Editorial

Dear readers,

We are delighted to present to you the latest collection of our students’ writings. Each year, we try to gather a wide range of different writing topics of different levels for you to enjoy and learn from.

At this school, we have always believed that reading is one of the most important skills to improve language ability. For this reason, we have always tried to motivate our students to read more.

Apart from immersing your range of vocabulary and exposing you to different types of writings, reading is also a form of entertainment. It stimulates imagination and creativity. Good stories may make you laugh, cry or care about the characters.

We cannot stress to you enough how important and for reading is. Whenever you have free time, whether it is 5 minutes or 20 minutes, pick up this copy of Evergreen or another book and immerse yourself in joy of reading.

We arrived at the camp at three o’clock. First, we played ball games. We were happy but Lawrance was naughty. He pushed Clara on the ground. Then, Jenny shouted at Lawrance. Lawrance cried! We ran and told Jenny she should not shout at Lawrance. And Lawrance said sorry to Clara. After that, we played happily again.

Then, we put up the tents on the grass. Jenny and Clara collected the firewood. They made a fire on the beach. Next, we had a barbecue. We ate fish balls, chicken wings and meat.

After that, we walked in the forest. It was very exciting! It was dark and wet. Lawrance fell down. We saw a lion! We were scared! We ran to our tents very fast. Oh no! it was just a lion on Jenny’s T-shirt only. We laughed happily.

Finally, we were tired. We slept in our tents.

In the afternoon, they all asked the leader, ‘Where is our lunch?’ Jim pointed to a box and said, ‘There are some sandwiches in that box!’ They ate all the sandwiches. Then, they rode their bicycles to the swimming pool. They swam in the swimming pool. Alvin swam very fast but Jack and Gray swam very slowly. Jim slept again.

At last, they needed to go home. Everyone wanted to play again but they didn’t ask Jim because he was too lazy.

I am a student of your sister school in HK. I would like to be your pen friend.

HK is a busy city. The citizens in HK are always working hard. Although it is small, it is very beautiful. There are a lot of tall buildings.

I have a funny cousin and a strict mother. My cousin’s name is Angie. She is only two years old but she can play some notes on the piano. She loves playing the piano. Whenever I play the piano, she will climb on the piano chair to play some notes on the piano. She does not like to sleep. She’d rather walk on the floor and play with toys. I have a strict mother. Sometimes, she is kind. She is a senior administration officer. She works from nine o’clock in the morning till ten o’clock at night. She is very hard- working.

I have four hobbies, which include reading, dancing, playing the piano and collecting stamps. My mum taught me how to read when I was four, and then I started to enjoy reading. At first, I only liked reading magazines and comics. But now, I like reading novels and encyclopedias best. I like dancing because I like turning and tossing around on the stage. I like playing the piano because it can train up my fingers. I like collecting stamps because I can review the beautiful stamps with my mum whenever I am free.

Please write soon.

Best wishes, Daisy

How are you? I write this letter to you because I want to give you some advice about your health. I really want to help you.

I think you are eating unhealthily and you look a bit overweight.

I think you need to eat more fruit and vegetables because they have a lot of vitamins and minerals. You also need to eat more dairy products because they make our teeth and bones strong.

You need to eat less sugary food because it is bad for our teeth and eating too much sugary food will make us fat.

Besides having a healthy balanced diet, you need to do more exercise to keep fit. You can also set up a timetable and get up early. I hope you can take my advice.

Love, Sean

When I was around one and a half years old, I had a small 80

mouth and short hair. Everyone said I was cute. I liked playing with Barbies because I thought Barbies were beautiful. I always played with them with my family.

I could not put on my shoes or tie my shoelaces by myself when I was three. Mum told me that I took my brother’s toothbrush to brush my teeth. I could brush my teeth with toothpaste by myself when I was five years old. My parents were happy and bought my favourite chocolate flavour toothpaste for me.

By Zachary Li

When I was three months old, I had small eyes and thin hair. 81

I liked reading books, drawing pictures and playing with Lego. I liked playing cooking toys with my elder sister best.

