From the Principal Mr John Finn Principal

I write to you on the International feast day of Our Lady Mt Carmel. This is a significant day in the life of the and the many communities throughout the world who share the story, ethos and passion for the Carmelite way.

Carmelite communities are characterised by a clear sense of welcome. Time is given to contemplation through both prayer and practical service; there needs to be a sense of just action, not mere words. This year is the 500th anniversary of the birth of St Teresa of Avila, one of the most prominent Saints in the Catholic lexicon. She had many wonderful writings and sayings but the one that I find most simple and effective is given below:

It speaks of being more willing to let things happen in God’s own time. This type of theme is used at our retreats with the boys. You will notice that the quote is contained within the banner of the Carmelite Centre of , based at Middle Park. You may wish to look up their website to see the extensive and diverse range of offerings from that group.

In relation to websites, the College has launched a new version of its own which went live on Monday of this week. Please take the time to view the site as it contains a more interactive interface and some useful information. We intend to expand on the use of this site to make our communication even more user friendly for parents and the community. Thank you to the College Development Team who spent a good deal of time with the set up and implementation.

I am delighted to announce that Joshu Faye-Chauhan (Year 12) has now reached the State final of the Plain English Speaking Awards. This is a significant achievement as he is only one of four from the hundreds who began. This final is being held on Friday. Joshu is one of many boys at the College who have chosen to hone their public speaking skills through taking on the challenge of competition.

At the end of last term the Year 12 students celebrated with their Formal. Congratulations to them all on the manner in which they presented. It is always encouraging to have young men know how to have fun and enjoy themselves whilst being both polite and aware of others.

In September of this year we have a number of groups who will be undertaking overseas experiences. One of these will be the Timor-Leste boys and staff who will journey to Hera and Zumalai. We look forward to hearing of the boy’s experiences when they return. Whitefriars is committed to supporting the work of the Carmelites in this developing country and are delighted to acknowledge the growing number of ordinations that are now evident.

We ourselves are the beneficiaries of such work in now having Fr Angelinho with us on staff. Two staff members have recently returned from Timor where they were offering English, Theology and Computer training. We are about to send a container of goods across to Timor. Details of how you may assist there are given later in this newsletter.

The College is currently preparing for a visitation from the Council of International Schools (CIS). Following our admission to membership we now move to the full accreditation phase which requires us to show we meet a stringent set of criteria in all areas of the College. We are also now in the process of looking at the next building phase for the College. It is our hope to begin building during 2016. I will be writing to all families shortly with a more fulsome description of both of the above areas.

We remember in our prayers the families of Matthew Spillman Year 10 Trinity and Andrea Sticca Year 7 Trinity who have both lost much loved Grandparents recently. May they rest in eternal peace.

College House Swimming Carnivals Dear Parents and Guardians, I am writing to remind you that the College’s Inter-House Swimming carnivals will be held next Friday 24 July, at the Nunawading Pool, just off Husband Road, Forest Hill (Melway reference: Map 62, F2). The Senior Carnival (for students in Years 10-12) will commence at 9am (please note that students must be there by 8.30am) and conclude at 11.30am. The Junior Carnival (for students in Years 7-9) will commence at 12.30pm (please note that students must be there by 12 noon) and conclude at 3.30pm. I am also writing to ask for your support in ensuring that your son is present on the day. The carnivals are, of course, an important part of the total curriculum of the College and as such attendance is compulsory for all students. Even if students are unable to participate in events they can assist staff with administrative tasks and, of course, their support for their fellow House students is always much appreciated. Any student not in attendance on the day will be asked to provide a letter signed by a parent explaining his absence. He will be required to present this note to his Pastoral Care teacher on Monday 27 July. Students who do not follow this procedure or who cannot satisfactorily explain their absence on the day will be required to attend the College on Saturday 8 August, between 9am and 12 noon. I would ask you, of course, to resist any inappropriate attempt by your son to enlist your support to avoid attendance at the carnival. Further details regarding College expectations of students and details regarding transport arrangements for the day will be given to students. Transport Arrangements Details regarding transport arrangements and chartered buses may be obtained by clicking on the link below. http://intranet.whitefriars.vic.edu.au/transport/SitePages/Swimming-Carnival.aspx If you have any enquiries regarding transport arrangements, please do not hesitate to contact Mr Frank Pospischil, Bus Coordinator at the College on 9872 8200. Finally, on behalf of the College may I extend to you a warm invitation to attend one (or both!) of the swimming carnivals. They are always, happy, noisy, spirited and colourful events, much enjoyed by all who attend. Regards, Mr Brad Bird, Deputy Principal (Students)

