The Mark of a Criminal Record1 Devah Pager Northwestern University With over 2 million individuals currently incarcerated, and over half a million prisoners released each year, the large and growing number of men being processed through the criminal justice system raises important questions about the consequences of this massive institutional intervention. This article focuses on the consequences of incarceration for the employment outcomes of black and white job seekers. The present study adopts an experimental audit approach—in which matched pairs of individuals applied for real entry-level jobs—to formally test the degree to which a criminal re- cord affects subsequent employment opportunities. The findings of this study reveal an important, and much underrecognized, mech- anism of stratification. A criminal record presents a major barrier to employment, with important implications for racial disparities. While stratification researchers typically focus on schools, labor markets, and the family as primary institutions affecting inequality, a new insti- tution has emerged as central to the sorting and stratifying of young and disadvantaged men: the criminal justice system. While unemployment rates declined for all groups in the 1990s, young black men remained twice as likely to be unemployed relative to whites of their age. Further, racial inequality in measures of joblessness—which include those who have exited the formal labor market altogether—widened substantially over this period among young black and white men.2 How can we explain these large and enduring inequalities in employment? Historically, research on racial inequality in employment strongly emphasized the role of labor market discrimination. In An American Dilemma, Gunnar Myrdal argues that “the concentration of unemployment upon the Negro people is explainable only as the direct and indirect effects of discrimination” (p.998; see also Pettigrew, 1975; Allport, 1958). Continuing in this tradition, more recent research has investigated the preferences and attitudes of employers as possible sources of persistent racial disparities in the labor market. -

Dear Colleagues, Some terms seem to be a lot less in vogue these days than just a few years ago (like ‘Grand Convergence’ or ‘Cosmopolitan moment’) whereas others are rapidly gaining momentum - say, 'Age of extinction' or ‘The Great Unraveling’. Against an increasingly dire planetary backdrop, the new WHO-UNICEF-Lancet Commission, A future for the world's children? comes not a day too soon, in other words. Let’s hope the SDG agenda gets a much needed shot in the arm “by placing children, aged 0–18 years, at the centre of the SDGs: at the heart of the concept of sustainability and our shared human endeavour.” The report repositions every aspect of child health through the lens of our rapidly changing climate and other existential threats. Which seems damned right. Back in the real world, however, quite a few billionaires still think they can promise to ‘Save the World’ while standing at the same time for a very harsh model of neoliberal globalization and economic system (which includes for them, more often than not, top-notch “tax optimization”). Jeff Bezos is no doubt one of the worst examples of this, but there are a few others as well, well versed in “tactical philantropy”, who think they can just buy the world (and elections). The prospect of a US presidential race between 2 oligarchs makes my stomach turn - and I’m being diplomatic here. -

First, this MA thesis evaluates the factors contributing to the rapid increase of CC initiatives. These factors include technology, personal economics, environmental concerns, and social interaction. Second, the thesis explores the prospects and limits of CC in terms of sustainability. The most promising prospect is that CC seems to generate social capital and initiate a value shift away from ownership. However, institutional forces promoting growth limit this potential. The thesis concludes that CC itself is not enough to achieve sustainability, and therefore, more political solutions are needed. The paper ends with a critical discussion on the future of our growth-based economic model by suggesting that certain forms of CC could represent the roots of a “post- growth” economy. ii PREFACE This thesis is original, unpublished, independent work by the author, S. 1 24 JEWISH INFLUENCE IN THE MASS MEDIA, Part II In 1985 Laurence Tisch, Chairman of the Board of New York University, former President of the Greater New York United Jewish Appeal, an active supporter of Israel, and a man of many other roles, started buying stock in the CBStelevision network through his company, the Loews Corporation. The Tisch family, worth an estimated 4 billion dollars, has major interests in hotels, an insurance company, Bulova, movie theatres, and Loliards, the nation's fourth largest tobacco company (Kent, Newport, True cigarettes). Brother Andrew Tisch has served as a Vice-President for the UJA-Federation, and as a member of the United Jewish Appeal national youth leadership cabinet, the American Jewish Committee, and the American Israel Political Action Committee, among other Jewish organizations. By September of 1986 Tisch's company owned 25% of the stock of CBS and he became the company's president. And Tisch -- now the most powerful man at CBS -- had strong feelings about television, Jews, and Israel. The CBS news department began to live in fear of being compromised by their boss -- overtly, or, more likely, by intimidation towards self-censorship -- concerning these issues. "There have been rumors in New York for years," says J. J. Goldberg, "that Tisch took over CBS in 1986 at least partly out of a desire to do something about media bias against Israel." [GOLDBERG, p. 297] The powerful President of a major American television network dare not publicize his own active bias in favor of another country, of course. That would look bad, going against the grain of the democratic traditions, free speech, and a presumed "fair" mass media. -