Mum told me that I could stand up properly by myself when I was eight months old. I clapped happily and my mother was so surprised that I could stand up properly. I was scared of water when I was one year old. However, one day, my mother took me to the swimming pool. I was not afraid. When I was swimming, I was so happy and not afraid of water anymore.

When I was four, I had big eyes, a round face and really short 82

hair. People said I was very cute and looked like a doll. I could dance when I was four and I was good at it. I really enjoyed dancing on the stage.

I always remember one interesting thing about my childhood. One time, when I performed dancing, I saw a slide on the stage. I climbed up the stairs and played many times. I felt very excited and totally forgot about the performance. Fortunately, I heard the music and I could get back to the team on time. I even got an award!

When I was four, I had big eyes, ears and short hair. I liked 83

playing with dolls and Barbies. It was because they were soft and cute. My brother and I played with them all the time. I liked going to the playground to play and watching the flowers in the playground because they were very colourful and smelled good.

Mum told me that I played with dolls and Barbies for hours every day. I could change Barbie’s clothes by myself when I was two. My parents were amazed. It was because they did not know I could do this job. Then they took a photo of the dolls, Barbies and me and sent them to their friends.

When I was six months old, I had big eyes and a small month. 84

People said I was cute because I always smiled. I liked playing with toy cars very much. I had various types of toy cars, for example, a green minibus, a red taxi and a yellow bus. I played with my mother all the time. When I was three years old, I could eat by myself. I could also write numbers by myself. However I couldn’t comb my hair by myself at that time.

One night, when my dad and I played with toy cars, my mum opened the door and took the rubbish outside. My toy car ran out of my home. I did not put on my elaborate shoes and went out to get the car. When I got home, my feet were very dirty. My mum was angry and asked me not to do it again. At that time, I was only two years old.

When I was three, I had two big eyes and short hair. I was 85

unhappy because some people said I looked like a boy. I liked playing the drum and the piano when I was small. I always played the piano with my sister because we both liked music. I could do anything I liked so I was very happy.

Dad told me that when I fell down, I stood up rapidly without crying and I continued to play. Mum told me that I always felt tired when doing homework but when I played games, I never felt tired. I was not a hard-working girl when I was small.

When I was two and a half years old, I had a small and a

little bit round face. I had short hair, big eyes and a big nose. I had a serious face with no smile. I liked to play with toy cars and vehicles such as fire engines, cement mixers, ambulances and police cars very much.

I was a creative kid. I used wooden blocks to build a cement mixer by myself. I also used Play-Doh to make my Chinese name when I was three. My kindergarten teacher and my parents were surprised.

When I was three and a half years old, I went to Chime Long with my parents and cousins. I carried a white baby tiger and fed it. I was afraid of it and it was also afraid of me. I remembered when we went to watch a circus show. We sat in the first row because we wanted to see clearly. But when we were watching a white tiger show, a tiger was so nervous that it wanted to wee on us. We ran away from it. We almost got wet. We were all amazed.

When I was four, I had a birthday party in my kindergarten. My classmates and I played games with our parents. Some mothers made cakes and some fathers prepared big presents for each child. This was my happiest birthday party.

Last Sunday, my friend and I went to Delicious World Restaurant. I was very excited.

93

After we entered the restaurant, we ordered some starters including green salad with scallops. The food was delicious! I looked forward to the main courses. I ordered spaghetti with meat sauce and chicken curry with rice for the main courses.

Something terrible happened when the food came. When I removed the cover of the dish, I saw a cockroach crawling on the food. The scene was disgusting! I was angry. I complained to the manager. He apologized to us and promised me this would not happen again.

I was sad and disappointed by this restaurant. I would never dine at this restaurant again!

Tom is a tubby boy. He is not eating healthily because he always eats French fries, fried chicken and drinks a lot of coke. They are junk food and they are bad for him.

95

To be healthy, he should eat more vegetables and fruit because they have vitamins and minerals. They have fiber too! He should eat fewer donuts, sweets and chips. Besides, he should drink fewer soft drinks because they can make him fat.

Besides having a healthy diet, he can do more exercise such as jogging, swimming and cycling to keep himself fit.