ICAS Digital Technologies Results

A number of science enrichment students last term competed in the inaugural ICAS Digital Technologies competition. The competition explored general computer skills drawn from a range of curriculum areas and focussing on a variety of computing contexts. I would like to acknowledge the boys from Years 7 to 10 who completed.

Of particular note was Jayden Bardrick, of Year 7, who scored in the 99 percentile of all Australian schools who competed and received the award of ‘High Distinction’ for his efforts – A fantastic result for Jayden. Notable mentions must also go to Ryan Mc Keown (Year 10) and Mitchell Guest (Year 8) who performed splendidly with the award of ‘Distinction’ for the competition. Results this year were exceptional and well exceeded expectation. A special note of thanks to Dr Stephen Goodall (Science Enrichment) and Mr Kristian Height (Learning Leader – Science) for organising and coordinating these enrichment offerings for our more able students.

English Enrichment - Years 9 and 10

On Wednesday 17 June, the Year 9 and 10 English Enrichment Group travelled to the Arts Centre Melbourne to watch the fabulous Melbourne Theatre Company production of Alfred Hitchcock’s “North by Northwest” in the Playhouse Theatre. It was everything that a theatrical production should be: thrilling, innovative and thought-provoking. From the moment we walked in, Alfred Hitchcock’s signature aura of suspense was in the air as the audience were on the edge of their seats for the whole show. The set design and projections were also fantastic and are a testament to the genius of the creative talent we have in Australian theatre. From the projections and sets, to the acting and suspenseful plot, “North by Northwest” is a true theatrical spectacle.

Many thanks to Mrs Lyn Power and Mr Ashley Payne for organising the event and to Mrs Power and Mrs Fitzsimons for accompanying us on the day!

Adam’s Journey to Timor-Leste Many of you will remember Adam Given (Mantua 6 Class of 2010). Adam has recently joined the Whitefriars ‘Expand your Horizons and make a difference’ program in Timor-Leste and has offered to keep us informed as to his progress while being immersed in the lives of the Timorese and working with the Carmelites for the next three months. We hope you enjoy his story so far. It is hard to believe that I have reached the 3 month mark of my trip. The last four weeks have gone incredibly fast, jammed packed with teaching and trips around the beautiful nation of Timor Leste.

Roughly 4 weeks ago, as a result of illness, I had to return to Dili for a consultation with a doctor. I travelled from Zumalai to Dili with Fr. Roque, a newly ordained priest who was sent to Zumalai to assist with services over the weekend. We stopped overnight in the beautiful town of Luana, staying with Fr. Roque’s family. Luana is located in the mountains and has a fantastic view of the surrounding countryside. The night started with a mass at 6pm. Nearly the entire village attended to hear Fr. Roque preach. Following this it was a very enjoyable and happy night filled with karaoke, singing and dancing! The locals enjoyed hearing a ‘malai’ (westerner) embarrassing them self in song!

Once I arrived in Dili time seemed to pass very quickly. After my visit with a doctor at the Stamford Medical Clinic, I spent my time helping Mrs Kate Swinfield teaching english to the novices in Hera. I specifically enjoyed helping some of the students with their essays on education, the very thing I am studying at university.

