Adult carabid beetles are generally mobile and their life span is rather long, so probably they respond to quite different biotic and abiotic cues at different times of the season (LANGMAACK et al. 2001). The distribution and activity of carabid beetles in different cropping systems have been studied extensively. Investigations usually show higher number of species and/or individuals in diversified cropping systems, compared to monocultures (RYAN et al. 1980; WIECH & WNUK 1991; ARMSTRONG & MCKINLAY 1994; BOOIJ et al. 1997). The fauna of Iranian Carabidae was studied rather well and some researches were made by JAEGER (1990), JAEGER (1992), HEJKAL (2000), LASSALLE (2001), ALICHI & MINAEI (2002a, b), HEINZ (2002), MAGRINI & PAVESI (2003), JASKULA (2007), TOLEDANO & MARGGI (2007), GHAHARI et al. (2009a, b, c, 2010). The objective of this paper is determining of carabids fauna in Khorasan province, Eastern Iran. Materials and Methods The carabid specimens were collected from fourteen different regions of Khorasan province, Eastern Iran. The sampled regions of this research were Birjand, Bojnourd, Esfarayen, Fariman, Kashmar, Khalil Abad, Mashhad, Nehbandan, Neyshabour, Quchan, Sabzevar, Sarakhs, Sarbisheh, Shirvan and Torbat-e-Heydariyeh. Plastic pitfall traps, 10×15 cm (diameter × depth) and light traps were the main methods for collecting the specimens. The pitfall traps installed at 50 m intervals in different apple orchards and were part-filled with ethanol 80%. The traps were emptied weekly for three crop seasons (spring – fall) and the fallen beetles were collected. In addition to the pit fall and light traps, sweeping nets were conducted randomly in different ecosystems of the mentioned provinces. The information concerning specific name, describer and description date, locality and date of collection, and number of species (in brackets) was given. The nomenclature of the Carabidae is given sensu LÖBL & SMETANA (2003). Results In a total 41 carabid species and subspecies from 23 genera and 10 subfamilies were collected from different regions of Khorasan province. The list of species is given below. University of Tlemcen, BP119 13000 Algeria 2IMBE, CNRS, IRD, Aix-Marseille University, France *Corresponding author: [email protected] ABSTRACT A study on diversity of ground beetle communities (Coleoptera Carabidae) was conducted between March 2011 and February 2012 in the temporary pond: Dayet El Ferd (listed as a Ramsar site in 2004) located in a steppe area on the northwest of Algeria. The samples were collected bimonthly at 6 sampling plots and the gathered Carabidae were identified and coun - ted. A total of 55 species belonging to 32 genera of 7 subfamilies were identified from 2893 collected ground beetles. The most species rich subfamilies were Harpalinae (35 species, 64%) and Trechinae (14 species, 25.45%), others represented by one or two species. Accord- ing to the total individual numbers, Cicindelinae was the most abundant subfamily compris- ing 38.81% of the whole beetles, followed by 998 Harpalinae (34.49%), and 735 Trechinae (25.4%), respectively. The dominant species was Calomera lunulata (Fabricius, 1781) (1087 individuals, 37.57%) and the subdominant species was Pogonus chalceus viridanus (Dejean, 1828) (576 individuals, 19.91%). Among the insects inhabiting endorheic, temporary and highly saline small lakes of central Spain during dry periods, tiger beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Cicindelinae) form particularly rich assemblages including unique endemic species. Cephalota dulcinea López, De la Rosa & Baena, 2006 is an endemic, regionally protected species that occurs only in saline marshes in Castilla-La Mancha (Central Spain). Here, we report that C. dulcinea suffers potential risks associated with counter-attacks by ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), while using them as prey at one of these marshes. Through mark–recapture methods, we estimated the population size of C. dulcinea at the study marsh as of 1352 individuals, with a sex ratio slightly biased towards males. Evident signs of ant defensive attack by the seed-harvesting ant Messor barbarus (Forel, 1905) were detected in 14% of marked individuals, sometimes with cut ant heads still grasped with their mandibles to the beetle body parts. Ant injuries have been more frequently recorded at the end of adult C.

Material was pitfall trapped in 2010 and 2011 on twelve sites of the agricultural landscape in the Prešov town and its near vicinity, Eastern Slovakia. A total of 14,763 ground beetle individuals were entrapped. Material collection resulted into 92 Carabidae species, with the following six species dominating: Poecilus cupreus, Pterostichus melanarius, Pseudoophonus rufipes, Brachinus crepitans, Anchomenus dorsalis and Poecilus versicolor. Studied habitats differed significantly in the number of entrapped individuals, activity abundance as well as representation of the carabids according to their habitat preferences and ability to fly. However, no significant distinction was observed in the diversity, evenness neither dominance.

SCHMIDT Abstract Two new species of Ground Beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Platynini) are described: Anchomenus bellus sp.n. from southern and eastern Turkey, and A. alcedo sp.n. from northern Israel and Lebanon. In external characters they are very similar to the western Turkey endemic A. dohrnii FAIRMAIRE, 1866, but differ distinctly each in male genitalic characters. A third new species of Anchomenus BONELLI is described from eastern Afghanistan: A. kataevi sp.n. The relationships of the new species are briefly discussed, and a key to the Palaearctic representatives of the genus Anchomenus is pro- vided. Anchomenus dorsalis infuscatus CHEVROLAT, 1854, formerly considered a junior synonym of A. dorsalis PONTOPPIDAN, 1763, is here regarded as a good subspecies. • From Characters of the Female Reproductive Tract
Phylogeny and Classification of Caraboidea Mus. reg. Sci. nat. Torino, 1998: XX LCE. (1996, Firenze, Italy) 107-170 James K. LIEBHERR and Kipling W. WILL* Inferring phylogenetic relationships within Carabidae (Insecta, Coleoptera) from characters of the female reproductive tract ABSTRACT Characters of the female reproductive tract, ovipositor, and abdomen are analyzed using cladi stic parsimony for a comprehensive representation of carabid beetle tribes. The resulting cladogram is rooted at the family Trachypachidae. No characters of the female reproductive tract define the Carabidae as monophyletic. The Carabidac exhibit a fundamental dichotomy, with the isochaete tri bes Metriini and Paussini forming the adelphotaxon to the Anisochaeta, which includes Gehringiini and Rhysodini, along with the other groups considered member taxa in Jeannel's classification. Monophyly of Isochaeta is supported by the groundplan presence of a securiform helminthoid scle rite at the spermathecal base, and a rod-like, elongate laterotergite IX leading to the explosion cham ber of the pygidial defense glands. Monophyly of the Anisochaeta is supported by the derived divi sion of gonocoxa IX into a basal and apical portion. Within Anisochaeta, the evolution of a secon dary spermatheca-2, and loss ofthe primary spermathcca-I has occurred in one lineage including the Gehringiini, Notiokasiini, Elaphrini, Nebriini, Opisthiini, Notiophilini, and Omophronini. This evo lutionary replacement is demonstrated by the possession of both spermatheca-like structures in Gehringia olympica Darlington and Omophron variegatum (Olivier). The adelphotaxon to this sper matheca-2 clade comprises a basal rhysodine grade consisting of Clivinini, Promecognathini, Amarotypini, Apotomini, Melaenini, Cymbionotini, and Rhysodini. The Rhysodini and Clivinini both exhibit a highly modified laterotergite IX; long and thin, with or without a clavate lateral region.
