HOLLYFIELD SCHOOL FUND

The Hollyfield School is here to provide an outstanding educational experience, complemented by the values that we instil in our students of self-reliance, responsibility and honesty.

In contrast with our aspirations & ambitions for your children, our public sector funding is frozen and our capital allocation funding has been slashed. Providing the best environment for learning and the best life opportunities under these circumstances is ever more challenging.

The Hollyfield School Fund has been established to enable us to advance the education and welfare of all our students. Funds raised are used to provide first rate resources and opportunities for everyone at Hollyfield School.

We have been fortunate over the years to have had a number of benefactors who have shared our vision and have generously helped us towards our goals. For example, they have provided financial support for the excellent annual school drama productions and also helped us improve facilities such as the refurbishment of our science labs. In recent years, Hollyfield School Fund monies have helped us rebuild the student toilet block and to provide a wonderful outside learning environment, The Hollywood Wildlife Garden. We are also looking forward to the internal and external refurbishment of the canteen facilities.

One of the ways in which you can support The Hollyfield School is to provide financial assistance. Your support enables the school to consider projects and equipment to benefit the students that would not ordinarily be affordable within the annual school funding.

The current suggested contribution is £30 per month, per child, or £360 per year.

For the majority of donors (who are UK residents) ticking the gift aid box will enable us to reclaim a further 25 pence per £1 from the tax office. While some families support at a higher level, others prefer to give to the school in other ways, for example, by donating their skills. Whatever donation you feel able to make is greatly appreciated and will be used to benefit all our students.

How you can contribute

• A donation form, with Gift Aid declaration follows.

If you feel able to contribute a small, regular contribution, please complete the forms and return it to the Bursar in the Finance office at school.

SUBJECT NEWS…………….

English – Mrs Holden The Year 11 revision session for the forthcoming PPE in English Language Paper 2 was well attended. Students were given ‘Top Tips’ for the exam and ideas on how to approach each question in turn. The attendance was good and students gave reflective and positive feedback:

“A good guide for every question and a logical order to answer them in.”

“Very informative, helped a lot we should do it more often.”

“Precise and concise info, no waffle.”

However there was a criticism:

“Bad jokes.”

I will endeavour to work on the humorous aspect of my teaching, and I will soon be supplying students with some model answers, as they requested (Mrs Rhodes)

History – Miss Lowery/Mr Buckman Firstly, the History Department is happy to announce that initial preparation has begun for two new educational trips for Year 10 and Year 11 students. We hope to soon be able to offer a Year 10 trip to the battlefields in Normandy to expand our students’ knowledge of Western medicine during the First World War; which is a new element of the GCSE specification. As well as this trip, we hope to organise a Year 11 trip to Berlin which will provide students with an excellent opportunity to see some of the key places, institutions and museum’s that will cover the topics of Nazi Germany and The Cold War.

Since the start in September, Year 7 have enjoyed learning about the development of Crime and Punishment since the Roman Period and are now beginning to look at Medieval – starting with the Battle of Hastings. Year 8 have been exploring the tumultuous Tudor period and have looked into the significance of the Black Death, the Great Fire and the Gunpowder Plot. Year 9 have just begun to study the causes of the First World War and will soon be looking at the conditions of the Trenches, which will fit timely with the centenary of the Battle of Passchendaele. Year 10 are continuing to look at the development of medicine through time and are currently looking at the effect the Industrial Revolution had on advancing the understanding and knowledge of medicine. Finally, Year 11 has explored the key reasons why Hitler became German Chancellor in 1933 and will be soon looking at how the Nazis exercised their control over the German population.

I would encourage all students studying History to take note of some of the Remembrance Sunday events that are taking place both nationally and locally this weekend. This is a perfect opportunity for them to learn a bit more about the First World War.

CATERING FAQs

We have put together a list of our FAQs we encounter regarding school meals and the canteen at Hollyfield.

Please let us know if you have any unanswered questions regarding free school meals - email [email protected].

1) How do I know what my son/daughter eats in the school canteen and if he/she is using his/her Free School Meal allowance?

You can check/view what your child eats at the canteen via Parentmail (our internet payment system). Click on the ‘your account’ option and then payments in the top right hand corner, click on the orange icon in the dinner money balance. This will give you a list of when meals were purchased and click on view to see what was bought.

2) What are the criteria for Free School Meals and how do I apply?

Residents of Richmond and Kingston Boroughs can apply online through this link https://www.kingston.gov.uk/info/200130/education_schools_and_nurseries/364/form_apply_for_free_s chool_meals.

3) What is the Free School meal allowance at Hollyfield and what are the restrictions?

Students receive £2.30 on their account every day which can be used before school, at break and lunchtime. This amount does not rollover if it is not spent. However, if a purchase is made before school or at break time then the allowance may not be enough to cover a meal. We encourage you to add £1 per day to top up the free allowance for additional purchases.

4) How do I know what is on offer in the canteen and the prices?

Please see the link to our latest prices/flyers http://www.hollyfield.kingston.sch.uk/hfs2014v3/parents.html

If you have any queries about these points please contact:

IN CASE OF SEVERE WEATHER CONDITIONS

OPENCHECK

Circumstances can arise from time to time when it becomes necessary to close the school due to extreme weather or other unforeseen events. In the event of severe weather we shall do everything we can to remain open but if at any time you wish to check if the school is open, you may do so in the following ways.

Hollyfield uses OpenCheck, a service operated by LGFL to provide up-to-date information to parents or carers, indicating whether a school is open or closed. In order to check our current status, simply browse to the OpenCheck website (http://map.lgfl.org.uk/opencheck), select “Kingston upon Thames” as the borough and “The Hollyfield School and Sixth Form Centre” as the school.

If you are unable to contact the main school switchboard, the status of the school can also be checked by calling 020 8408 7508 and keying in the school’s DCSF code: 3145404

Please also ensure you check the school website for regular updates.

Volunterring Opportunities

Be an active member of your local community by volunteering at Alfriston Day Centre & Outreach Service . We are looking for volunteers to help with all aspects of our Day Centre and Outreach befriending services. This would include:

Lunch service helpers - serving lunch to diners, or assisting our cook in the kitchen with plating up food, clearing/washing up duties. Also serving teas and coffees.

Transport team – Relief minibus drivers and/or escorts – both on our daily transport team or on our various outings throughout the year.

Entertainment volunteers - If you have a certificate to run chair-based exercises or can offer afternoon entertainment we would be delighted to hear from you.

Outreach Volunteer Befrienders - Our Outreach befriending service matches friendly volunteers with older, isolated members of the community who are unable to attend the Day Centre. We offer training and ongoing support to our volunteers in their befriending role.

Alfriston Day Centre has been at the heart of the local community for over 65 years at its address in Berrylands Road, Surbiton. It offers a warm, caring environment for older people in the community where they can enjoy social interaction, home-cooked lunch and afternoon entertainment along with regular outings and hairdressing and chiropody services. We are committed and dedicated to enhancing the lives of older people in our community.

Please call Lisa, Ayesha or Tina to find out more about the roles available and to arrange to come in and meet us.