I returned to Zumalai a week later with Brother Antonio. I knew this was going to be the last time I headed to the small town! My last few weeks in Zumalai sped by in the blink of an eye. Antonio was kind enough to take me on several day trips to surrounding areas. We traveled to Maliana, a three hour drive from Zumalai. It was a beautiful town located in a basin near the mountains. Our mission was to visit some local school students the Carmelites were sponsoring. They were very nice boys who were grateful of the support they were receiving. I particularly enjoyed the drive as it gave me an opportunity to see how the locals live in rural villages. Some of the houses were made of mud walls and straw roofs! Other day trips included visits to Suai City and Ainero.

It was very sad when It finally came time to finish up my lessons and leave Zumalai to head back to Dili. Brother Antonio and the boys gave me a goodbye feast the night before my departure. It was a very enjoyable night filled with laughter and chatter. Antonio had invited the Sisters from Portugal and the Philippines. It was an international affair that night attended by Australians, Indonesians, Philippinos , East Timorese and Portuguese people. The next day it was time to say my final goodbye. These boys have been my friends and family for the last 3 months and I will definitely miss them.

When I had finally said my last goodbyes to the boys and Zumalai, Brother Antonio, Fr. Ansul and myself headed to Hautibillico. We had pre arranged to meet Fr. Bruce and 20 of the seminary students to climb Mt. Rameliau, East Timor’s highest mountain. The original plan was to sleep at a guest house/hotel on the Saturday night and begin the climb to the summit at 3am to arrive by 7am for Sunrise. However Brother Antonio changed the plan. According to him it would be better to climb at 6pm on the Saturday and then stay at a house near the peak of the mountain. This is what we did. We arrived at the house by 9pm. What followed was one of the coldest nights of my life. The wind was icy! The house was not fully enclosed and the wind tore through the house and up through the cracks in the floor boards. There was only enough blankets for 1 between 2 people, and these blankets were skin thin and insufficient to keep us warm. We lit a fire inside the house and huddled two to a blanket around the fire! No one slept a wink of sleep that night as it was too cold and uncomfortable! I have never been in a situation where so many people were so cold and miserable in one place at one time! It was like a scene from a survival movie in the snow. Eventually it came to 5.30am and we slowly shuffled outside to hold mass as the sun rose. It was a beautiful site. After this we proceeded up to the summit of the mountain to see the country from its highest point and to pray at the statue of Mary which is placed at the peak of the mountain. Mt. Rameliau is a very holy place for the East Timorese and it was a surreal experience to pray in the presence of Mary and East Timor. After completing the Rosary we headed back down the mountain.

I returned to Dili after the mountain climb. My last few days in Dili consisted of visiting some of the local sites such as Chenka prison, the Tais Market and the Taibuisse Market.

My time in East Timor has been enjoyable and unforgettable. The community in Zumalai welcomed me with open arms, and the students accepted me like one of their own friends. All of them display a strong desire to learn and study english. All of them show a deep appreciation for their education. I would like to thank all of the Carmelites in East Timor who have welcomed me with open and loving arms. Special mention must be given to Fr. Bruce and Brother Antonio who went out of their way to look after me. I would also like to thank Whitefriars College and Brother Sean for giving me this fantastic experience, it is one I will never forget. In a few days time I travel to Bali to have a holiday was some family. I do admit I’m looking forward to a hot shower! I am very excited to return home and share my stories with my friends, family and the Whitefriars community. East Timor and the Carmelites will be in my heart forever, and I can’t wait to return one day. Thank You.

In Fide Newsletter Issue 211 13 17 February July 2015 2015 Community Connections

Whitefriars College and St Anne’s Primary School, Park Orchards, recently joined forces to extend St Anne’s keenest Gr 5/6 readers and writers by completing a short unit on ‘Wolves, metaphor and mystery’. Using contemporary Australian author, Tristan Bancks’, new novel, Two Wolves, as their muse, the group explored the significance of the novel’s title and epigraph, as well as its connection to two iconic novels from years gone by: The Call of the Wild and My Side of the Mountain. We also had a lot of fun examining the conventions of mystery fiction and the role You Tube book trailers now play in attracting an audience and foreshadowing the concerns of the novel. Discussion of the novel’s complex themes, protagonist and antagonists was also a real highlight.

