Agudath Israel 2005 U.S. Daf Yomi Directory Sivan 5765 Dear Friend: We are pleased to present the fifth edition of the Daf Yomi Directory. The heavy demand for earlier editions demonstrated the interest of travelers to maintain their learning of the Daf Yomi wherever they may find themselves. Daf Yomi was presented by its illustrious founder, Horav Meir Shapiro zt’l, at the first Knessia Gedola (World Congress) of Agudath Israel in 1923, to bring achdus to klal yisroel through the study of a common daf gemora throughout the world. Over the last eighty years, Daf Yomi has grown both in kamus and achus . Thousands participate in this daily Torah study program in far-flung corners of the globe, thus making this project the greatest “Yeshiva Without Walls” in the world. Best wishes for hatzlocho in your limud of Daf Yomi lehagdil Torah ul’hadira . Sincerely, Gedaliah Weinberger Chairman Sivan 5765 Dear Lomed Daf Yomi : We wish to offer our thanks to the maggidei shiur and a skonim of the daf yomi for their cooperation in providing us with their updated shiur data. In the several months since the 11th Siyum Hashas, we have been zocheh to register over three hundred newly formed groups. Each shiur lists in column order, the shiur location, time given and the name and telephone number of the maggid shiur / contact person for the shiur as well as the language in which the shiur is given (E =English, H = Hebrew, Y = Yiddish). This edition lists all registered shirium in the United States and Canada. If you plan to travel abroad and need daf yomi shiur information for other countries please contact us. Although much effort has been expended for accuracy, (all information received through Nisan 5765 is included), undoubtedly, shiurim exist that are not yet listed. Please forward any additions, and/or corrections to the Daf Yomi Commission – Agudath Israel of America, 42 Broadway (14th Floor), New York, NY 10004, 212.797.9000 ext. 267, fax 646.254.1630 or e-mail to [email protected] . We welcome your comments or suggestions. • Mattos Chassidus on the Massei ~ Mattos Chassidus on the Parsha +
LIGHTS OF OUR RIGHTEOUS TZADDIKIM בעזרת ה ' יתבר A Tzaddik, or righteous person , makes everyone else appear righteous before Hashem by advocating for them and finding their merits. Kedushas Levi, Parshas Noach (Bereishis 7:1) MATTOS ~ MASSEI _ CHASSIDUS ON THE PARSHA + Dvar Torah – Mattos Keep Your Word The Torah states (30:3), “If a man takes a vow or swears an oath to G -d to establish a prohibition upon himself, he shall not violate his word; he shall fulfill whatever comes out of his mouth.” In relation to this passuk , the Midrash quotes from Tehillim (144:4), “Our days are like a fleeting shadow.” What is the connection? This can be explained, says Rav Levi Yitzchok, according to a Gemara ( Nedarim 10b), which states, “It is forbidden to say, ‘ Lashem korban , for G-d − an offering.’ Instead a person must say, ‘ Korban Lashem , an offering for G -d.’ Why? Because he may die before he says the word korban , and then he will have said the holy Name in vain.” In this light, we can understand the Midrash. The Torah states that a person makes “a vow to G-d.” This i s the exact language that must be used, mentioning the vow first. Why? Because “our days are like a fleeting shadow,” and there is always the possibility that he may die before he finishes his vow and he will have uttered the Name in vain. n Story The wood chopper had come to Ryczywohl from the nearby village in which he lived, hoping to find some kind of employment.

  • PASSOVER April, 1991
\ ins min LINCOLN SQUARE SYNAGOGUE BULLETIN Nisan 5751 - Volume 26, No. 5 PASSOVER April, 1991 A GUIDE TO THE LAWS OF PESACH I. ABOUT CHAMETZ A. The Prohibition The prohibition against Chametz on Pesach is found in the Torah. It commands every Jew: a. not to eat or drink it, b. not to own it, c. not to possess it. The prohibition applies to even the slightest amount of such Chametz because of the harshness of the penalty prescribed by the Torah — excision, or because of the fact that Chametz is permissible after Pesach — there can be no nullification during Pesach. The Rabbinic prohibition extends to the use even after Pesach of Chametz which belonged to a Jew during Pesach. For this reason, Jewish bakeries and other food stores which do not sell their Chametz before Pesach should not be patronized for approximately a month after the holiday so that no Chametz product which belonged to them during Pesach would be consumed even afterwards. However, this prohibition applies only to products which are in the category of Chametz B'ein (see below). B. The Forms of Chametz 1. Chametz B'ein — Pure Chametz — The combination of any of the five grains mentioned in the Torah (wheat, barley, rye, oats and spelt), or any of their derivatives (such as flour) with water or moisture for a period of eighteen minutes during which the mixture is not stirred, results in Chametz. (This process, described in the Talmud in terms of its appearance, is not identical with the process of fermentation. Chametz appears to be an arbitrarily defined state, not a scientifically definable condition.) Thus, included in this category are bread, cakes and pastries, beer, grain alcohol, and even matzah which was not specially prepared for Passover use.

  • THE THEOLOGICAL LETTERS of RABBI TALMUD of LUBLIN (SUMMER–FALL 1942) Gershon Greenberg
THE THEOLOGICAL LETTERS OF RABBI TALMUD OF LUBLIN (SUMMER–FALL 1942) Gershon Greenberg Carbon copies of two typewritten Hebrew letters by Rabbi Hirsh Melekh Talmud (Tsevi Elimelekh Talmud, born 1912, Glogów Małoposki) survived the Majdan- Tatarski ghetto and are held by the State Archives in Lublin. The letters offer rare access to the existential turmoil of the Jewish religious mind within the ultra-Orthodox world at the very center of the Holocaust.1 When the Germans invaded Poland on September 1, 1939, Talmud―a graduate of the Hakhmei Lublin Yeshiva founded in 1924 by Meir Shapiro―was one of five functioning city rabbis of Lublin (the others were Yosef Mendel Preshisukha, Leizer Ezra Kirschenbaum, Avraham Yosef Schlingenbaum, and Yisrael Hirsch Finkelmann) and served in the civil office for marriage and burials. After the Lublin ghetto was opened in March 1941, he served on the Jewish Council (Judenrat). He was the only city rabbi to survive the March–April 1942 deportations, when most of the ghetto’s 30,000 Jews were taken to Bełżec, and was among the some 5,000 moved to the Majdan-Tatarski ghetto (established on April 19, 1942) that was situated between the Lublin ghetto and a Majdanek subcamp. He continued to serve on the Judenrat (at least through August 1942) and as a religious judge (Dayan) with responsibility for birth certificates and officiating at marriages; he also officiated at the divorce of the notorious Shammai Greier, before Greier went on to marry a seventeen-year-old girl in a raucous ceremony in the midst of the ongoing mourning.
