Hunter College, 1999 M.A. Rollins College, 2003 A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of English in the College of Arts and Humanities at the University of Central Florida Orlando, Florida Spring Term 2010 Major Professor: Anthony Grajeda © 2010 Natalia Cherjovsky ii ABSTRACT In this fast-paced, globalized world, certain online sites represent a hybrid personal- public sphere–where like-minded people commune regardless of physical distance, time difference, or lack of synchronicity. Sites that feature chat rooms and forums can offer a deep- rooted sense of community and facilitate the forging of relationships and cultivation of ideologies. This dissertation investigates whether this trend is relevant to web sites concerning hip- hop. This genre is arguably one of the most pervasive and influential global cultural forms, yet it is markedly different from most other forms of globalized culture because it emerged within and is still embedded in a distinct subculture. The notion that the Internet could become a bastion for hip-hop fans is quite paradoxical: hip hop is a cultural form so deeply rooted in the sense of place and so invested in its relationship to spatiality that it could potentially pose a particular challenge to the notion of virtual communities. This research examines the virtual hip-hop experience in the UK in order to assess whether this music and the culture that surrounds it have been adopted in their original American form or whether they have been adapted to make them more relevant to their new locale. In particular, the study probes how the ideology, values, behaviors and attitudes that bestride American hip-hop are represented, consumed, and reproduced on the mediated world of web sites. iii This dissertation is dedicated to my parents, Silvio Cherjovsky and Graciela Cherjovsky, who raised me to be curious about the world and value knowledge and education.     TranscUlturAl, vol. 6.1 (2014), 70-83. http://ejournals.library.ualberta.ca/index.php/TC Conflicts of Interest, Culture Jamming and Subversive (S)ignifications: The High Fashion Logo as Locational Hip Hop Articulation Rebecca Halliday York University In the fall of 2012, an unheard of fashion label called “Conflict of Interest NYC” (C.O.I.) released three black and white, unisex t-shirts for sale online. Each t-shirt took the brand name and/or logo of a storied fashion house – Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta and Givenchy – and imposed a set of urban and sexualized representations and hip hop references to enact a high-end-low-end subversion of the brand’s connotations. The t-shirts came to public attention after Internet “street style” photographer Tommy Ton captured New York fashion editor Shiona Turini wearing a BALLINCIAGA t-shirt on the street at London Fashion Week and posted it on Condé Nast Media’s fashion bible Style.com. This article contextualizes the t-shirts within historical interactions between fashion and hip hop culture and reads the BALLINCIAGA t-shirt for its intertextual connections to hip hop and black oral tradition.1 In this sense, my analysis constitutes a “translation” of and between sets of cultural “codes” (Hall 21): in this instance, a translation of fashion brand names and subcultural references. Conflict of Interest’s t-shirts present a sophisticated incidence of culture jamming that parodies high fashion brands through hip hop references; it thus criticizes high fashion’s historical Eurocentric elitism and articulates urban conditions. While the t-shirts were not created as an explicit political protest, they are indeed subversive, and their creation and proliferation from within fashion illuminates the politics of fashion’s cultural appropriations and socioeconomic identities.

The data were slang terms taken from the lyrics of hip-hop/rap songs sung by four singers, two from the U.S.A and two from the U.K. A total of 105 slang terms were found, 45 of which belong to the people category and 16 to the drugs category in the American hip-hop/rap song lyrics, and in the British hip-hop/rap song lyrics, 26 of which belong to the people category and 18 to the drugs category. Bitch and nigga were found to be the most frequently used slang terms in the people category. In terms of semantic changes, broadening, amelioration, and narrowing were found, and in terms of associative patterns, effect, appearance, way of consuming, constituent, and container associative patterns were found. Although I personally trust a geezer off of Urban Dictionary more than an out of touch journalist or Good Morning Britain to define what grime is, I understand that Urban Dictionary may not be the most reliable source due to its liberal attitude to users uploading their own definitions with very little screening and that Mr Thake’s definition may also leave you with more questions than answers about what grime actually is and how it came to be.
