The Displaced Bard Lotte Tarkka University of Helsinki Abstract Riiko Kallio (1869–1942), from the Archangel Karelian village of Pirttilahti, left a faint but many-sided impression in the margins of Finnish history. Through various personae—namely, legendary sage, last male singer of epic poetry, model and hired hand to painter Akseli Gallen-Kallela, refugee, guerilla, spy, and political kulak—he played a minor role in shaping cultural history. Unraveling the story of a man with many names is an exercise in microhistory, an analysis of the symbolic exchange taking place between popular culture and the culture of the national elite. As the ideological struggle over the heritage of the Kalevala and the kalevalaic culminated in the fight for Karelian autonomy, Kallio served as a mediator and a liminal figure both on the battlefield and in folklore collections. The story of building Finnish national identity corpus for my research on kalevala-meter poetry through the Kalevala has been repeatedly told, in Vuokkiniemi parish (Tarkka, 2005)1, I came varied upon, and contested. The awakening of a national sense of identity and aspirations for independence were supported by Finnish right-wing military expeditions determined to “liberate” Archangel. These expeditions were aiming at creating a “Greater Finland” that would unite all Finno- Ugric “tribal brothers.” Some Karelians worked for Karelian autonomy as a part of Finland; many joined the Karelian Regiment of Murmansk seeking to prevent Finnish and German intervention. These forces clashed with the Bolshevik power that had gradually reached the Russian periphery. When the regiment armed and led by the Allies dissolved, its supporters and soldiers were split between the Bolsheviks and the pro-independence Karelians.     Oral Tradition, 8/2 (1993): 247-288 From Maria to Marjatta: The Transformation of an Oral Poem in Elias Lönnrot’s Kalevala1 Thomas DuBois The question of Elias Lönnrot’s role in shaping the texts that became his Kalevala has stirred such frequent and vehement debate in international folkloristic circles that even persons with only a passing interest in the subject of Finnish folklore have been drawn to the question. Perhaps the notion of academic fraud in particular intrigues those of us engaged in the profession of scholarship.2 And although anyone who studies Lönnrot’s life and endeavors will discover a man of utmost integrity, it remains difficult to reconcile the extensiveness of Lönnrot’s textual emendations with his stated desire to recover and present the ancient epic traditions of the Finnish people. Imagine it is the gathering of your clan to celebrate harvesting. There’s much to eat and to drink because such gatherings are rare. A special event is the performance of runo‐singers. The clan may have singers among themselves, or a couple of itinerant singers may appear, defying a long walk through deep, dark forests and braving bears, wolves, lynxes, elks. The singers are specially gifted in that they are able to remember and recite a great many runo‐cantos, which they have learned from earlier singers. They would also be the teachers to the following generations to secure this ancient oral tradition. The singers follow the old custom of singing: They sit opposite to each other, grasp each other’s hands, and sway back and forth in the rhythm of the old, monotonous tune. This archaic song tradition was a vital, living tradition throughout Finland until the 1500s. The crusades had brought Christianity to the country about three centuries earlier, but now the Reformation forbade the singing of these pagan songs. (In return, the Church gave people the Bible translated in Finnish.) The song tradition gradually disappeared from the Western part of the country, but was preserved in the East, Karjala or Karelia. In early 1800s, a physician, Elias Lonnrot, began systematically to write down runo‐singers’ songs, and in 1835 published a collection of the songs, called Kalevala.
