MESSAGE FROM THE DESK OF RATAN N. TATA

Ratan N. Tata Chairman

PREFACE

Energy security is one of the critical challenges facing India. The rapidly increasing consumption of fossil fuels containing hydrocarbons is a matter of concern as it involves large outgo of foreign exchange and also increase the pollutant load in the environment. Therefore, developing alternatives to fossil fuels is an urgent imperative and the production of bio-fuels as one such alternative seems to be a viable option.

All plants yielding oil are suitable for the production of bio-fuel, particularly bio-diesel, but in the face of strong consumer demand for edible oils in our country, it is non-edible oil yielding plants like Jatropha curcas that are being preferred for the production of bio-diesel on wastelands. The successful spread of bio-fuel plantations in rural areas also has significant potential for generating employment and reducing migration from the villages.

The planning commission has triggered several initiatives in the ongoing 10th five-year plan for promotion the public and private sectors are also promoting Jatropha production, processing and marketing in a big way. However, the initial 'teething' problems of this untested technology are yet to be overcome and the initiative still lacks the vigour to be scaled up to mass production.

To jumpstart and provide credibility to the initial work on bio-fuels, the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust had sanctioned an integrated project on Jatropha cultivation as a bio-diesel crop to Utthan (an Prayagraj-based NGO) in 2003. On the basis of the research and development work carried out under this project, information on various aspects of Jatropha cultivation and bio-diesel production was collected.

This book by Dr. Tewari, President of Utthan, presents valuable information on Jatropha cultivation techniques, subsequent bio-diesel production and its overall economic and energy implications. I hope this book will motivate both farmers and industry alike to substanitally increase Jatropha cultivation and bio-diesel production and advance India on the path of energy security. |06| www.siet.in

MESSAGE FROM THE DESK OF SECRETARY UTTHAN

Dr. K.K. Tewari Secretary, UTTHAN

“Our mission at SGI is that every student of ours becomes a success story and will create a history”

Constantly ranked as one of the top group of institutions in Uttar Pradesh, Shambhunath has completed more than a decade with great success as a premier technical and professional institution. It has emerged as one of the most preferred group of institutions in the field of Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, ITI, D. El. Ed. (B.T.C), BA LL.B, BBA & BCA. At SGI, we benchmark only against the best institutions around the world. Our faculty and senior team members attend Seminars, Workshops and travel to imbibe the best practices, so that we can give our students a solid foundation for learning.

The extensive campus, spread over about 25 acres, is well-built, strongly protected and attractively planned. Located about 7 km. away from Prayagraj Junction and 1 km. from Prayagraj Airport, it has all the basic facilities, which a student looks for. With an aim to remain quality conscious, efficient and responsive to today’s rapidly changing economic and technological developments, SGI has taken up the challenge not only to provide technical and corporate training to the students, but also make them self-confident and better human beings with leadership qualities. Being amongst the best education providers in Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam Technical University, and Prayagraj State University, our results have been exemplary, both from Merit as well as Placement perspective. Thirteen batches of B. Tech, Twelve Batches of MBA and Eleven Batches of B. Pharm. have already passed out. 89% of our present batch students have been placed in the best organizations of the country both in the government as well as corporate interface. Many have gone abroad for higher studies. Since its inception Shambhunath has continuously been making efforts to be a bench mark at several areas of education. Keeping this view in the mind, in the present year we are coming up with BBA and BCA Courses. We are determined to come in the field of medical, paramedical and other areas of education in near future and transform it in the shape of a university.

Established in 2004 with just 240 students with only one institute as SIET, SGI can boast of its success with a present strength of about 3000 students with 7 Institutes in a short span of time. Laying stress on discipline, we have a very effective Proctorial board. Having the best faculties and instructors in the respective fields, we ensure to fulfill the aspirations of those willing to have a promising career and success in life, and invite them to be a part of Shambhunath.

I extend my thanks to Sri Grish R Shastri, Director, Bank of India, Prayagraj who has been associated with our institutes for the Academic development and placement activities. www.siet.in |15|

Looking towards the pandemic situation Shambhunath has taken several steps to avoid it.

