The Hollyfield School

HOLLYFIELD SCHOOL FUND

The Hollyfield School is here to provide an outstanding educational experience, complemented by the values that we instil in our students of self-reliance, responsibility and honesty.

In contrast with our aspirations & ambitions for your children, our public sector funding is frozen and our capital allocation funding has been slashed. Providing the best environment for learning and the best life opportunities under these circumstances is ever more challenging.

The Hollyfield School Fund has been established to enable us to advance the education and welfare of all our students. Funds raised are used to provide first rate resources and opportunities for everyone at Hollyfield School.

We have been fortunate over the years to have had a number of benefactors who have shared our vision and have generously helped us towards our goals. For example, they have provided financial support for the excellent annual school drama productions and also helped us improve facilities such as the refurbishment of our science labs. In recent years, Hollyfield School Fund monies have helped us rebuild the student toilet block and to provide a wonderful outside learning environment, The Hollywood Wildlife Garden. We are also looking forward to the internal and external refurbishment of the canteen facilities.

One of the ways in which you can support The Hollyfield School is to provide financial assistance. Your support enables the school to consider projects and equipment to benefit the students that would not ordinarily be affordable within the annual school funding.

The current suggested contribution is £30 per month, per child, or £360 per year.

For the majority of donors (who are UK residents) ticking the gift aid box will enable us to reclaim a further 25 pence per £1 from the tax office. While some families support at a higher level, others prefer to give to the school in other ways, for example, by donating their skills. Whatever donation you feel able to make is greatly appreciated and will be used to benefit all our students.

How you can contribute

• A donation form, with Gift Aid declaration follows.

If you feel able to contribute a small, regular contribution, please complete the forms and return it to the Bursar in the Finance office at school.

GETTING TO KNOW YOUR……… Student Services We are Sally Allen and Zoe Kelly and we work in Student Services. Student Services is the hub of the school with both students and staff requiring our help. We are responsible for providing students with support in all aspects, such as loan of school uniform, locker allocation, lost property, mobile phone confiscation, callouts, lift passes and most importantly first aid to name but a few. We provide staff with support by sending letters home to parents, calling parents, assisting with the callout process, pupil statements, collection of reply slips, CAS day and much much more.

Interesting Fact Zoe was involved in the production of a music track.

Attendance Officer – Deborah Harvey My role is to oversee attendance and punctuality for years 7 – 11 in the school on a daily basis. I have lived in Surbiton for almost twenty years so feel I know the community well. I relax by making jams and chutneys in my spare time.

YEAR GROUP NEWS…………….. Head of Year 8 Miss McDonnell We had a very successful exam day on Wednesday this week. The focus and commitment shown in the exam hall was admirable, and I am sure that there will be some wonderful results in RE and French to celebrate. In other news, Jupiter is still leading the way with the most amount of achievement points in the year group, and Paul Yang has knocked Jay off the top spot with the highest most amount of achievement points in the year group. Well done Paul! I’ve been really impressed with the business ideas that I’ve seen around school too – all students have now been given £1 to start their Gradu8 projects and so far I’ve seen some great ideas. We have already had some fantastic cake sales to raise money for charity, and one student has made some beautiful home sewn Christmas baubles! I can’t wait to see what the rest of the year group do!

SUBJECT NEWS…………….

Computing – Mrs Assam Come to the Year 8 and Year 9 coding club on Wednesday lunchtime in IT1 to learn how to create different projects in Python. We will be looking at how to create 6 different projects across 6 weeks. The projects include drawing with Python Turtle and creating some basic games such as Hangman and Naughts and Crosses. This will help with your Python programming in lessons as well as providing you with some really cool applications to show your friends and family!

Design Technology – Miss Tunstead The Design and Technology Department are working hard to offer an exciting and creative array of projects within the curriculum. Throughout Key Stage 3 we develop student’s skills across Textiles, Food and 3D-Design. Learning to create and make a range of different outcomes at increasingly more complex levels using a variety of materials. We hope at the end of Key Stage 3 students will have enjoyed the projects and identified an area in which they might like to complete a GCSE.

For those students who excel in these more creative subjects, enjoy problem solving and making, these GCSE’s can lead on to successful career paths ranging from Chef to Fashion Designer, Plumbing apprenticeships to Engineering courses. As the Government have recently acknowledged we have a skills gap in the economy that needs to be filled by just such qualifications and the new apprenticeships will be in demand – students can get ahead of the game by adding a GCSE in these practical subjects - a stepping stone to the new ‘T’ Level when they are launched!

