The small con- vention was that we would have a cup of coffee and take a walk together every Sunday morning that we were both in town. The point was simply to give us some regular time to connect with each other— on sociology de- partment business, current events, research interests, family news, or what- ever else was on our minds. We have observed this convention with a constancy that even Kant might have admired. On most of the Sunday mornings since, rain, snow, or shine, you could have found us— fortified by coffee, usually accompanied by one of Wright’s succession of dogs, sometimes by a visiting colleague— strolling around Madison’s many lakes and woods, intent in conversation. During Madison’s long winters when the lakes freeze over, you could have found us strolling on them. This amuses visitors from warmer climes, and is tolerated by the ice fisherman we always find there first, camped in their solitary pursuit of quiet and cold fish. Early in the history of these walks, Rogers proposed that Wright con- sider joining him in teaching a large undergraduate lecture course on con- temporary American society that he had developed shortly after arriving in Madison in 1987. Wright, in Madison since 1976, had never taught such a course— not because of special aversion to undergraduates, but simply be- cause he was fully occupied with research and graduate students. But Rog- ers claimed he would enjoy the experience and learn from it. In the early 1990s, Wright finally gave it a try, and immediately realized that Rogers had been right. Teaching hundreds of undergraduates as a group was indeed fun, and the challenge of making complex and often controversial ideas ac- cessible to them did sharpen his own thinking, reminding him that teach- ing is the best way to learn. ix x Preface Since that time we have both taught this course, always jointly develop- ing the course’s content and a shared set of lecture notes that we revised together over time. We never used a textbook, but rather a collection of readings, revised each time the course was offered, that at least loosely cov- ered the topics of the lectures. The latter contained the real guts of the course. This way of handling the lectures and readings worked well enough but had two problems. Students often got a bit overwhelmed by processing both the lecture material and the loosely related readings. And the readings, because only loosely related, provided no real means of catch- up for stu- dents who might miss a key lecture, especially on a particularly complicated part of the argument in the course. Wright then suggested a natural solu- tion to this problem, which was to turn our lectures into a book. We or others could, of course, always supplement this book with additional mate- rials, but the book would ensure that the core of the course would always be available to students outside of lectures. We had no disagreements on course content, and we had gone over our detailed lecture notes time and again, so Wright thought this would be an easy task, taking only a few months of steady work. He was wrong. All the things that make a good book different from a good lecture meant that converting our notes to narrative took longer than expected. But we eventually got it done. Because Wright wound up doing the greater share of this conversion work, we put his name first on the book, but we regard it as fully a joint product from the two of us.

    The Mark of a Criminal Record1 Devah Pager Northwestern University With over 2 million individuals currently incarcerated, and over half a million prisoners released each year, the large and growing number of men being processed through the criminal justice system raises important questions about the consequences of this massive institutional intervention. This article focuses on the consequences of incarceration for the employment outcomes of black and white job seekers. The present study adopts an experimental audit approach—in which matched pairs of individuals applied for real entry-level jobs—to formally test the degree to which a criminal re- cord affects subsequent employment opportunities. The findings of this study reveal an important, and much underrecognized, mech- anism of stratification. A criminal record presents a major barrier to employment, with important implications for racial disparities. While stratification researchers typically focus on schools, labor markets, and the family as primary institutions affecting inequality, a new insti- tution has emerged as central to the sorting and stratifying of young and disadvantaged men: the criminal justice system. With over 2 million in- dividuals currently incarcerated, and over half a million prisoners released each year, the large and growing numbers of men being processed through the criminal justice system raises important questions about the conse- quences of this massive institutional intervention. While unemployment rates declined for all groups in the 1990s, young black men remained twice as likely to be unemployed relative to whites of their age. Further, racial inequality in measures of joblessness—which include those who have exited the formal labor market altogether—widened substantially over this period among young black and white men.2 How can we explain these large and enduring inequalities in employment? Historically, research on racial inequality in employment strongly emphasized the role of labor market discrimination. In An American Dilemma, Gunnar Myrdal argues that “the concentration of unemployment upon the Negro people is explainable only as the direct and indirect effects of discrimination” (p.998; see also Pettigrew, 1975; Allport, 1958). Continuing in this tradition, more recent research has investigated the preferences and attitudes of employers as possible sources of persistent racial disparities in the labor market.

Let’s hope the SDG agenda gets a much needed shot in the arm “by placing children, aged 0–18 years, at the centre of the SDGs: at the heart of the concept of sustainability and our shared human endeavour.” The report repositions every aspect of child health through the lens of our rapidly changing climate and other existential threats. Which seems damned right. Back in the real world, however, quite a few billionaires still think they can promise to ‘Save the World’ while standing at the same time for a very harsh model of neoliberal globalization and economic system (which includes for them, more often than not, top-notch “tax optimization”). Jeff Bezos is no doubt one of the worst examples of this, but there are a few others as well, well versed in “tactical philantropy”, who think they can just buy the world (and elections). The prospect of a US presidential race between 2 oligarchs makes my stomach turn - and I’m being diplomatic here.

First, this MA thesis evaluates the factors contributing to the rapid increase of CC initiatives. These factors include technology, personal economics, environmental concerns, and social interaction. Second, the thesis explores the prospects and limits of CC in terms of sustainability. The most promising prospect is that CC seems to generate social capital and initiate a value shift away from ownership. However, institutional forces promoting growth limit this potential. The thesis concludes that CC itself is not enough to achieve sustainability, and therefore, more political solutions are needed. The Tisch family, worth an estimated 4 billion dollars, has major interests in hotels, an insurance company, Bulova, movie theatres, and Loliards, the nation's fourth largest tobacco company (Kent, Newport, True cigarettes). Brother Andrew Tisch has served as a Vice-President for the UJA-Federation, and as a member of the United Jewish Appeal national youth leadership cabinet, the American Jewish Committee, and the American Israel Political Action Committee, among other Jewish organizations. By September of 1986 Tisch's company owned 25% of the stock of CBS and he became the company's president. And Tisch -- now the most powerful man at CBS -- had strong feelings about television, Jews, and Israel. The CBS news department began to live in fear of being compromised by their boss -- overtly, or, more likely, by intimidation towards self-censorship -- concerning these issues. "There have been rumors in New York for years," says J. J. Goldberg, "that Tisch took over CBS in 1986 at least partly out of a desire to do something about media bias against Israel." [GOLDBERG, p. 297] The powerful President of a major American television network dare not publicize his own active bias in favor of another country, of course. That would look bad, going against the grain of the democratic traditions, free speech, and a presumed "fair" mass media.
