And on Piano ...Nicky Hopkins: the Extraordinary Life of Rocks Greatest Session Man Free FREE AND ON PIANO ...NICKY HOPKINS: THE EXTRAORDINARY LIFE OF ROCKS GREATEST SESSION MAN PDF Julian Dawson,Klaus Voormann | 384 pages | 01 Apr 2011 | Plus One Press | 9780984436224 | English | San Francisco, CA, United Kingdom Meet Session Superstar Nicky Hopkins | Best Classic Bands Yet even many classic rock fans worth their salt who And on Piano .Nicky Hopkins: The Extraordinary Life of Rocks Greatest Session Man easily rattle off the names of the members of many bands he worked with — The Rolling Stones, Kinks, Who, Led Zeppelin, Jefferson Airplane and even The Beatles as well as Spinal Tap really, no joke; he played on Break Like the Wind to name literally but a few — might possibly be stumped to identify Hopkins much less quantify his near-immeasurable contribution to songs and albums so many of us know and love. But he had the ability to turn an ordinary track into a gem — slotting in the right chord at the right time or dropping a set of triplets around the back beat, just enough to make you want to dance. On a ballad, he could sense which notes to wrap around the song without being obtrusive. At age three he began playing piano. Hopkins left the Davies band to undergo operations that nearly killed him and sidelined his career for more then a year-and-a-half. On regaining his health he decided to eschew the rigors of touring for session work. But he was upset when Village Green … came out and the keyboard work was credited to Ray Davies with no mention of Hopkins, who said he had also composed songs and helped develop the musical framework for the concept album. The incident left a rather bad taste in the mouth of the normally quite easygoing Hopkins, who by evidence of all the varied acts he played with got along well with most everyone. Ray Davies is so tight his arse squeaks when he walks. At the time, his session work became as much of a grind as the road. He also later became a member of Quicksilver Messenger Service. During this creatively fertile time of the early s, Hopkins — along with Ry Cooder, Mick Jagger, And on Piano .Nicky Hopkins: The Extraordinary Life of Rocks Greatest Session Man Wyman and Charlie Watts — released one of the most revered archaeological side-projects in the Rolling Stones hagiography — the album titled Jamming with Edward! Hopkins also contributed to the Jamming With Edward! Some of the material from that project was also used on the Jamming … album. He was also a key player on Exile on Main Street. Asked to hit the road with the group on their next outing, Hopkins had to beg off for health reasons. But they continued to utilize him on recordings well into the s. My interview with Nicky for Crawdaddy magazine in was my first interview with a rock star. And to many of us in the music game, he was a rock star indeed. The indelible impression he left was even furthered when I caught him again with the Stones in July from the front row of Madison Square Garden. A low-key dude, Hopkins sat in his room like a china figurine contemplating the delicate patterns of his own musical inspiration. While his wife Dolly And on Piano .Nicky Hopkins: The Extraordinary Life of Rocks Greatest Session Man phone calls and travel arrangements in a corner of the room, Nicky talked dreamily about his Mill Valley hideaway, where he and Dolly had been spending the last couple of years living the life, making music, writing songs with a cassette player atop his piano, and pursuing his hobby of collecting tins. His can collection of many years was the subject of an oil painting on the back of his album cover. It makes much more sense, really. But Hopkins also sang a lot on the album, which marked the work as a breakthrough for him. It was done pretty loosely, really. We went to England in the beginning of September and George was supposed to be recording. But he phoned from abroad and said that he was going to be another two weeks. He knew I was going to be recording, and could I use the time? I said sure and got all the basic tracks in those two weeks. He had high hopes for the album but was realistic. Harry Nilsson helped out a lot with the lyrics. Why not call it Toilet Paper, or Fluorescent Lights? Sadly, all the talk of hitting the road with an all-star band never came to fruition. That same year another solo album was recorded that remains as yet unreleased. Hopkins also branched out into composing soundtracks. His poor health continued to plague him, and drugs and drinking also became an issue. During those years Hopkins briefly returned to England to live for a short spell, did time in Los Angeles, and then settled in Nashville, TN, where he died on September 6, from complications after intestinal surgery. His friends and fans regularly campaign for his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But for all his accomplishments and the wonderful parts and music he created, Hopkins remains sadly unsung. They do their job for a fee and then leave, rarely seeing their names on the records. You only miss them when they are not there. Photos by Becky Danese pic. Just two examples. I had Edward and Tin Man. They were the spice on many of those albums! Your data will be safe! Seems to me anybody who was anybody in my little scene at the time in the City, on the Coastside, and on the Peninsula; who cared about both men happened to show up- I, myself, had a little luck in more ways than one, with a happy girlfriend who'd often score a pair of tickets to whatever was happening at Winterland any given weekend. I have recordings of both evenings that prove it thanks to Uncle Bill's Vault. A little off-handed "Jingle Bells" has been making the rounds recently among Dead freaks on Facebook- that comes from the later of those 2 shows. There are a lot of reasons I felt drawn to Mr. Hopkins, not least his long associations with almost everyone we grew up digging on the radio, both here in the Bay Area and in London. This is an excellent book which limits the author's participation to the preface, and leaves the history intact without any egoic histrionics- so much like Nicky himself, the almost egoless master of the keys- the book is broken up less into consecutive chronology than it is by those associations, and the periods of his life are primarily defined by the early associations with his clients, here and there. He left behind so many who appreciate his personality and his musicianship and not least of all his remarkable courage in the face of horrible physical hardships which dogged him his entire life. This is a great book about a remarkable individual and so interesting I got it all in within 24 hours. Yet one crucial part of that story has never been fully told: the role of Brian Jones, the visionary who founded the band and meticulously controlled their early sound, only to be dethroned by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Tormented by paranoia and drug problems, Jones drowned at the age of twenty-seven. Drawing on new information and interviews with Richards, Andrew Oldham, and Marianne Faithfull, among dozens of others, Brian Jones lays bare the Rolling Stones’ full story, in all its glory and squalor. By far and away the best book ever written about Brian Jones. Paul Trynka interviewed over 100 people. He spends quite a lot of time on Brians very early days in Cheltenham England. He covers his family life, his social life, his rebellious life and most importantly his musical life. All this before he even hit London where he impressed everyone with his incredible slide guitar.