As a department, Miss Richardson, Ms Hall, Ms Tunstead and our highly skilled technicians Mr McNeil and Mrs Killeya, we strive to add something exciting and stimulating to the timetable. Activities and skills that will engage students and contribute to the well-rounded and multi-faceted curriculum available to our The Hollyfield Community.

English – Mrs Holden Skim Reading In the constant drive to raise standards and to support and improve the literacy of our students, we ask you to reinforce the skill of Skim Reading to encourage flexible readers. This will help increase reading speed and allow students to gather the information they require quickly, and efficiently without wasting time.

In an examination/ assessment situation the question should always be read first so the student knows what they are skimming the text for; the skill lies in knowing what specific information to look for and to read only what is important to your purpose. This skill is usually used to quickly find the main idea or point of a text and is often done at a speed three or four times faster than a reader’s usual reading speed.

Below are a few quick and simple activities you can try at home. These can be done using any piece of non-fiction from magazine or newspaper articles to extracts from biographies.

Skim an article and summarise in one sentence/ paragraph that includes three/ five/ seven key pieces of information Reduce each paragraph to a relevant word Skim an article and give it a headline Skim the headline/ sub-headings and explain the topic of the article After reading a piece of writing prior to your child ask a quiz-style question they need to answer in a specified time from skimming the same piece of writing you are referring to.

CATERING FAQs

We have put together a list of our FAQs we encounter regarding school meals and the canteen at Hollyfield.

Please let us know if you have any unanswered questions regarding free school meals - email [email protected].

1) How do I know what my son/daughter eats in the school canteen and if he/she is using his/her Free School Meal allowance?

You can check/view what your child eats at the canteen via Parentmail (our internet payment system). Click on the ‘your account’ option and then payments in the top right hand corner, click on the orange icon in the dinner money balance. This will give you a list of when meals were purchased and click on view to see what was bought.

2) What are the criteria for Free School Meals and how do I apply?

Residents of Richmond and Kingston Boroughs can apply online through this link https://www.kingston.gov.uk/info/200130/education_schools_and_nurseries/364/form_apply_for_free_s chool_meals.

3) What is the Free School meal allowance at Hollyfield and what are the restrictions?

Students receive £2.30 on their account every day which can be used before school, at break and lunchtime. This amount does not rollover if it is not spent. However, if a purchase is made before school or at break time then the allowance may not be enough to cover a meal. We encourage you to add £1 per day to top up the free allowance for additional purchases.

4) How do I know what is on offer in the canteen and the prices?

Please see the link to our latest prices/flyers http://www.hollyfield.kingston.sch.uk/hfs2014v3/parents.html

If you have any queries about these points please contact:

IN CASE OF SEVERE WEATHER CONDITIONS

OPENCHECK

Circumstances can arise from time to time when it becomes necessary to close the school due to extreme weather or other unforeseen events. In the event of severe weather we shall do everything we can to remain open but if at any time you wish to check if the school is open, you may do so in the following ways.

Hollyfield uses OpenCheck, a service operated by LGFL to provide up-to-date information to parents or carers, indicating whether a school is open or closed. In order to check our current status, simply browse to the OpenCheck website (http://map.lgfl.org.uk/opencheck), select “Kingston upon Thames” as the borough and “The Hollyfield School and Sixth Form Centre” as the school.

If you are unable to contact the main school switchboard, the status of the school can also be checked by calling 020 8408 7508 and keying in the school’s DCSF code: 3145404

Please also ensure you check the school website for regular updates.

Volunterring Opportunities

Be an active member of your local community by volunteering at Alfriston Day Centre & Outreach Service . We are looking for volunteers to help with all aspects of our Day Centre and Outreach befriending services. This would include:

Lunch service helpers - serving lunch to diners, or assisting our cook in the kitchen with plating up food, clearing/washing up duties. Also serving teas and coffees.

Transport team – Relief minibus drivers and/or escorts – both on our daily transport team or on our various outings throughout the year.

Entertainment volunteers - If you have a certificate to run chair-based exercises or can offer afternoon entertainment we would be delighted to hear from you.

Outreach Volunteer Befrienders - Our Outreach befriending service matches friendly volunteers with older, isolated members of the community who are unable to attend the Day Centre. We offer training and ongoing support to our volunteers in their befriending role.

Alfriston Day Centre has been at the heart of the local community for over 65 years at its address in Berrylands Road, Surbiton. It offers a warm, caring environment for older people in the community where they can enjoy social interaction, home-cooked lunch and afternoon entertainment along with regular outings and hairdressing and chiropody services. We are committed and dedicated to enhancing the lives of older people in our community.

Please call Lisa, Ayesha or Tina to find out more about the roles available and to arrange to come in and meet us.
