To our subscribers Having celebrated its 50th year, the review Notitiae is revising its periods of publication and rethinking the way in which it is communicated. It will keep unchanged its particular goal of offering information and documenta- tion on the liturgical-celebrative and disciplinary fields that are proper to the Dicastery as well as information about its activity. In 2015 two half-yearly volumes will be published which have the same number of pages as the vol- umes published in previous years. In 2016, howewer, Notitiae will become a solely online review made up of a single annual volume published in PDF format and freely downloadable from the website of the Congregation (there will be no need to renew your subscription for 2016). It will draw together the Acts of the Congregation, information and contributions on re liturgica that periodically appear on the Dicastery’s website, allowing you to cite the source. The review is simply changing its “clothes”, thus making itself more accessible everywhere. Libraries, archives, institutes, and all those who are interested can print it and collect it. It is planned to make the whole collection of Notitiae available online eventually.

SECULARISM AS A FALSIFICATION OF HOPE The interventions of the Pontifical magisterium at the beginning of the third millennium are characterized, among other things, by an insistent and ever more explicit appeal to Christian hope. In the Apostolic Exhortation Ecclesia in Europa the very structure of the document is built on the consideration of the present and the future of Europe from the perspective of that theological virtue. One of the passages that the Post-Synodal Exhortation dedicates to the diagnosis of the cultural and sociological situation of the old continent—which is indeed perfectly transferable to other geographic and human areas—describes with intense flourishes some of the symptoms of a marked “dimming of hope”: “by a kind of practical agnosticism and religious indifference whereby many Europeans give the impression of living without spiritual roots—somewhat like heirs who have squandered a patrimony entrusted to them by history. Many people are no longer able to integrate the Gospel message into their daily experience; living one's faith in Jesus becomes increasingly difficult in a social and cultural setting in which that faith is constantly challenged and threatened. In many social settings it is easier to identify oneself as an agnostic than as a believer.

Baby Jesus and the Universal Christian Church of the New Jerusalem in Gallinaro, Italy Magnus Lundberg [email protected] [Preliminary Version, July 2020] Introduction 3 Giuseppina Norcia and La Piccola Culla 6 The Official Church’s Reactions and the Movement’s Response 11 The Foundation of the New Jerusalem Church 17 Challenges and Controversies 22 Concluding Remarks: From Movement to Church 25 References 28 2 Introduction La Chiesa Cristiana Universale della Nuova Gerusalemme–The Universal Christian Church of the New Jerusalem–was founded on October 4, 2015. Three days later, the Assembly of the Faithful elected Samuele Morcia (b. 1972) Supreme Pontiff Samuele. The headquarters of the Church is located in the small town of Gallinaro in the Frosinone province, about 110 kilometres east of Rome. Of the nearly 2 500 church members most live in the neighbouring regions, but also other parts of Italy, particularly in Sicily, and to some extent abroad. The Universal Christian Church of the New Jerusalem considers itself to be the continuation of the One Holy Catholic Church. They claim that Pope Francis is no true pontiff, but a usurper who has created a new syncretic world religion that has nothing to do with Christianity. Like many similar cases, the New Jerusalem Church has a background in private revelations. Giuseppina Norcia (1940–2008), Samuele Morcia’s mother- in-law, claimed to receive visions and heavenly messages, both as a child and as an adult. After a series of revelations in 1974, she constructed a small chapel in Gallinaro, La Piccola Culla del Bambino Gesù–the Little Cradle of Baby Jesus– which soon became a popular pilgrimage site, where many people claimed to be healed.

  • Dominum Et Vivificantem
SUMMARY Year 2003 marks the 25th anniversary of Card. Karol Wojtyła’s appointment to Peter’s See. The present volume of the Ethos, entitled T he Ethos of the Pilgrim, is thought as an attempt to point to the most genuine aspect of this outstandingly prolific pontificate. This special attribute of John Paul II*s pontificate can be perceived in the fact that the Pope has construed his mission as that of a Pilgrim. Indeed, peregrination appears to constitute a special dimension of John Paul II’s service to humanity. Pilgrimages have been a most significant instrument of the Holy Father’s apostolic mission already sińce the start of the pontificate, beginning with the trip to Santo Domingo and Mexico in January 1979. Actually, the agenda of John Paul II’s pontificate, which was to become a Pilgrim one, was clearly outlined in the homily delivered by the Pope in Victory Sąuare in Warsaw on 2 June 1979. The Holy Father said then: “Once the Church has realized anew that being the People of God she participates in the mission of Christ, that she is the People that conducts this mission in history, that the Church is a «pilgrim» people, the Pope can no longer remain a prisoner in the Vatican. He has had no other choice, but to become, once again, pilgrim-Peter, just like St. Peter himself, who became a pilgrim from Antioch to Rome in order to bear witness to Christ and to sign it with his blood.” From the perspective of the last 25 years one can observe a perfect coherence that marks the implementation of this agenda.