420 F.Supp. 177 United States District Court, S. D. New York. BRIGHT TUNES MUSIC CORP., Plaintiff, v. HARRISONGS MUSIC, LTD., et al., Defendants. No. 7 1 Civ. 602. | Aug. 31, 1976. | As Amended Sept. 1, 1976. OPINION AND ORDER OWEN, District Judge. This is an action in which it is claimed that a successful song, My Sweet Lord, listing George Harrison as the composer, is plagiarized from an earlier successful song, He’s So Fine, composed by Ronald Mack, recorded by a singing group called the “Chiffons,” the copyright of which is owned by plaintiff, Bright Tunes Music Corp. He’s So Fine, recorded in 1962, is a catchy tune consisting essentially of four repetitions of a very short basic musical phrase, “sol-mi-re,” (hereinafter motif A),1 altered as necessary to fit the words, followed by four repetitions of another short basic musical phrase, “sol-la-do-la-do,” (hereinafter motif B).2 While neither motif is novel, the four repetitions of A, followed by four repetitions of B, is a highly unique pattern.3 In addition, in the second use of the motif B series, there is a grace note inserted making the phrase go “sol-la-do-la-re-do.”4 My Sweet Lord, recorded first in 1970, also uses the same motif A (modified to suit the words) four times, followed by motif B, repeated three times, not four. In place of He’s So Fine’s fourth repetition of motif B, My Sweet Lord has a transitional passage of musical attractiveness of the same approximate length, with the identical grace note in the identical second repetition.5 The harmonies of both songs are identical.6 *179 George Harrison, a former member of The Beatles, was aware of He’s So Fine.