Like most keen English students, we then turned our attention to making sense of all of our discoveries and observations by writing an expository essay and using a super graphic organiser from Read, Write and Think to structure their first formal text response. It was lovely to see a group so enthusiastic about writing an essay!

Many thanks to Grade 5/6 students: Declan, Max, Nick, Xavier, Charlie, Bailey, Jack, Oran, Patrick, Alex, Josh, Molly, Emma, Martha, Jorja, Ashleigh, Gabriel and Hamish for their enthusiasm and great chats about their favourite books and characters. Discussing Harry Potter’s Creature Vaults was a real highlight! Thanks must also go to St Anne’s Deputy Principal, Katie Schroder, for the invitation to work with her students, assistance and encouragement.

Disappointed you missed out? Two Wolves has been shortlisted for the 2015 Children’s Book Council of Australia [CBCA] Book of the Year Award. If you’d like to watch its book trailer, click here. If you’d like to check out the presentation software we used to compile our findings on famous wolves in literature, try checking out this fun application: Story Scrapbook – a ‘transmedia story brainstorming tool’. Sounds amazing doesn’t it?

Lisieux Wrap up from Term 2 After what may seem as a long three month period for some, our first semester of schooling here at Whitefriars College has rapidly disappeared right before our very eyes, with Lisieux students particularly enjoying their 2015 year to date. Scarily and dauntingly for the Year 12 students, just under twelve weeks of school remain before our all-important examination period begins, with much study to be completed in-between!

Our Year 7 students enjoyed their first Grandparents Day program on 28 May, where they brought their loved ones through the gates of Whitefriars College and allowed their family members to get a true sense of what their grandsons are learning, studying and partaking in. A quick 20 minute tour around our school grounds had our special visitors fascinated and intrigued with all that Whitefriars College has to offer, which allowed for pleasant conversation with other grandparents from Lisieux and other houses, during the large spread of morning tea that followed. It was truly remarkable to see grandparents taking the time out of their busy schedules and we do hope that all involved thoroughly enjoyed their morning.

Aiming to exceed our $2000-plus cheque that we handed to our House Charity, The Reach Foundation at the start of the year, Lisieux students in 2015 were encouraged to contribute $20 of their own to enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime prize of going into the draw to win ‘The Ultimate St. Kilda Experience’, where two lucky students were granted the opportunity to go down into the St. Kilda Football Club change rooms during Round 19 where they will face the Fremantle Dockers. Close access with head coaches and players assures our two winners -Jakob Bongiorno Year 7and Andrew Ney Year 11, a truly fantastic experience; one which they will cherish. An enormous thank you to Alan Richardson, St Kilda Football Head Coach for supporting our House Charity and offering this opportunity.

Due to the incredible amount of money received from our very generous students, competitions of ‘The Dodgeball Competition’ and ‘The Chocolate Throw Competition’ were run for Lisieux’s enjoyment during Pastoral Care. Our boys were given the chance to win a free pizza lunch. After three days of knock-out rounds, Lisieux 1 won our 2015 Dodgeball Competition, led by their Pastoral Care Teacher in Mr Freeman and their stand-out star in Jackson Wright. Our second competition, ‘The Chocolate Throw Competition’ allowed students from all houses to win a block of chocolate by accurately and precisely aiming and then flicking any spare change that they had on to a block of chocolate. With many laughs had and lots of chocolate won, it was brilliant to see small amounts of money raised that will go a long way in all that ‘The Reach Foundation’ do.

Over the last two weeks of term, our Year 9s, 10s and 11s all sat their exams for their respective subjects in an effort to see what has been achieved over the course of the year. We give our congratulations to all of those students who were a part of their examination period over that time, and we do hope that all students receive the marks that they worked and studied hard for.

Finally, I would like to thank our Head of House Ms Hourigan, all Lisieux Pastoral Care staff and students for their hard work and persistence in all of their studies and collaboration throughout the term. I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable holiday break, and I hope to see all students back and fresh for the new term. To the Year 12 students, I hope you all enjoyed your time away from the books, keep the study up and remember, there are only 80,000 other VCE students in Victoria that may be studying when you aren’t!

