  • CHAPTER I – Bloody Saturday………………………………………………………………
THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF JOURNALISM ITALIAN WHITE-COLLAR CRIME IN THE GLOBALIZATION ERA RICCARDO M. GHIA Spring 2010 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a baccalaureate degree in Journalism with honors in Journalism Reviewed and approved by Russell Frank Associate Professor Honors Adviser Thesis Supervisor Russ Eshleman Senior Lecturer Second Faculty Reader ABSTRACT At the beginning of the 2000s, three factories in Asti, a small Italian town, went broke and closed in quick succession. Hundreds of men were laid off. After some time, an investigation mounted by local prosecutors began to reveal what led to bankruptcy. A group of Italian and Spanish entrepreneurs organized a scheme to fraudulently bankrupt their own factories. Globalization made production more profitable where manpower and machinery are cheaper. A well-planned fraudulent bankruptcy would kill three birds with one stone: disposing of non- competitive facilities, fleecing creditors and sidestepping Italian labor laws. These managers hired a former labor union leader, Silvano Sordi, who is also a notorious “fixer.” According to the prosecutors, Sordi bribed prominent labor union leaders of the CGIL (Italian General Confederation of Labor), the major Italian labor union. My investigation shows that smaller, local scandals were part of a larger scheme that led to the divestments of relevant sectors of the Italian industry. Sordi also played a key role in many shady businesses – varying from awarding bogus university degrees to toxic waste trafficking. My research unveils an expanded, loose network that highlights the multiple connections between political, economic and criminal forces in the Italian system.

  • A Strange Story: When Crisis Leads to Wealth—The Institution of Champagne Wine As a Luxury Good
A Strange Story: When Crisis Leads to Wealth—The Institution of Champagne Wine as a Luxury Good Christian Barrère The very profitable Champagne industry now belongs to the luxury field; indeed, Champagne wine was the first example of a new mass luxury. However, the history of Champagne is special, because initially Champagne was not a good wine but only a standard one. It was one of the numerous white sparkling wines, and under the Champagne name, both the best and the worst could be found. By means of a unique historical process of creativity, the industry succeeded in transforming Champagne wine into a luxury good and in segmenting the old market into two strongly separated compartments, one for Champagne and one for all other sparkling wines. Moreover, this evolution resulted from a major crisis in the Champagne vineyards. On April 11, 1911, the red flag was flying over the vineyards and people were singing the “Internationale”; the vineyards were occupied by 40,000 soldiers. The crisis compelled the sector to evolve or perish. A small group of actors took the lead in the evolution process, creating a strategy based on high quality. This essay tells this success story and considers its conditions. The Champagne industry now belongs to the luxury field; indeed, Champagne wine was the first case of a new mass luxury. In the 1950s, 50 million bottles were sold, but today the number surpasses 322 million, of which 141 million bottles are exported. In addition, Champagne wine has a special position among white sparkling wines: the market for Champagne is a closed market, strongly separated from those for all the other sparkling wines.

  • BARBERA D'asti “Cà D’La Roca” D.O.C.G
BARBERA D'ASTI “Cà d’la Roca” D.O.C.G. General description: Barbera is one of the most characteristic grape varieties of the Piedmont region and comprises about 35% of the 53,000 hectares of the vineyards in the region. Originally from the Monferrato region, this grape variety is mainly grown in the provinces of Asti and Alessandria, with Barbera d'Asti being the most outstanding, certified DOC in 1970 and DOCG in 2008. Barbera d'Asti wine is closely linked to ancient farming traditions, yet it has renewed itself to meet different needs and tastes. Today, it is undoubtedly, and perhaps more than any other wine, a con- stantly evolving product, which grows following new know-how in the vine-growing and winemaking field. Due to its quality and the quantity produced, it meets the needs of an extensive range of curious and demanding customers. It can be fully considered one of the leading Italian red wines and increasingly receives international acclaim. BARBERA D'ASTI “Cà d’la Roca” D.O.C.G. Name: Barbera d'Asti DOCG. about 7/8 days. Women Winemakers in the Piemonte-Langhe: The “Curse” Upended Researched and Written by Professors Lucia and John Gilbert [email protected] Santa Clara University, Santa Clara, CA 2019 ***DO NOT CITE OR QUOTE WITHOUT ACKNOWLEDGING THE SOURCE*** View near Asti of vineyards, hillsides, and Alps Springtime in the Piemonte region is beauty personified. The landscape is a blanket of green, with hazelnut orchards in the valleys and vineyards that march up to the summits of the rolling hills, many of which are topped with tiny villages marked by roofs of red-clay tiles and church steeples. The majestic Italian Alps rear their high snow-capped peaks in the distance. We spent several weeks taking in the beauty of the region and visiting women winemakers in the Piemonte areas of Asti and Langhe, the latter a UNESCO World Heritage site that includes the Barolo, Dolcetto d’Alba, and Barbaresco d’Alba regions (see map at the right). Located in northern Italy just west of Milan, Piemonte ranks sixth largest in the country’s wine production and is well known for the high quality of its wines; it produces more DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) designated wine (Italy’s top wine classification) than any other region of the country. Its Barolo, Barbaresco, and Barbera wines, in particular, receive considerable worldwide attention. Over half the wines produced are exported to other countries. Map of the Langhe Region 1 Why We Visited We study women winemakers in major wine regions and what facilitates their success in the male-dominated field of winemaking.

  • Albo Vigneti 2007

  • The Province of Asti: the Territory and Its Economy the Province of Asti
The Province of Asti: the territory and its economy The province of Asti was established in 1935 by taking its 118 municipalities and separating them from the province of Alessandria. Situated between the provinces of Turin, Cuneo, Alessandria and Savona, its shape looks like a bunch of grapes, which seems to underline the typical crops of the territory, which is mainly hilly and spread over five agricultural areas • Upper Monferrato Asti hills • Middle Monferrato Asti • Belbo and Tiglione hills • Lower Bormida di Millesimo and Spigno hills • Tanaro Astigiano plain The business fabric is made up of approximately 27,000 enterprises, 12.8 for every 100 inhabitants, dominated by agriculture. Despite the small sizes of typical Asti enterprises and the highly competitive market, the local system shows no signs of weakening: industrial production continues its positive trends, handicraft enterprises are on the rise, agriculture is tending to specialise and consolidate, and commerce, mainly restaurants and hotels, is extremely lively as well. The general recession, which created a transfer in resources from industry to agriculture, together with a strong produce promotion policy, consolidating production activities and developing supplier activities, have all helped make the wine production in the Asti economy its strongest point fully backed up by the growth in exports. 35% of enterprises are in agriculture, 24% in manufacturing, 20% in commerce and the rest in services. The share of agricultural enterprises is much higher than the national average and that of northwest Italy as a whole. The sector is broken up into small enterprises, and over the last five years has begun a unification and consolidation process, with a high percentage of the agricultural land effectively used (70%).