By Polly Ng

Tom is fat. He does not have good eating habits.

Tom likes eating unhealthy food, especially sugary food like sweets, ice cream, donuts, sugar, chocolate and lollipops. Too

96

much sugary food is bad for him because it is bad for his teeth and makes him fat.

He could eat less sugary food and eat different colours of vegetables, fruit and grain products because they are good for him. Vegetables and fruit help him to keep healthy and they have different vitamins and minerals. Grain products are also important. They give him energy to run and jump. He should also drink more water because water can help him remove the waste in his boby. He should drink six to eight glasses of water daily but too much water is also bad for his body.

He should also go to the doctor to do a body check every month because he needs to have a doctor to follow his eating habits. He also needs to do some exercise such as running and swimming to keep himself fit.

The advice is good for Tom. If he doesn’t follow the advice, then he will be fatter and fatter. I hope he will follow my advice and then he will become healthy.

Last night, I saw two robbers at a jewellery shop when I was walking my dog.

The two robbers were wearing masks. They broke into the jewellery shop. The customers were so frightened. They did not 116

move. The shop owner pressed the alarm. Suddenly a robber fired a gun. The other robber smashed the jewellary display cases and took all the jewellery. They wanted to leave but fortunately the policemen came at that time. Needless to say, the policemen arrested them. The shop owner thanked the policemen. Jewellery

Last night, I was in a jewellery shop because I wanted to buy a diamond.

Suddenly, a black car came and two men with masks took a gun and ran into the jewellery shop. They forced two salesmen 117

to give the jewellery to them. One salesman pressed the alarm so that the police would come but the two foolish robbers didn’t know. When one of the salesman was running out of the shop, the robber saw him so he fired his gun. Everyone was scared. Another robber took a hammer to hit the glass. They took all the silver, gold, diamonds, earrings, necklaces and rings away. When the two robbers ran out, five policemen caught them. One of the robbers shouted, ‘Who pressed the alarm? I will kill him!’ and the police took the robbers into the police car.

Our Swimming Gala was held on 1st April.

We went to the swimming pool in Kwun Tong. It was big and had many swimming lanes. We were excited about it. I had a special duty that day. Miss Yim came and asked me to record the competition. I was scared because I had never tried it 118

before. Luckily, I was not working on my own. I had some classmates working with me.

During the Swimming Gala, there were only free style and breaststroke competitions. We did not have backstroke or butterfly stroke.

I am not a good swimmer so I did not join any events. Many of my classmates joined and they swam fast. We cheered and applauded when they were near the finishing line. I felt proud of my classmate, Vivid, because he won the gold medals in two events.

Although I felt tired after that day, it was a good day because I learned how to make a video recording. It was fun and I hope I will have the opportunity to record the competition again next year.

Last Sunday, Susan went to the shopping mall to buy something. She saw a very lovely robot cat in a toy shop. She loved it very much so she bought it.

At home, the robot cat could help Susan to wash the dishes 119

and clean the floor. One day, Susan found the robot cat could speak so she thought that this cat was clever.

Susan brought it to school. In the English lesson, the robot cat was sleeping and Susan’s teacher did not see it.

After lunch, Susan had her last lesson and the robot cat woke up. It was a Maths lesson. Susan was reading the book and the classroom was quiet. Suddenly, the robot cat came out and flew away. Susan wanted to catch the robot cat but she could not catch it.

Finally, the robot cat flew away. Susan was upset because her lovely robot cat flew away.

I went to the toy shop with my mum and dad today because it was my birthday and they wanted to buy me a gift. When we went inside the toy shop, I saw a man who was playing video games attentively. I thought he was the salesperson. Then I saw 120

a lovely teddy bear in a red bow tie.

After that, I asked the salesperson about the price of the teddy bear. Shockingly, he shouted at me! I felt unhappy because he behaved rudely and impatiently so I started crying. The owner of the toy shop heard the noise and came out. He asked what happened and my parents told him how rude the salesperson was. The owner was angry and shouted at the salesperson. He also told me not to cry and gave me the teddy bear for free.