  • Catholic Social Teaching Edited by Gerard V
Cambridge University Press 978-1-316-51360-6 — Catholic Social Teaching Edited by Gerard V. Bradley , E. Christian Brugger Frontmatter More Information catholic social teaching Catholic Social Teaching (CST) refers to the corpus of authoritative ecclesiastical teaching, usually in the form of papal encyclicals, on social matters, beginning with Pope Leo XIII’s Rerum Novarum (1891) and running through Pope Francis. CST is not a social science and its texts are not pragmatic primers for social activists. It is a normative exercise of Church teaching, a kind of comprehensive applied – although far from systematic – social moral theology. This volume is a scholarly engagement with this 130-year-old documentary tradition. Its twenty-three essays aim to provide a constructive, historically sophisticated, critical exegesis of all the major (and some of the minor) documents of CST. The volume’s appeal is not limited to Catholics, or even just to those who embrace, or who are seriously interested in, Christianity. Its appeal is to any scholar interested in the history or content of modern CST. Gerard V. Bradley is Professor of Law at the University of Notre Dame. He has been a Visiting Professor of Politics at Princeton University, a Fellow of the Hoover Institution at Stanford, and is currently a Senior Fellow of the Witherspoon Institute. At Notre Dame he is Co-Editor-in-Chief of The American Journal of Jurisprudence and serves as Co-Director of the Natural Law Institute. E. Christian Brugger is Professor of Moral Theology at St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in Boynton Beach, Florida. He is author of Capital Punishment and Roman Catholic Moral Tradition, 2nd ed.

PRINCIPLES OF THE NEW EVANGELIZATION: ANALYSIS AND DIRECTIONS By Richard M. Rymarz, B.Sc (Hons), M.Sc, M.Ed.Studies, Grad Dip Ed, Ed.D, M.A (Theol). A thesis submitted as full requirement for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Australian Catholic University. School of Theology Faculty of Philosophy and Theology Australian Catholic University Date of Submission: 25th of May 2010 University Research Services Office Melbourne Campus Locked Bag 4115 Fitzroy VIC 3065 1 STATEMENT OF AUTHORSHIP AND SOURCES This thesis contains no material published elsewhere or extracted in whole or in part from a thesis by which I have qualified for or been awarded another degree or diploma. No part of this thesis has been submitted towards the award of any other degree or diploma in any other tertiary institution. No other person’s work has been used without due acknowledgement in the main text of the thesis. Richard M. Rymarz 2 ABSTRACT This thesis, after appropriate analysis, proposes a number of principles, which guide both an understanding of the new evangelization as formulated by Pope John Paul II and how the new evangelization can be applied. The key insight of the new evangelization is that growing numbers of people, especially in Western countries such as Australia, whilst retaining what can be termed a “loose” form of Christian affiliation, can no longer be described as having a living sense of the Gospel. This makes these people distinct from the classical focus of missionary activity, namely, those who have never heard the Gospel proclaimed. Pope John Paul II’s exposition of the new evangelization arose from his understanding of key conciliar and post-conciliar documents.

The Holy See MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS JOHN PAUL II TO THE PARTICIPANTS IN THE CONGRESS OF CATHOLIC LAITY OF EASTERN EUROPE (Kyev, 8-12 October 2003) 1. I extend my greetings of peace to all of you – Cardinals, Venerable Brother Bishops, beloved priests, men and women religious, and lay faithful – who have gathered in Kyiv from different Countries, and not without sacrifice, in order to take part in the Congress of Catholic Laity of Eastern Europe. You have come to this meeting inspired by the same hope that sustains your Churches: Churches of heroes and martyrs, which amidst tribulations, and often to the point of shedding blood, have persevered in faithfulness to Christ the one Lord, in fidelity to the Catholic Church, in affirming the values of truth.A special word of greeting and thanks goes to Cardinals Lubomyr Husar and Marian Jaworski, without whose precious support this Congress could not have taken place. My gratitude goes also to the Church in the Ukraine — which the Lord allowed me to visit two years ago during the month of June, and of which the memories remain vividly etched in my mind — for agreeing to host such a significant event. I congratulate Cardinal James Stafford for this exciting initiative of the Pontifical Council for the Laity, which is a cause of great satisfaction for me.2. The harsh legacy of atheistic totalitarian regimes, which have left emptiness and deep scars on consciences, requires that the countries of Eastern Europe take up today the hard work of proceeding with religious, moral and civil reconstruction; of strengthening refound sovereignty, freedom and democracy; of mending the economy.

  • The Concept of Man's Salvation in the Thought of Saint John Paul II And
The Person and the Challenges Volume 8 (2018) Number 2, p. 29–55 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.15633/pch.2560 Maciej Bogdalczyk ORCID: https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4861-1161 The Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow, Poland The concept of man’s salvation in the thought of Saint John Paul II and Paul Tillich: similarities and differences Abstract The presented text aims to distinguish the understanding of the concept of salvation by two significant Christian scholars: John Paul II and Paul Tillich. They come from two separate Christian traditions: Catholicism and Lutheranism. The concept of salva- tion is so crucial that it is the essence of understanding Christianity and, if recognized as the goal of every human life, the effort of understanding it becomes even more impor- tant. An insight into the notion of salvation, based on the indication of similarities and differences in its understanding, makes it more comprehensible and accessible to every Christian. Keywords John Paul II, Paul Tillich, salvation of man, ecumenism, Luteranism. 1. The concept of salvation In Greek religion, hope and the concept of salvation were closely related to the philosophy of man, who was perceived with acute dualism: man consists of soul and body. In its essence and because of being intangible, the soul is divine, whereas the body, as a material medium, is a prison for the soul. Therefore, the idea of salvation in ancient philosophical and religious systems took the The Person and the Challenges 30 Volume 8 (2018) Number 2, p. 29–55 form of longing for the salvation of the human soul from the bonds of the material body and the visible world.