Haemoglobin Heroes Mrs Penny Crossman

As at the end of last semester, 50 blood donors from Whitefriars had contributed blood for community use this year – that’s 150 people whose lives were actually saved or whose lives were greatly improved by our Haemoglobin Heroes. Now that is impressive!

Our most recent donors were

Hugh Cameron, Patrick Campbell, Tom Pleasance, Mr Nick May, Ms Jo Menzies, Ms Sue Scarmozzino and Mr Doug Wright.

Mr Jeremy Freeman also donated, and this time he donated plasma rather than whole blood – his blood was taken then put through a special machine that separates the plasma from the cells, keeping the plasma and returning the cells to the donor during the donation. Plasma from the whole blood donated by our students and staff can also be separated and used. It is made into 18 life-saving products that help patients with conditions such as burns, cancer, blood diseases, immune disorders and trauma injuries, and as such is at times referred to as ‘liquid gold’.

The red blood cells from whole blood donations go mainly to people with cancer and blood diseases, as well as people who have suffered traumatic accidents or burns, or who are undergoing surgery or childbirth.

Platelets are the third fraction separated from whole blood, and they play a crucial role in ensuring blood can clot – for example, in people undergoing high-dose chemotherapy, bone marrow transplantation, major surgery, liver disease or severe trauma.

White blood cells are part of the immune system and are not used.

Because the whole blood that our students donate can be separated into these three types of fractions – plasma, red blood cells and platelets – we can say that each donation saves three lives! However, these blood components have a short shelf-life – plasma can be frozen for up to a year but red blood cells only last 42 days and platelets five days, hence there is a constant need for blood donors. Each week the Australian Red Cross Blood Service needs 25,000 blood donations to meet patient needs.

To donate through the school, please email me; donors are needed for August, September and October.

Give blood. Give life.

Healesville Sanctuary Excursion for Year 7s

On Friday 19 June the Year 7 cohort visited Healesville Sanctuary. The excursion incorporated several Learning Areas such as Religious Education, Science, English and Visual Arts, as it integrated many units of work we have been completing at school in these subjects.

In Religion we have been studying Aboriginal dreamtime creation stories of the animals, such as the Platypus. It was interesting to see other Indigenous dreamtime stories embedded throughout the sanctuary. For Art we looked at aspects of the environment and animals. I chose to draw the Tasmanian Devil and the Platypus. For Science our task was to think and discuss how native Australian animals have adapted and evolved to suit the environment that they live. For English we had a guest speaker from the sanctuary tell us about indigenous culture, something that we will be looking at in more detail during term 3.

We participated in a lot of fun activities on the day including looking at dreamtime creation stories and different animals such as Tasmanian devils, Dingo’s, Kangaroo’s and many more. However my personal favourite activity on the day was the ‘Spirits of the Sky’ bird show. The birds flew over our heads and did funny and awesome tricks. Although it was fun, it was also a very educational experience and on behalf of the Year 7 cohort I would like to thank the teachers who organised the excursion, in particular Mrs Sue Scarmozzino.

2015 Science Captain Declan Gridley

G’day everyone, My name is Declan Gridley and I am the 2015 Whitefriars college science

captain. Over my years at Whitefriars I’ve grown to take great interest in science and the subjects offered, taking part in science enrichment, the science and engineering competition and science club; a great way for younger students to learn more about science. This year I am studying chemistry and physics and if possible hope to take these further next year by studying either science or engineering at university. Outside of science and my other studies I enjoy playing footy and hockey and also my music, being involved with the school band for some of my younger years. 2015 is an exciting year for science as it marks the year of ‘light’ and with science week fast approaching in term 3, many fun and practical activities will be available for students to enjoy and learn more about the world of light and how it works. I encourage everyone to get involved with this and everything science at Whitefriars Science & Engineering Competition: Declan has to offer for 2015. competing in the 2013 S & E Competition.