Now the teddy bear is mine!

Two weeks ago, two robbers robbed Frank’s Bank. When they came out with two money bags, they saw a quirky man stopping them run away.

The quirky man was Captain Underpants. He was the man with the bulging stomach and the bare chest. He only wore a cape and white underpants. He had a bald head, which looked 121

like an onion. He had small eyes, a bulbous nose and a big mouth. He was fat and short. His appearance was as funny as a clown. The robbers thought Captain Underpants was a fool and they burst into laughter. The robbers pointed at Captain Underpants and dropped their money bags.

Suddenly, the robbers darted away since they saw the police coming. They left the money bags on the ground. Captain Underpants stood there and posed like a superhero. The policeman yelled at him but he showed no response.

After a while, Captain Underpants ran as quick as a flash to catch the two robbers. The two robbers felt very frightened so they fell down. Captain Underpants caught them quickly and easily.

The policeman complimented Captain Underpants and awarded a ‘Good Person’ flag to him. He felt very happy and he was proud of himself.

Last Thursday afternoon, two naughty robbers robbed a lot of money from Frank’s Bank. They carried the heavy money bags and escaped from the bank as quickly as a flash. When they opened the back door of the bank, they saw a quirky, chubby man standing as straight as an arrow outside. He tried to stop them running away.

That peaceful man was Captain Underpants. He was the 122

man with the big tummy. His egg-shaped head was as bald as a coot. He was the man with the red cape and the large-size underpants. The two robbers laughed their heads off since they thought Captain Underpants was as silly as a clown.

‘Bee-boo, bee-boo…’ Suddenly, the police car appeared. The robbers had already run away like lightening. ‘Catching robbers is as easy as ABC! Look, the stupid robber is here!’ shouted a police officer. He pointed at Captain Underpants and snapped, ‘Do you think you can still be as free as a bird after you have stolen the money? Ha-ha!’ However, Captain Underpants just stood there and grinned and pretended nothing had happened. ‘He is a real superhero! Not a bad robber!’ yelled another police officer. He showed a poster to his stubborn partner. Some words were written on it: ‘A peaceful superhero has come to our town to catch the robbers from Frank’s bank, please find him.’

Finally, the police officer apologized to Captain Underpants embarrassingly. Then, he returned to the police car as fast as a hare. Captain Underpants felt extremely happy today because he saved the day!

Ming Gor is one of our Hong Kong heroes. He is the boss of Pei Ho Barbecue Restaurant who distributes meals to the poor and homeless people of Sham Shui Po. He has been working for the restaurant since 1983. He has started serving cheap meals since 2008.

He has many special experiences of running the restaurant. 123

His partners left him in 2000 so he needed to run it by himself. In 2004, he was put in jail because his partners hired illegal members of staff. However, he did not give up. After that, he understood that giving is better than getting.

Ming Gor helps the poor whole-heartedly. He has served cheap meals to the poor. He does all the good deeds by himself. He wants to spread the message of caring for other people in need which is an important value for the society.

Ming Gor has got recognition from the society and charities. Some people raise money for Ming Gor's restaurant so he has more money to cook free meals to the poor. Hopefully, other restaurants are inspired by Ming Gor and do the same good deeds as him.

Ming Gor is sympathetic and kind-hearted because he helps many poor people and never asks for anything in return. I have learnt that I should be considerate and compassionate to those in need. From Ming Gor, we can see that having a rich life is better than a rich wallet.

My dream job is to be a flight attendant because a flight attendant can go to different countries and learn lots of skills in communicating with other people. I like reading, looking at the view and doing some exciting things in my daily life so I want to challenge myself to be a flight attendant.

To be a flight attendant, I need to be smart because I need to answer customers’ questions. I also need to be diligent, 125

obedient, honest, kind, polite and talkative. I need to fulfill the requirements of being a flight attendant, like being over 165cm tall, not being afraid of heights and being patient.

Flight attendants have a lot of duties. For example, fulfilling the passenger’s requirements, serving passengers and making sure that everyone on the plane is safe.

