Learning Objective: To identify and recall a number of famous pirates. To recount certain details about each of these pirates. TASK 1: Read the information on the different pirates and answer the questions. TASK 2: Watch the video clips on pirates. TASK 3: OPTIONAL EXTENSION ACTIVITY- Research the life of another pirate. Save your work: If you are using a computer, open a blank document to do your work (you can use Word or Publisher). Don’t forget to SAVE it with your name, the lesson you are doing and the date. When reading the information it often helps to underline or highlight- people and place names and any dates or numbers that you see. This will help you to answer the questions later.
PIRATE 1 – BLACK BEARD (real name Edward Teach) 1680-1718 Blackbeard was born around 1680, and his real name was Edward Teach (or Edward Thatch). Many think he was part of a wealthy family because he could read and write well. His pirate career began in 1716 when he joined the crew of Captain Hornigold, an English pirate. When Hornigold stopped being a pirate, he gave Blackbeard his ship. A year later, Blackbeard and his crew attacked a French ship the 'Concorde', and converted it to a pirate ship and the legend 1. PIRATE 3 - ANNE BONNY 1700-? Anne Bonny was born as Anne Cormac in Ireland around 1700. Anne was said to have fiery red hair and a fiery temper to match! There are stories that she attacked a servant girl with a knife when she just 13. When Anne was 16, she married a small-time pirate named James Bonny against her father's wishes. They travelled to a pirate's hideout, and Anne became friends with many pirates. Anne fell in love with a pirate captain called Calico Jack Rackam. Anne joined him and fought alongside him and became good friends with another female pirate called Mary 5. What was Anne Bonny’s name when she was born? Read.

Task 3 – OPTIONAL EXTENSION ACTIVITY. Below are pictures of 2 other very famous pirates. If you would like to do some extra History work go online and research one of these pirates (or any other pirate you are interested in.) When doing a search I would type the pirate’s name, then the date of his birth and I would also add the words ‘for kids’ in the search bar. This will make sure that the sites shown are for young people and are therefore easier to understand.