Belong. Believe. Become. Belong. Believe. Conor O’Farrell (8.3 Science) On Friday the 26th of June, our term literally ended with a “Bang!”, but not just one, quite a lot of them. In the days preceding the exciting launch days, year 8.3 students had been working efficiently and co-operatively to create a rocket. The rocket building process began with the designing and shaping of the rocket fins and the creation of a nose cone followed by the construction of a parachute that would hopefully deploy after its flight. After three or four science lessons of productive work, finally came the much-awaited launch day. You could feel the excitement in the air as we journeyed from our classroom to the launch area, the Bottom Football Oval. One by one, all the rockets were launched into the overcast sky, some flying slightly to the left, the right, almost perfectly vertically. Some rockets though unfortunately only managed to obtain a maximum height of five to ten metres off the ground. Some of the rockets also showed some great displays of aerodynamics, including many flips, turns and weaves. To conclude, this topic was very interesting and extremely enjoyable, and I thank all the people who contributed their time and effort to make this project one to remember for years to come. Year 7 Music Concert Congratulations to all of our Semester 1 Music students for their wonderful performances to parents and friends in the last week of Term 2. The concert featured 2 large classroom bands (Avila, Brandsma, Lisieux and Mantua) as well as the College Drum Line, Junior and Senior Bands and the Year 7 Enrichment Band.

It is always pleasing to see how far our Year 7 students have progressed in one Semester of Concert Band instruction and we hope that many of them will continue with their study of Instrumental Music.

Piano excursion Our annual Piano excursion will take place next Thursday 23 July. This year the boys will be travelling to Scotch College, Hawthorn, where they will participate in a demonstration and talk about the Concert Grand Piano and Pipe Organ. Buses will leave the College at 9am and return by 12pm. Permission forms are due back this Friday 17 July.

Senior Play Rehearsals are well underway for this year’s Senior Play – Louis Nowra’s ‘Cosi’. The story is set in a theatre on the grounds of a Melbourne mental institution in 1971 and features a host of characters from pyromaniac Doug to obsessive-compulsive Ross. The production features students from Years 10, 11 & 12 and promises to be a great night out.

Performances will be held on 6, 7 & 8 August at 7.30pm. Ticket prices are $15 adult and $10 concession and may be booked through TryBooking using the following link: http://www.trybooking.com/IKAE or http://www.trybooking.com/147372

Save the Date Our annual, sell-out and ever-popular Jazz Soiree is on again this year on 13 August featuring performances from a number of our ensembles along with a special guest.

Mr Gavin Kellar Sports Report Faculty Head - Sport

Senior Hockey:

“Wednesday commenced the Senior Hockey Teams season with a tough first match against Parade College. Whitefriars opened the scoring early within the first 10 minutes with a deflection past the keeper by Gil Hassall. Mukul Pendyala and Gabe Levacic exposed the Parade’s defensive lines on the wings feeding balls into the circle to Hassall who was consistently putting the ball into the back of the net finishing with 4 goals to himself at half time. Strong defence in the first half through Lionel Hunt and Declan Gridley held the Parade to just 1 goal in the first half leaving Whitefriars up 4-1 at half time. The second half started well for Whitefriars scoring early and settling with a 5-1 lead, Parade sparked a spirited flight back scoring 4 goals within 10 minutes bringing the score level to 5-5 with only 5 minutes remaining in the game. A turn over deep in defence by Munashe Chitima created a counter attack for Whitefriars which resulted in a short corner, which was then converted into a goal by Hayden Currie giving Whitefriars a 6-5 lead which was enough to secure a win. The Senior Hockey team face a grand final rematch against St. Bernard’s College which promises to be a cracking match.

Goal Scorers:Gilbert Hassall: 4; Hayden Currie: 2. Hayden Currie, Hockey Captain.

Finally, just a reminder that the House Swimming Carnival will be held next Friday 24 July at Aqualink Nunawading, Fraser Place, Forest Hill from 8.30am – 3.15pm. Spectators are more than welcome!