If I want to be a flight attendant, I need to read more books about flying and customer service. Then, I need to train myself to be braver so that I will not be afraid when accidents happen.

I like talking with my friends to get to know them more. I like reading books to get more knowledge. I am clever, patient, talkative and creative. I think I have all the qualities of being a teacher so I want to be a teacher when I grow up.

If I become a teacher, I will teach students. I need to collect their schoolwork and help them to get the right answers. I need to meet their parents because I need to tell their mum or dad 126

about their grades and behavior. Moreover, I need to communicate with students to get to know what they need. I need to teach children how to collect their homework so that they can learn how to manage themselves.

If I want to be a good teacher, I will need to study hard. I will be very happy if I can be a good teacher.

I want to be a policeman when I grow up because I respect policemen very much. For example, Mr. Lau. They save people’s lives even on holidays.

‘My teacher and classmates say that I am energetic and obedient. Many people think policemen are just sitting in the office and writing reports but I don’t think so. Policemen need to go everywhere to save people’s lives and catch thieves. 127

Policemen need to listen to their commander’s orders and receive training every day.

Now I need to study hard and do more sports so that I can be the best policeman in the future.

My dream job is to be a tour-guide.

I want to be a tour-guide because I like traveling to different places. I’ve travelled to Canada, Japan and Australia. I also like looking at maps.

I am energetic and out-going. I like sight-seeing so I do it on my I-pad in my free time. 128

I think this is my talent because I have a good memory. I will not forget places even if I have only looked at them once.

Tour-guides need to be friendly and talkative so that they can make people happy and guide people to different places. They need to be well-organized because they have to prepare trips for different people. Some people like sight-seeing and some people like shopping and eating.

I will read more books about the world and join exchange programs organized by our school. I hope I can become a tour-guide one day.

Everyone has a dream job and I have one too! Ever since I can remember, I have been interested in words. As a small child, I always watched VCDs and DVDs, as well as films on the television. As I grew up, I was fortunate enough to have parents who are capable in English and they supported and pushed me to where I am now. Therefore, it has never been a hard decision to choose my dream job.

Although I am only 11 years old, I know in my heart, I will become an author in the future. At present, my hobbies include reading and writing, so I am constantly developing my knowledge and understanding the techniques of writing good stories.

I will become a famous author, and I know how I can achieve my goals. I need to be creative and also smart to write detective stories. I also need to be friendly and talkative so that I can share my ideas with other authors.

In order for me to reach the highest standards and to become successful, I must be creative to think of some special ideas to write the plot. Besides, correct use of grammar is also important. I need to proof-read my writing and try to make fewer mistakes and use accurate grammar. I should also be good at drawing so that I can add some pictures to make my stories more interesting and attractive. With illustrated pictures, readers can have a better understanding of the plot.

An author has many different duties. Primarily, I will have to write, but apart from writing, I must also do plenty of reading to learn from others. I also need to have meetings with illustrators, editors and also publishers in order to publish my books. Traveling could also broaden my horizon and through this, I could learn different cultures of other countries that can help my stories to be more meaningful and informative. The salary I 130

get can be my pocket money. I will save my money to publish my books.

I really hope that I can be an author that can write at any time and express my feelings and thoughts. I will work very hard to achieve my dream!

Bang! Whoosh! Boom! How interesting and amusing it was!

You are positively correct. I am going to tell you about my fascinating Chinese New Year holiday.

Going to the Flower Market is a must, especially to me, a going out lover. I went to the Flower Market in Tai Po with my 131

family and relatives. It was crowded so it also took us plenty of time to get into the Flower Market.

There were loads of shops which sold different plants and cute puppets representing the Year of the Horse and even children’s games stalls!

Pots of flowers were bought by my parents such as lily, tangerine and chrysanthemum. A huge horse puppet was bought by me. I also played a goldfish game and I won ten goldfish. Here were the instructions of the goldfish game. First, I paid twenty dollars to get five ‘spoons’ and a little bucket of water. Then, I used the ‘spoon’ to catch goldfish from a mini pool. At last, I chose to have the goldfish I caught or to have stationery for presents.

