Yet one crucial part of that story has never been fully told: the role of Brian Jones, the visionary who founded the band and meticulously controlled their early sound, only to be dethroned by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Tormented by paranoia and drug problems, Jones drowned at the age of twenty-seven. Drawing on new information and interviews with Richards, Andrew Oldham, and Marianne Faithfull, among dozens of others, Brian Jones lays bare the Rolling Stones’ full story, in all its glory and squalor. By far and away the best book ever written about Brian Jones. Paul Trynka interviewed over 100 people. He spends quite a lot of time on Brians very early days in Cheltenham England. He covers his family life, his social life, his rebellious life and most importantly his musical life. All this before he even hit London where he impressed everyone with his incredible slide guitar. Especially Keith Richards who was in the audience that night. He also objectively covers that fateful night Brian died. A lot has been written about his death. Paul covers it all. I have read everything about Brian Jones and thought not much more could be written. Paul found people that have never commented before. It is a very fresh approach to a man that has been marginalized by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards for the last 50 years. And Paul points out why Mick, Keith and Andrew Oldham conspired to destroy Brian. It was always said that Brian couldnt write songs. Paul presents proof that he could and did write for the Rolling Stones and received no credit. Paul presents all the lies and myths that the world was tricked into believing. Brian Jones was far more important to the success of the Rolling Stones than he will ever get credit for. Paul objectively points out his contributions with all the interviews he did. Brian Jones was a very complicated person. Paul covers his ups, his downs and all the turmoil in his life. This will probably be the last book that will effectively cover the life and times of Brian Jones. I highly recommend it. Brian Jones left his mark on the world because of his passion for R&B. And because of that passion the Rolling Stones became the legendary band that they are today. Paul effectively gives Brian his due respect through all the people that were there in the 50s and 60s who were around Brian. No matter how hard Mick and Keith try to erase this man from history they just cant. The legacy of Brian Jones is here to stay and Paul Trynka makes sure of that. R.I.P. Brian! YOUNG AMERICANS TO EMOTIONAL RESCUE: SELECTING MEETINGS BETWEEN DISCO AND ROCK, 1975-1980 Daniel Kavka A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2010 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Katherine Meizel © 2010 Daniel Kavka All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Disco-rock, composed of disco-influenced recordings by rock artists, was a sub-genre of both disco and rock in the 1970s. Seminal recordings included: David Bowie’s Young Americans; The Rolling Stones’ “Hot Stuff,” “Miss You,” “Dance Pt.1,” and “Emotional Rescue”; KISS’s “Strutter ’78,” and “I Was Made For Lovin’ You”; Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy“; and Elton John’s Thom Bell Sessions and Victim of Love. Though disco-rock was a great commercial success during the disco era, it has received limited acknowledgement in post-disco scholarship. This thesis addresses the lack of existing scholarship pertaining to disco-rock. It examines both disco and disco-rock as products of cultural shifts during the 1970s. Disco was linked to the emergence of underground dance clubs in New York City, while disco-rock resulted from the increased mainstream visibility of disco culture during the mid seventies, as well as rock musicians’ exposure to disco music. My thesis argues for the study of a genre (disco-rock) that has been dismissed as inauthentic and commercial, a trend common to popular music discourse, and one that is linked to previous debates regarding the social value of pop music.

Mr. Richards has a 3 o'clock appointment. "Come on in, he'll be here in a minute," an assistant says — and here he comes in a minute, at 3:01. This from a man who once prided himself for operating on Keith Time, as in: the security staff ate the shepherd's pie that Keith wanted in his dressing room? Then everyone in this packed stadium can bloody well wait. The Rolling Stones don't play until another shepherd's pie shows up. Chalk up the promptness to the man's new incarnation: he is now Keith Richards, distinguished author. True, he is far from the only rock star to turn memoirist, and far from the only Rolling Stone to write a book about himself — very much about himself. The raven-haired Ron Wood wrote "Ronnie," in which he described Brian Jones as "me in a blond wig." Bill Wyman, the band's retired bass player and bean counter, wrote "Stone Alone," in which not a 15-shilling demo disc went unmentioned.

A chance meeting between 2 old friends at Dartford railway station marked the beginning of 50 years of rock and roll. In the early 1950s, Keith Richards and Mick Jagger were childhood friends and classmates at Wentworth Primary School in Kent until their families moved apart.[8] In 1960, the pair met again on their way to college at Dartford railway station. The Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters records that Jagger carried revealed a mutual interest. They began forming a band with Dick Taylor and Brian Jones from Blues Incorporated. This band also contained two other future members of the Rolling Stones: Ian Stewart and Charlie Watts.[11] So how did the name come about? Well according to Richards, Jones christened the band during a phone call to Jazz News.

