This is the fourteenth Network Statement prepared in Finland, in accordance with the Finnish Railway Act. The Network Statement describes the access conditions, the state- owned railway network, the rail capacity allocation process, the services supplied to Railway Undertakings and the principles of determining the infrastructure charge. The Network Statement is published for applicants for capacity for each timetable period separately. The present Network Statement is intended for the timetable period 11.12.2016-9.12.2017. The Network Statement 2017 has been prepared based on the previous Network Statement taking into account the feedback received from users and the Network Statements of other European Infrastructure Managers. The structure of the Network Statement follows the common European structure and comprises the following chapters: 1 General 2 Access conditions 3 Railway network 4 Capacity allocation 5 Services supplied to Railway Undertakings 6 Infrastructure charge The amendment to the Railway Act entered into force on 8 December 2015, and the decrees to be issued under the Act are being prepared at the time of publication. The amendments resulting from the revised statutes will be made in the Network Statement at the beginning of 2016. Within the Finnish Transport Agency, the Network Statement is the responsibility of the Traffic Services Department. Several specialists inside and outside the Finnish Transport Agency have been involved in the preparation of the Network Statement.

  • The Finnish Archipelago Coast from AD 500 to 1550 – a Zone of Interaction
The Finnish Archipelago Coast from AD 500 to 1550 – a Zone of Interaction Tapani Tuovinen [email protected], [email protected] Abstract New archaeological, historical, paleoecological and onomastic evidence indicates Iron Age settle- ment on the archipelago coast of Uusimaa, a region which traditionally has been perceived as deso- lated during the Iron Age. This view, which has pertained to large parts of the archipelago coast, can be traced back to the early period of field archaeology, when an initial conception of the archipelago as an unsettled and insignificant territory took form. Over time, the idea has been rendered possible by the unbalance between the archaeological evidence and the written sources, the predominant trend of archaeology towards the mainland (the terrestrical paradigm), and the history culture of wilderness. Wilderness was an important platform for the nationalistic constructions of early Finnishness. The thesis about the Iron Age archipelago as an untouched no-man’s land was a history politically convenient tacit agreement between the Finnish- and the Swedish-minded scholars. It can be seen as a part of the post-war demand for a common view of history. A geographical model of the present-day archaeological, historical and palaeoecological evi- dence of the archipelago coast is suggested. Keywords: Finland, Iron Age, Middle Ages, archipelago, settlement studies, nationalism, history, culture, wilderness, borderlands. 1. The coastal Uusimaa revisited er the country had inhabitants at all during the Bronze Age (Aspelin 1875: 58). This drastic The early Finnish settlement archaeologists of- interpretation developed into a long-term re- ten treated the question of whether the country search tradition that contains the idea of easily was settled at all during the prehistory: were perishable human communities and abandoned people in some sense active there, or was the regions.

Partial translation from the book: Air Force Participation in the Finnish War of Independence in Year 1918 by Aarne Bremer, 1934 Translated by Seppo Koivisto, 2.2.1999; updated 18.5.1999, 15.5.2004 Chapter II. German Air Activity in Finland 1918 (pages 170-202) Initial Phase of Getting Aid (page 170) The greatest aid, that Finland received already in the preparatory stages and then during the war, came from Germany. Already in autumn 1917 arms shipments came from there to arm the home defence. During the Independence War large amounts of arms and ammunition were further bought from Germany. In February 1918 Germany agreed to send the Königlicher Preussischer Jägerbataillon Nr. 27 (of Finnish volunteers) to Finland. When the red danger was continuously worsening in Southern Finland, made Councillor of State Hjelt, a Finn that had greatest influence in Germany, his best to get aid to Finland. (Edvard Hjelt, 1855-1921, was an active and sometimes arbitrary representative of the Finnish Senate in Germany. He for instance issued a Finnish passport in false name to General Ludendorf after his resignation.) On February 11th the peace negotiations between Germany and Russia at Brest-Litovski were interrupted. By threatening St. Petersburg from Finland, Germany would force Russia swiftly for final conclusion of peace. For this Germany would not need large forces, just so much that the white Finland would win. German high command asked councillor of state Hjelt to send an urgent request for armed assistance. Councillor of State Hjelt saw, that he could fulfil this request, as he had received a telegram from Councillor of State A.