Other than going to the Flower Market, I also visited my relatives. I got lots of red packets. I also did some paper cutting with my cousins. We gave the paper cuttings to our granny as a present.

I truly had a fascinating Chinese New Year holiday. Chinese New Year is really amazing and fantastic. I am looking forward to the Flower Market in 2015.

What about you? Did you also have a fascinating Chinese New Year holiday?

A fairy lived in Little Red’s house happily. She wanted to have an interesting adventure so she followed Little Red all day. Little Red heard the phone ring so she picked up the phone and said, ‘How are you, Grandma? Is everything all right?’ ‘No’, replied Grandma, ‘I broke my leg and it is painful.’ Little Red put on her long, red coat and pulled her big, warm hood over her head because she decided to visit Grandma.

On the way to Grandma’s house, little Red’s picnic food 133

attracted a wolf. The wolf said, ‘Mmm…..what a delicious smell!’ The wolf followed the smell.

Also at this moment, a bad policeman heard that Little Red’s Grandma broke her leg so he wanted to visit her. He thought, ‘Oh, her granddaughter is beautiful. I must make Little Red marry me.’ The wolf and the fairy followed the smell and accidentally found out about the bad policeman’s plan.

They all told Little Red and Grandma. Little Red called the good guy to catch the bad guy.

In the end, the wolf and Little Red fell in love but the wolf was an animal and Little Red was a human. They felt sad.

Suddenly, the wolf turned into a prince. They didn’t know why until the fairy told them that it was because the wolf’s good behavior touched the fairy so she turned the wolf into a human. After that, they lived together happily ever after.

Last Sunday, Alice went to Little Red’s house. Alice said, ‘Help, help, help. My fashion designer, Snow White said she doesn’t want to design clothes for me! What can I do, Little Red?’ ‘Calm down, my sweet. I will take you to see my grandma. She knows everything. ‘Little Red said. ‘Remember, don’t walk into the forest.’ said Little Red’s Mum, Cinderella.

Alice wanted to see grandma quickly so she suggested, ‘Let’s walk past the forest.’ Little Red was an out-going girl so she 134

agreed to walk past the forest. When they were walking past the forest, they heard some strange sounds. They were very scared. Alice looked back and she saw a wolf! She shouted and Little Red saw the wolf too. They ran and ran until they got to Grandma’s house.

But the wolf followed them to Grandma’s house. At that important moment, Little Red’s elder brother Mike came too. He was a policeman but he wasn’t rude to the wolf.

He talked with the wolf and invited it to come in. Mike said ‘Wolf is a reporter. He just wanted to know more about Alice.’

So, there was nothing to be afraid of at all!

One day, Snow White and Little Red went to their grandma’s house because Snow White missed Grandma very much!

After they took some yummy cupcakes into their bag, they set off for Grandma’s home. On the way, they saw a strange face. ‘What’s that?’ asked Little Red. ‘I don’t know but it is very terrible’ said Snow White.

Meanwhile, the sisters felt that there was someone 135

following them. They tried to calm down. Little Red said to herself. ‘That was just a rabbit! Rabbit…’ And Snow White said, ‘Let’s go to Grandma’s house as fast as we can.’ Snow White’s lips were freezing. She felt scared!

Luckily, they saw a policeman. The policeman said, ‘What beautiful girls! I will do my best to protect you!’ The sisters were relieved.

Suddenly, they saw a very scary face. ‘A…’ the sisters said. ‘There…There’s a Wolf!’ The wolf said, ‘Please calm down, Snow White, I just want to ask you a question! I have a Dancing Party tonight. Can you be my partner?’ asked the wolf. ‘Of course, I’m…I’m free tonight!’ said Snow White. ‘But where is the policeman?’ asked Little Red. ‘He has run away.’ answered Snow White.

‘What a cowardly policeman.’ said Little Red.

In the end, Wolf and Snow White danced in Grandma’s house until the afternoon. Then Snow White changed her clothes. Wolf changed too but Little Red just sat in Grandma’s house watching TV and talking with Grandma.