Gary James' Interview With Bernie Bollendorf Of The Rolling Stones Tribute The Glimmer Twins Ads by Google The Rolling Stones Keith Richards New Songs and Lyrics The Band Music The Glimmer Twins. Now there's a name that sounds familiar. It was given to Rolling Stones members Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. It also happens to be the name of the Rolling Stones Tribute Act, The Glimmer Twins. Bernie Bollendorf, who portrays Keith Richards in The Glimmer Twins, talked to us about his group. Q - Bernie, one thing I've noticed is that most Stones tribute acts include a Mick Taylor guitarist, not a Brian Jones guitarist. Only The Chesterfield Kings had a Brian Jones guy. Now, why is that? A - Mick Taylor was the most versatile guitar player they had. That's when they hit their stride, with Mick Taylor. He brought a different element to the band. This fabulous Blues lead guitar player that they had never had before. Brian Jones was a multi-talented instrumentalist, but Mick Taylor, like Ron Woods, was like a breath of fresh air. Mick Taylor, fabulous player, but looked like a microphone stand onstage. Ron Wood comes in, not as versatile, but a great player and he's jumpin' all over the stage, jumpin' on Jagger's back. A whole new life. Mick never really interacted with Keith onstage. Keith had his back to the crowd. He was tryin' to stand up the whole show. (laughs). Q - Are you one of those guys that tries to learn everything you can about Keith Richards? When his autobiography came out, did you run to the store to buy it? A - My girlfriend bought it for me.

  • (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction” by the Rolling Stones (1965) Added to the National Registry: 2006 Essay by Dan Leroy (Guest Post)*
“(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction” by the Rolling Stones (1965) Added to the National Registry: 2006 Essay by Dan LeRoy (guest post)* The Rolling Stones Not long before his untimely death in February 2020, guitarist Andy Gill of the British post-punk band Gang of Four was reminiscing about his love of The Rolling Stones’ “Satisfaction.” “That riff!” Gill enthused. “It was perfect. Every morning when I went to school, and every night when I came home, I marched along to it.”1 Former Gang of Four singer Jon King had innumerable disputes with his old bandmate. But on the subject of “Satisfaction,” the two had long ago reached a satisfying equilibrium. “I doubt there’s many rock music fans who don’t revere ‘Satisfaction,’” King observed. His description of the song’s attributes was admirably succinct: “Killer riff, spare, focused with intense and deep lyrics about alienation in a new consumer culture.” That two post-punk legends like Gill and King would revere “Satisfaction” is hardly a surprise. The divide between old-guard bands like the Stones and the then-new wave in Britain was never as pronounced as it first appeared. But what made the song singular in its time is, paradoxically, what also makes it universal, today and forevermore. More than any other song of its era, it embodies discontent and alienation--and not just the sort beginning to surface in the mid-Sixties. 1 After Gill’s death, an interview with the journalist and author Dan Epstein surfaced in “Flood” magazine. In that previously-unpublished conversation from a few years prior, Gill revealed that he had auditioned for Jagger’s band in the mid-Eighties, and that in rehearsal, he upstaged an outraged Jeff Beck by talking the guitar solo in “Miss You.” A number one single on both sides of the Atlantic in the summer of 1965, it captured the “rumbling of rebellion,” as guitarist Keith Richards put it, and became the Stones’ signature hit for nearly half a decade, until “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” arrived to supplant it as the decade changed.

  • In August 1969, the Massive, Three-Day Woodstock Music & Art
In August 1969, the massive, three-day Woodstock Music & Art Fair had proved that hundreds of thousands of young people could gather peacefully even in a seemingly chaotic environment rich with sex, drugs and rock and roll. Four months later, it would become clear that Woodstock owed its success not to the inherent peacefulness of the 1960s youth culture, but to the organizational acumen of the event's producers. That idea was proven in the violent, uncontrolled chaos of the disastrous Altamont Speedway Free Festival, held on this day in 1969 in the northern California hills 60 miles east of San Francisco. Altamont was the brainchild of the Rolling Stones, who hoped to cap off their U.S. tour in late 1969 with a concert that would be the West Coast equivalent of Woodstock, in both scale and spirit. Unlike Woodstock, however, which was the result of months of careful planning by a team of well-funded organizers, Altamont was a largely improvised affair that did not even have a definite venue arranged just days before the event. It was only on Thursday, December 4, 1969, that organizers settled on the Altamont Speedway location for a free concert that was by then scheduled to include Santana; the Jefferson Airplane; Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young; and the Grateful Dead, all in support of the headlining Stones. The event would also include, infamously, several dozen members the Hells Angels motorcycle gang acting as informal security staff in exchange for $500 worth of beer as a “gratuity.” It was dark by the time the concert’s next-to-last act, the Grateful Dead, was scheduled to appear.
