BEHIND THE SCENES Anne Frank and her family, along with four others, spent 25 months during World War II in an annex of rooms above her father’s office. After being betrayed to the Nazis, all were arrested and deported to concentration camps. In March of 1945, nine months after she was arrested, Anne Frank died of typhus at Bergen-Belsen. She was 15 years old.

Her diary, saved during the war by a family member’s aid, DIRECTOR was first published in 1947. Its popularity inspired the 1955 Marcia Kash play The Diary of Anne Frank, by the screenwriters Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett. Today, her diary has been translated into 67 languages and is one of the most widely- read books in the world.

SHE IS ALSO A THREE-TIME DORA AWARD WINNER FOR HER WORK ON STAGE.

BEHIND THE SCENES The play’s title is a take on I, Claudius - the memoir of an elderly statesman, meant to be read after his death. The connection lies in the fact that they are both secret accounts of the inner workings of a character and that, in both cases, the events they present for our scrutiny are not necessarily what we would see from any other point of view. The masks used in the play were designed to be used by actors in training programs to develop non-psychological approaches DIRECTOR to characterization and improvisation. “When it came time to Leah Cherniak write the show, I improvised with the masks and transcribed my improvisations,” Thomson says. “Then I read my transcriptions until a story emerged.”

Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple tells the story of Felix Ungar, a neurotic, neat-freak newswriter, who is thrown out by his wife and moves in “I know him. BEHIND THE SCENES As a play, The Odd Couple ran on Broadway from 1965 to 1967. It was directed by Mike Nichols and starred Art Carney as Felix and Walter Matthau as Oscar. In 1968, the play was made into a successful film starring Walter Matthau as Oscar and Jack Lemmon as Felix. The television series made its debut in 1970 starring Jack Klugman and Tony Randall, who became more closely linked with their characters than their movie counterparts. DIRECTOR Diana Leblanc

BEHIND THE SCENES The libretto of Chelm was written by Abraham Shulman, a Jewish journalist from New York who had kept his script in a drawer for two years before showing it to Dora Wasserman. In creating the music for the play, Rubinstein said, “You must make people laugh, dance, cry – all the pleasures and passions must be there. What I really wanted to do is combine the best tradition of Jewish theatre with my musical ideas.”

When the conflagration had been put out, the rabbi mounted a table and addressed the citizens: “My friends, this fire was a miracle sent from heaven above. If it were not for the bright flames, how would we have been able to see how to put the fire out on such a dark night?”

ROD BEATTIE – Actor, The Odd Couple A veteran of 15 seasons with The Stratford Festival, Rod Beattie has become one of the most respected and versatile actors in Canadian theatre. His extensive credits include radio, television, film and live performances across Canada. For the past 20 years, Rod’s name has become synonymous with the Wingfield series, for which he won the 1991- 92 Dora Mavor Moore Award (best performance by an actor in a leading role) for his performance in the first three Wingfield plays. LEAH CHERNIAK – Director, I, Claudia Leah Cherniak is the Co-Artistic Director of Theatre Columbus in Toronto. The company has created over 25 new plays, concentrating on collectively created shows that are developed over several years. As a freelance director, Leah has worked for many theatres in Toronto. Most recently she directed an adaptation of John Gabriel Borkman by Ibsen as a co-production with Soulpepper Theatre. Leah is a teacher at The Ryerson Theatre School, The George Brown College Theatre School and The National Theatre School in Montreal. Leah studied theatre at École Jacques Lecoq in Paris.

Selected credits include ’Hamlet’ in Hamlet, ‘Petruchio’ in The Taming of the Shrew, ‘Andrew’ in Sleuth, ‘Jamie’ in Long Day’s Journey into Night and ‘Vladimir’ in Waiting for Godot. He has appeared at The Segal Theatre as ‘Alton Scales’ in The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window and as ‘Saypol’ in The Trial of the Rosenbergs. John won the Dora Mavor Moore award for best performance as an actor as ‘Lee’ in True West.

MARCIA KASH – Director, The Diary of Anne Frank Marcia began her career as an actor at the Royal Court Theatre in London, England and went on to play leading roles in the U.K., Canada and the U.S. She is also an internationally produced playwright with 10 shows to her credit. Favourite directing credits include: Charley’s Aunt, Blithe Spirit, Popcorn, Zadie’s Shoes for the Atlantic Theatre Festival; Rumors, Annie, The Sound of Music, The Price for Neptune Theatre; The Diary of Anne Frank, Humble Boy for the Manitoba Theatre Centre. She is thrilled to be back at The Segal Theatre where she directed Tuesdays with Morrie.

DIANA LEBLANC – Director, The Odd Couple Diana has directed Fallen Angels and Rose at The Leanor and Alvin Segal Theatre. She has spent several seasons at The Stratford Festival, where her directing credits include A Delicate Balance (2007), Ghosts, The Seagull, Sweet Bird of Youth, Death of A Salesman, The Cherry Orchard, Macbeth and, most famously, Long Day’s Journey Into Night.

MILES POTTER – Director, An Enemy of The People Miles Potter has been an actor and director in Canada for over 30 years and his work JEAN MARCHAND, BRIGITTE POGONAT, has included plays for virtually every major theatre in the country.