It is mandatory for all to wear proper face mask or face shield.

Outside the college main gate more than 10 foot paddle operated soap dispensers and hand wash basins have been installed, the people are allowed to enter only after they wash their hands.

Taking the battle against COVID-19 transmission to a new level, Shambhunath has got installed sensor controlled timer regulated sanitization tunnels at the gates of all the constituents’ colleges. Before it people go thorough no contact thermal scanning.

Conference rooms, finance office, library, admission cell, visitors’ lounge, reception and every other area are regularly and thoroughly sanitized every day.

Access to all the Offices and Faculty chambers is made only after sanitization through paddle sanitizer which is installed at every door.

All the washrooms have liquid dispenser soaps. The washrooms are also frequently sanitized.

We are committed to follow proper Social Distance at our campus.

DIGITAL LEARNING PLATFORM

Looking towards the Pandemic Condition of Covid-19 Shambhunath has taken an initiative to run on line classes. We started the classes well before the lockdown; from 16th of March by launching a Shambhunath Digital Education. We conducted classes through You Tube, Google Meet, Google Class Room, Zoom App and WhatsApp with Video Lectures, Audio Lectures, Screen Sharing, PPTs, PDF etc.

To check the response ratio and grasping ability of the students, we conducted on line examination too. We got excellent response in examination; all the students appeared in the examination. We are ready to use Digital Platform (Study, Assessment and Evaluation) in the time of need. |28| www.siet.in

NCC (CTR-I) WING

We have NCC Wing for the over development of a student. The National Cadet Corps is the youth wing of Armed Forces with its Headquarters at New Delhi, Delhi, India. It is open to school and college students on voluntary basis. National Cadet Corps is a Tri-Services Organisation, comprising the Army, Navy and Air Wing, engaged in grooming the youth of the country into disciplined and patriotic citizens. The National Cadet Corps in India is a voluntary organisation which recruits cadets from high schools, higher secondary, colleges and universities all over India. The Cadets are given basic military training in small arms and parades. The officers and cadets have no liability for active military service once they complete their course.

NCC is an Organization engaged in conducting constructive activities for all the cadets under its fold. Students who have undergone training at the NCC have self discipline, hardwork, leadership qualities and good value system. NCC also helps in shaping them in to dynamic and responsible citizens of India. I am confident that NCC at PSG Tech would continue to be a platform for grooming tomorrow's citizens and leaders, and help in "Nation Building". www.siet.in |29|

AWARENESS TOWARDS ENVIRONMENT Solar Energy Solar energy creates clean, renewable power from the sun and benefits the environment. Alternaves to fossil fuels reduce carbon footprint at home and abroad, reducing greenhouse gases around the globe. Solar is known to have a favorable impact on the environment the SGI is self sufficient by solar energy.

Bio Fuel from Jatropha Seeds In our area we have movated and facilitated the farmers to do farming for Jatropha. We have established Bio Diesel extracon plant at our premises. Jatropha Seeds are rich resources for Bio fuel development in India. Jatropha oil has been used in India for several decades as biodiesel for the diesel fuel requirements of remote rural and forest communies; Jatropha Oil can be used directly aer extracon (i.e. without refining) in diesel generators and engines. Jatropha has the potenal to provide economic benefits at the local level since under suitable management it has the potenal to grow in dry marginal non-agricultural lands, thereby allowing villagers and farmers to leverage non-farm land for income generaon. As well, increased Jatropha oil producon delivers economic benefits to India on the macroeconomic or naonal level as it reduces the naon's fossil fuel import bill for diesel producon (the main transportaon fuel used in the country); minimising the expenditure of India's foreign-currency reserves for fuel allowing India to increase its growing foreign currency reserves (which can be beer spent on capital expenditures for industrial inputs and producon). And since Jatropha oil is carbon-neutral, large-scale producon will improve the country's carbon emissions profile. Finally, since no food producing farmland is required for producing this biofuel (unlike corn or sugar cane ethanol, or palm oil diesel), it is considered the most polically and morally acceptable choice among India's current biofuel opons.