Wolf and Snow White went to dance until midnight. ‘What a happy day we have had.’ said Snow White and the Wolf.

Dear Flora,

How are you? How was your exam result? I hope it was excellent.

Since I visited your home last Saturday, I found out that you have so many bad habits that you should change.

Here are the three main ones. First, you shouldn’t turn on the 137

air-con all day. This will waste a lot of energy because we use coal to make energy. If we burn coal, it will produce greenhouse gases. The gases are like a blanket around the Earth. They stop heat from escaping so our planet keeps getting hotter. This will make the ice melt at the South and North Poles so it causes flooding. You could turn on the fan and open the windows; second, you always drive your private car. This will make CO2 and carbon footprint. You could use public transport such as MTR, trains and minibuses.

I hope my advice can help you to change. Let’s protect our Earth by changing our bad habits! Please write soon!

Yours sincerely, Alma Leung

4th June, 2014 Dear Yoyo,

Hi! How are you? We have not seen each other for a period of time. I hope you are doing well.

Yesterday evening, I watched a TV programme which talked about protecting the environment. I have learnt some tips and I want to share them with you. 138

Summer is coming and the weather becomes hotter and hotter. Last time I visited you, I saw you leaving the air- conditioner on all day even when you were not at home! The air from the air- conditioner causes global warming. It makes the ice melt in the North and South Pole. The animals which live there such as polar bears and penguins will have no place to live, So you should switch off the air-conditioner before you go out.

Also, you threw away so much paper which was still useful. Paper is made from wood. People will cut more trees to make the paper. Then, animals which live in forests such as squirrels and raccoons will lose their homes. You should use both sides of paper and recycle them.

Every little bit helps; we can all make a difference! By changing the bad habits, you may help to save the Earth. You can also tell your family and friends to protect the Earth too!

Yours sincerely, Bobo Won

Dear Mr. Willy Wonka,

Hi! I am Charlie. I like eating chocolate very much but I am poor. I don’t have much money to buy your chocolate. One day, when I got a Golden ticket, I was extremely happy. I was so excited because I could not wait to meet you.

After I visited your chocolate factory, I knew more about it. I 139

Finally, thank you for giving me your factory. I am so glad to have my own chocolate factory. The most important is, thank you for giving me an unforgettable experience!

One day, my family went for a picnic at Tai Mo Shan. The weather was foggy. We were very happy about playing in the fog.

While my parents and my brother were taking photos, I went to see the scenery. Unluckily, I slipped down a slope and hurt my ankle. I cried for help but no one heard me.

After a while, my brother realized I had disappeared for a long time. He began to look for me. He found me on the slope 140

so he immediately pulled me up.

Finally, he told our parents and sent me to the hospital.

In this accident, I learned that we should not go to the countryside alone or nobody can help you when you are in trouble.

One day, I went into a toy shop. There were a lot of things to buy. I felt very excited about the toys. Then I ran away to see the toys by myself but my mum did not know that. After a few minutes, I wanted to find my mum but I couldn’t find her. I cried very loudly. Suddenly a sales person who knew English came and helped me.

At last, I found my mum at the cashier. I felt very scared before I found my mum. 141

My family and I went to Stanley Beach yesterday to swim and we had an awful experience there.

The sun was shining and I was playing card games with my family. All of a sudden, the red flag was hoisted by the lifeguard. Therefore we started to pack up as a red flag meant we were in danger.

While we were packing, the lifeguard was calling the people to stop swimming. However, no one listened because they played noisily. Suddenly, a man was in trouble and he called for help. The lifeguard realized that so he jumped into the water 142

and swam near him. However, the man was too heavy so the lifeguard could not bring him on to the land.

Splash! Splash! Dad jumped into the water suddenly. He swam near the man and saved the man with the lifeguard.

Finally, the man was saved by Dad and the lifeguard. Although we could not have a wonderful day there, Dad did something amazing.

One day, Daisy called me. She told me that she would be going to Europe for two weeks. She asked me for help because nobody could take care of her plant when she went to travel. I promised to help her and took her pot plant home.

I put it on the balcony because the plant needed sunlight. I kept watering the plant every day.

