Currants, strawberry, spice and a hint of toasted oak control the aroma. On the palate, the wine still has rich deep fruit. This ’98 Gemstone has aged very well. The flavors are well integrated and still focused on dark fruit flavors with bright acidity on the edges. It’s amazing how well this wine drinks right after opening the bottle. The final blend was 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petite Verdot.

M. Chapoutier Barbe Rac 90 120 424 Rhone Red Blends from Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rhone, France 2004 (3 bottles available) Chateauneuf du Pape Barbe Rac boasts a deep ruby/purple color as well as a nose of garrigue, licorice, kirsch liqueur, cassis, and new saddle leather. This superbly concentrated, full-bodied, multidimensional wine coats the palate with glycerin and sweet fruit. There is not a hard edge to be found, but wow, what intensity and length (the finish lasts for close to one minute). The 2004 should turn out to be a legendary effort capable of lasting 15-20 years.

M. Chapoutier Les Granits 70 90 425 Syrah, Saint-Joseph, Rhone, France 2004 (5 Bottles Available) Very deep garnet red, black fruit jam, smoked and mineral overtones. Smoky and peppered aromas. Tight tannins with a long persistency in mouth. According to the vintage, the wine can be kept from 30 to 60 years, indeed from 50 to 75 years.

Serious nose offers black cherry, black raspberry, menthol, licorice and flowers. Dense, sweet and powerful, with terrific intensity to the flavors of black raspberry, crushed blueberry and licorice. A backbone of firm, slightly minerally tannins runs throughout. Gaja, Barbaresco () 289 575 414 “Costa Russi”, Italy, 2000 (2 bottles available) Garnet color. In total harmony with a long complex finish. Layers upon layers of aromas on the nose and flavors on the palette. Rose petal, creme brulee, black tea, blueberry, blackberry, and a hint of vanilla on the nose. The palette is dynamic with multiple flavors transitioning smoothly from initial taste through a well developed mid-palette and into one of the longest finishes ever to be experienced. Fairly acidic with very soft, supple tannins and flavors of violet, black tea, brandy, maraschino cherry, and red currant. Out-right legendary and one of the finest versions of this wine to date

Gaja, Barolo (Nebbiolo) 289 575 415 “Conteisa”, Italy, 2000 (2 bottles available) Complex bouquet with good ripe fruits, luxurious oak and some lavas. Very juicy on the palate with red as well as black fruits and soft mature tannin. Truffles and more truffles. This wine is rich yet elegant with incredible finesse. Long finish. Just entering a time ready for consumption and so will benefit with decanting and swirling. Lots of air required. Another legend in the making in good time.

Gaja, Barolo (Nebbiolo) 289 575 416 “Sperss”, Italy, 2000 (4 bottles available) Cherries, tar, subtle notes of smoke, and flowers emerge in a very youthful, and inviting bouquet; on the palate this quite fresh, with a nice vibrancy to the fruit, and a rather long finish; there is nothing overdone about this, and whilst it is perhaps not the most traditional wine made in the region, it is also by far not the most excessive either. Very young and tight. Will benefit from continued cellaring or hours of decanting. The best it yet to come from a great wine from a great vintage.

Gaja, Estate Blend (Cabernet Sauvignon) 289 575 417 “Darmagi”, Italy, 2000 (2 bottles available) Both Parker and Tanzer underrated this wine. It is a medium bodied, garnet wine with a brick edge. The rich nose features licorice and vanilla. Wonderful black cherries, raspberry undertones, mushrooms, spice (but not black pepper), hints of green pepper and 20+ second finish. The long finish is rich with more of red fruits. Excellent balance and has become a nearly seamless wine. The wine is starting to show some age but is in the front half of its ideal drinking window. This is just stellar and is drinking very well at this point in time.

Gaja, Barbaresco (Nebbiolo) 299 599 418 “Sori Tildin”, Italy, 2000 (2 bottles available) Deep maroon core with a bright ruby rim. Wonderfully aromatic, very precise, elegant, mineral and transparent, leather, lovely touch of spicy oak, floral, earth, silk, carries its substantial tannins very well, amazing length. Intense nose of red flowers, crushed raspberries, strawberry coulis, bright bing cherry, and sandalwood. Second taste, the palate is rich and elegant with flavours of cherry skin, dark valrhona chocolate, red currant, and fine oak tannins. Such an elegantly textured and expressive wine. Really well built, showing little signs of age, but definitely can be enjoyed now. Needs early decanting and plenty of air. Best to open early over a long dinner. Gaja, Barbaresco (Nebbiolo) 299 599 419 “Sori San Lorenzo”, Italy, 2000 (4 bottles available) Despite its age, still almost bright purple in color. The nose on this is absolutely fantastic. Extremely floral and perfumed, with high-toned red cherry aromas followed by a deeper plum note. The palate is very deep and rich with plenty of fruity extract. Very concentrated. Silky smooth. There isn’t much oak detectable here (and what oak there is, is very well-integrated). This wine is still somewhat closed and begging for more time or plenty of decanting and air. Plenty of acidity as well, but the tannic structure seems to be fading away a bit. Delicious now, and despite some softening, will continue to grow for a many more years.

Clarendon Hills, Shiraz 295 625 423 “Astralis”, Australia, 2004 (2 Bottles Available) Classic and traditional Shiraz from one of three original “First Growth” Shiraz producers. Along with Penfolds “Grange” and Henschke “Hill of Grace”, this wine continues the traditional age-worthy reserved style of winemaking more comparable to the finest wines of the Rhone Valley of France. Opaque and dark like an Aussie shiraz, but very American Syrah nose - raw meat and beef blood, not the usual fruit bomb with vanilla, nice but unexpected. On the palate, it’s also a little more refined, almost elegant for an Aussie Shiraz. Incredible complexity and deep concentration while remaining elegant like Lafite shows the deft hand in the making of this wine. Blackberries, smoke, and cedar on the nose. Bramble fruit, tar, dates, and dark chocolate on the palate. Complex with a long, satisfying finish. A really nice wine for a special occasion or the perfect wine when First Growth Bordeaux quality is needed with a twist.
