women Documentation Center at Ahfad University For Women, Omdurman, Sudan. Maria Eriksson is a PhD candidate in the Department of Sociology, Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden. Her research includes men's violence against women, child custody and contact arrangements and practice of social welfare services. She is also programme co-ordinator of the Nordic Council of Minister's "Gender and violence - a Nordic research programme 2000-2004." Vanessa A. Farr is a graduate of the Women's Studies Programme at York University, Toronto. Her work focuses on women's experiences of violent conflict, including the demobilization, disarmament and reintegration of women combatants after war, the impact on women of prolific small arms and light weapons, and women's coalition-building in conflict-torn societies. Amir Hassanpour is Assistant Professor, Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations, University of Toronto. He has a PhD in communications and specializes in international communication, Canadian communication and culture, broadcasting policy, communication theory, and Kurdish media culture. He has taught communication and media studies at the University of Windsor and Concordia University, Canada. He is the author of Nationalism and Language in Kurdistan, 1918-1985 (San Francisco: Mellen Research University Press, 1992). He has made numerous contributions to academic journals, the Encyclopedia of Television, and Encyclopaedia Iranica. Govind Kelkar is co-author of Gender and Tribe (1991), and co-editor of Patriarchy At Odds: Gender Relations in Forest Societies in Asia (forthcoming). She has taught Gender and Development Studies at the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, and is the founding editor of the journal, Gender, Technology and Development.

    UK armed forces Deaths: Operational deaths post World War II 3 September 1945 to 28 February 2021 Published 25 March 2021 This Official Statistic provides summary information on the number of in-service deaths among UK armed forces personnel which occurred as a result of a British, United Nations (UN) or North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) medal earning operation since World War II. This report is updated annually at the end of March and six weeks after the end of each medal earning operation. Key points and trends Since the end of World War II, 7,190 UK armed forces personnel have died as a result of operations in medal earning theatres. There have been no operational deaths since the previous publication. The largest number of deaths among UK armed forces personnel in one operation was the loss of 1,442 lives in Malaya. NATO or United Nations led operations in Cyprus, the Balkans, Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria are ongoing. As at 28 February 2021: - Four UK armed forces personnel have died as a result of operations in Cyprus (UNFICYP). - 72 UK armed forces personnel have died as a result of operations in the Balkans. - 457 UK armed forces personnel have died as a result of operations in Afghanistan. - Four UK armed forces personnel have died as a result of Operation SHADER. Three deaths occurred in Iraq and one in Cyprus.