Unfortunately, when I was playing my favourite car racing game in the living room, my naughty cat bumped into the pot and broke the pot carelessly. I heard the noise so I looked at it. The pot was broken! I was very worried and frightened. I put 143

the plant into a plastic bag and went to the flower market as fast as I could.

I bought the same flower and took good care of that new plant. When Daisy came back to Hong Kong, I said sorry to her. Luckily, she forgave me.

By Jasper Dear Sarah,

How are you? Today, I am going to tell you my unusual experience on the MTR train this morning.

I went to school by MTR train as usual. The train was crowded. I could not get on the train easily at first but finally I could get in. After 10 minutes, the train announcement told us that the train was out of order and affected the air- conditioning. Everyone on the train felt hot and started complaining. Suddenly, a mother fainted and all the passengers were worried about her. I called an ambulance immediately. The ambulance arrived and took her to the hospital. The mother was rescued by doctors and 144

nurses at last and everybody praised me although I was late for school.

What about you? Anything special happen to you today? Write soon.

Dear Willy,

Hello! Did you read the newspaper? Our environmental problems are getting worse. We should take some actions to save our world.

People throw rubbish into the sea. It will pollute the habitats where the sea animals live. The animals will eat rubbish that we throw into the sea and they will become sick and even die. That is why we should not throw rubbish into the sea. We should 145

throw rubbish into the rubbish bin. We could also help to clear the beach.

People waste a lot of water when they are taking a bath or brushing their teeth. If we continue to waste water, people will not have any clean water in the future and the animals and plants on the Earth will all die. We should use less water by turning off the tap when we brush our teeth. We could also have a shower instead of a bath.

I hope our Earth will become better in the future because of our little help!

Yours sincerely, Marco

Review of Matilda

Matilda is a smart girl who can read famous fiction already at the age at four. She has magical powers; she can move things with her mind. Her parents have no patience with their children. They prefer watching television more than reading books. Her father sells second- hand cars illegally while her mother likes playing Bingo every day.

Matilda finally has a chance to go to school; she meets her enormous and cruel headmistress, Miss Trunchbull. Miss Trunchbull hates kids and she even throws small children out of 146

the window. Luckily, Matilda meets the kindest teacher, Miss Honey. Miss Honey teaches Matilda and cares about her. Therefore, Matilda helps Miss Honey to get back her doll and play tricks on Miss Trunchbull with her special powers. At last, Matilda’s parents run away and Matilda gets adopted by Miss Honey and they live happily ever after.

This book was suitable for people of all ages because it was positive and quite amusing. Besides, ‘Matilda’ was not just funny, I was moved to tears when Matilda was abused by her parents, and her teacher Miss Honey rescued her from that insane principal Miss Trunchbull. I was touched by those plots again and again. It was really fantastic!

My favourite character in ‘Matilda’ is Miss Honey because she treated her students gently and cared about Matilda a lot. She was also a brave girl as she had the courage to challenge Miss Trunchbull.

This film tells us two important messages. The first thing is that we need to read more books so that we can learn different knowledge. The second is we ought to be tough and never give up when we are facing difficulties.

I loved this film very much so I surely would recommend it to my family and friends!

My family and I went to Stanley Beach yesterday and it was a great day to go to the beach because it was a beautiful, sunny day. ‘When I was playing card games with my daddy and mummy, suddenly the lifeguard hoisted the red flag to warn people not to swim in the sea because a big storm was coming.

So we packed up our cards, food and drinks. We were ready to go back home. As some people were still swimming in the sea, they did not see the red flag and continued swimming.

Hence, the lifeguard went near the beach and shouted, ‘All visitors please go back to the land to keep safe!’ But suddenly the big wave came and washed away a man. He shouted, ‘Help! 148

Help! Please someone help me!’ And the lifeguard jumped into the water to rescue the man.

Fortunately, the man did not die and thanked the lifeguard a lot of times. Everyone clapped their hands and shouted, ‘Hurray! Hurray!’ Because of this, I want to be a lifeguard when I grow up so I can rescue a lot of people and make sure they are safe.