  • Billy Preston
Billy Preston Billy Preston was a soul singer and pianist who, in addition to having a successful solo career, collaborated with some of the greatest names in the music industry, including the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Little Richard, Ray Charles, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Sam Cooke, Sammy Davis Jr., Sly Stone, Aretha Franklin, the Jackson 5, Quincy Jones, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Often called “the Fifth Beatle,” this former child prodigy left one of the most profound and prolific legacies in music. William Everett Preston was born in Houston, Texas in 1946. He began playing piano at age three, and by ten he had joined the band of gospel great Mahalia Jackson. At age twelve he appeared in the 1958 film St. Louis Blues, portraying blues composer W.C. Handy as a young man. In the 1960s Preston performed with Little Richard and Ray Charles, and became a regular singer and pianist on the ABC television series Shindig. Preston went on to a successful career as a session musician, including lending his talents to the Beatle’s Let It Be album. That collaboration led to his signing to the Beatles’ Apple label, and in 1969 his solo effort, produced by George Harrison, was released. The album That's the Way God Planned It and the single of the same name met with limited success, but in 1972 he released an instrumental funk single, "Outa-Space," that reached #2 in the U.S. and won the Grammy award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. Over the next two years, Preston enjoyed more number one hits including "Will It Go Round In Circles" and "Nothing From Nothing." He was the first guest musical artist on the premier episode of the popular TV show Saturday Night Live.

YOUNG AMERICANS TO EMOTIONAL RESCUE: SELECTING MEETINGS BETWEEN DISCO AND ROCK, 1975-1980 Daniel Kavka A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2010 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Katherine Meizel © 2010 Daniel Kavka All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Disco-rock, composed of disco-influenced recordings by rock artists, was a sub-genre of both disco and rock in the 1970s. Seminal recordings included: David Bowie’s Young Americans; The Rolling Stones’ “Hot Stuff,” “Miss You,” “Dance Pt.1,” and “Emotional Rescue”; KISS’s “Strutter ’78,” and “I Was Made For Lovin’ You”; Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy“; and Elton John’s Thom Bell Sessions and Victim of Love. Though disco-rock was a great commercial success during the disco era, it has received limited acknowledgement in post-disco scholarship. This thesis addresses the lack of existing scholarship pertaining to disco-rock. It examines both disco and disco-rock as products of cultural shifts during the 1970s. Disco was linked to the emergence of underground dance clubs in New York City, while disco-rock resulted from the increased mainstream visibility of disco culture during the mid seventies, as well as rock musicians’ exposure to disco music. My thesis argues for the study of a genre (disco-rock) that has been dismissed as inauthentic and commercial, a trend common to popular music discourse, and one that is linked to previous debates regarding the social value of pop music.

Mick Jagger. Archive to 1962 Photo: Photofest. As the “world’s greatest rock ’n’ roll band” celebrates its golden jubilee this year, the Museum of Modern Art in New York pays tribute with a heady cinematic survey: “THE ROLLING STONES: 50 YEARS OF FILM” (NOVEMBER 15–DECEMBER 2). But 2012 marks another anniversary as well. Forty years ago, the Stones embarked on a legendary tour to promote their new album, Exile on Main St., and they engaged two very different filmmakers—Robert Frank and Rollin Binzer—to document the affair on celluloid, producing wildly divergent results: Cocksucker Blues and Ladies and Gentlemen: The Rolling Stones, respectively. Film historian DAVID E. JAMES traces the events that would ultimately transform the band’s extraordinary engagement with the medium—and with the very public on which not only their stardom but their cultural significance depended. WITH THE BEATLES’ FINAL PERFORMANCE on the roof of the Apple Records building at the beginning of 1969, documented in Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s film Let It Be (1970), the Rolling Stones’ claim to being the greatest rock band in the world was now uncontested.

MUSIC – Muddy Waters, Rollin’ Stone via Spotify (Play 30secs then turn down) It all started with Muddy Waters. A chance meeting between 2 old friends at Dartford railway station marked the beginning of 50 years of rock and roll. In the early 1950s, Keith Richards and Mick Jagger were childhood friends and classmates at Wentworth Primary School in Kent until their families moved apart.[8] In 1960, the pair met again on their way to college at Dartford railway station. The Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters records that Jagger carried revealed a mutual interest. They began forming a band with Dick Taylor and Brian Jones from Blues Incorporated. This band also contained two other future members of the Rolling Stones: Ian Stewart and Charlie Watts.[11] So how did the name come about? Well according to Richards, Jones christened the band during a phone call to Jazz News.
