By COREY ARWOOD [email protected] Craft beer brewed in the heart of Lake City will soon flow from taps to pint glasses at restaurants throughout the area. The Halpatter crew gathered around a table in their crowded barroom Wednesday evening, and raised their glasses to achieving a long sought goal and making newfound business partners. “This makes us a real brewery,” Halpatter co-owner and managing partner Chris Candler said. They were inking the deal with their new distributors Wednesday afternoon, and had come with two pens to formal- ize the partnership. One read Halpatter Brewing Co., and the other bore the name of their first distribution company, Team Cone of Cone Distributing, with headquarters in Ocala and Tallahassee. OUR OPINION Tired of all the talk on taxes? e are too, especially since none of it takes on the only issue that matters, Was we see it: Can county government pay its debt service on the new jail without rais- ing property taxes or the sales tax? It’s certainly possible. A County Commission candidate was the first to point it out, and as folks dig into it, evidence continues to mount that we might be able to get by without any sort of increase — assuming the money we do have is managed prudently. Property values are rising and new business- es are knocking at the door. It certainly doesn’t look like the time to raise taxes. Besides, the job of government is not to accumulate wealth, but rather to accommodate those of its citizens who wish to do so and are willing to work for it. In other words, to get out of their way. We say, keep crunching the numbers and let’s see how the math plays out. There may be better news ahead than most of our elected officials think. As for the sales tax referendum, that was fatally flawed from the start. By CARL MCKINNEY [email protected] Candidates for local and state office will soon face off in the last big show- down before the August primary elec- tion. The 2018 Florida Gateway College political forum, a partnership between the Lake City Reporter, FGC and the Lake City-Columbia County Chamber of Commerce, kicks off at 7 p.m. Monday and continues at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The forum will be moderated by Lake City Reporter Editor Robert Bridges and hosted by FGC spokesper- son Mike McKee, who is also chamber president. “This is the big one for candidates,” Bridges said. “Everybody’s watching and everything’s on the line.” No relevant question is off limits, he said. The forum will be broadcast on Comcast Channel 8 and streamed on FGC’s website. The event has a long history at the college. “The college is proud to be able to host Candidate Forums from our television studios for the 30th year,” McKee wrote in a statement. “From a Chamber perspective, we are excited to bring this worthwhile election year program to the voters of Columbia County and beyond.” Starting off Monday’s proceed- ABOVE: District ings, County Commission District 4 County 2 candidates Rocky Ford, Marc Commission can- Kazmierski and Scott Thomason will didates Everett take the hot seat. His goal is that of countless other anglers — to get the fish to bite. “I like tying flies because of the challenge of matching some- thing where the fish think it’s a real piece of food and something to eat,” he said. Feathers, thread, buck tails, deer hair, different sized hooks, some in variety of finishes, are tools of Darlington’s fly-tying expertise. It usually only takes a few min- utes for him to make a fly and he makes all kinds of them. His flies include everything from a wooly worm (an imitation caterpillar) to popping bugs, worms, streamers, wet flies and dry flies. All designed to imitate food sources for fish. Most often, Darlington uses his flies in the Suwannee River to catch bass, bream and crap- pie. However, the lures have managed to snag a few other riv- er-dwelling fish including catfish and mud fish. The lures’ appeal is so great that they are also successful in tricking finicky saltwater fish. Since he grew up in the Tampa area, Darlington said his flies have also fooled a number of red fish, speckled trout, snook, lady fish, tarpon and several others. “It takes me anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes to make a fly,” he said. “I don’t like to do anything anymore complicated than that. At that point the fish don’t care.” Darlington admits that fly fish- ing is sort of unique for Florida and is practiced more often in TONY BRITT/Lake City Reporter other states.
