SELECTED NOVELS (Choose ONE):

Purple Hibiscus, Chimamanda Adichie All the Light We Cannot See, Anthony Doerr Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Jonathan Safar Foer The Nightingale, Kristin Hannah , Cormac McCarthy Where the Crawdads Sing, Delia Owens

REQUIRED READING FOR ALL AP ENGLISH IV STUDENTS:

How to Read Literature Like a Professor, Thomas C. Foster (Either edition is acceptable, though the included chapter list refers to the revised edition)

RECOMMENDATION: Read your novel FIRST, then work through How to Read Literature Like a Professor while creating your chart.

Each student is encouraged to research and select a novel with care, as this novel will be utilized heavily throughout the frst quarter.

ASSIGNMENT: How to Read Literature Like a Professor presents various motifs and patterns presented in literature. Using the following chapters from this text (some are combined), create a chart comparing the motif or pattern presented with a specifc example from your novel selection. You should have a 3-5 sentence response for each item on the list below, explaining how the chapter is relevant to a specifc scene, character, or aspect of your novel. You MUST incorporate quotations for support from your novel (NOT from How to Read Literature…).

You only need a response for TEN of the following numerical entries; it is not necessary to create three different responses for each of the three chapters on allusions. You also do not need an entry for “Now, Where Have I Seen Her Before?”, “Interludes”, “Don’t Read With Your Eyes”, or “A Test Case”. We will address those chapters in discussion the frst week of school. Again, you are to select TEN of the following chapters from this list to create your chart.
