ADNOC Distribution Opens Al Dar Service Station in Sharjah Emirate Magazine issued by ADNOC Distribution, 7th issue (July - September) 2015. ADNOC Distribution Opens Al Dar Service Station in Sharjah Emirate OPENING LETTER FROM THE CEO Before we highlight ADNOC Distribution’s prominent achievements in the last quarter, we would like to extend our sincere greetings on the occasion of the Holy Month of Ramadan to the UAE President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, together with His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, Their Highnesses the Supreme Council members and Rulers of the Emirates, Their Highnesses the Crown Princes and Deputy Rulers of the Emirates, as well as to the people of the UAE and other Arab and Islamic nations. ADNOC Distribution continues to witness sustained growth across its operations and services as we make rapid headway with our expansion strategy on the UAE level. The acquisitions and asset transfer agreements that were inked and implemented serve as cornerstones of our expansion plans. We have previously highlighted the first phase of expansion that involved the successful acquisition of 75 service stations from Emarat in the Northern Emirates. This was followed by an asset transfer agreement with ENOC for the transfer and operation of 25 service stations in the emirate of Sharjah. As an early outcome, our team at ADNOC Distribution reached a significant milestone with the opening of the Al Dar service station, the first to be operated as part of this agreement. We are working with equal commitment to ensure the complete operation of all 25 service stations by early 2016, driven by our priorities to put the needs of our customers first and reduce the pressure during rush hours on motorists while providing convenient services to the public anywhere in the UAE. Our consistent record of achievements at ADNOC Distribution reflects the hard work and diligence of our people – our colleagues. Likewise, we suitably rewarded members of the team responsible for bringing in the success during the second quarter of 2015 across all sectors of our operations, from Aviation Operations, Services, Marketing and Health, to Safety, Security, Environment and Information Technology. We have been glad to see more and more colleagues being recognised at ADNOC Distribution with each passing year – this says much about the loyalty and ownership that we nurture. ADNOC Distribution is also not just about commercial achievements. Based on our role as a key player in the national economy, we are always keen to articulate and optimise our corporate social responsibility agenda, especially during the Holy Month of Ramadan. As part of this priority, this year we have launched a number of initiatives seeking to support charity works including the Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation’s ‘Iftar Project’ initiative. Every year during the Holy Month of Ramadan we invite motorists to stop at our service stations during the Al Maghreb prayers. The company’s service station staff distribute free dates and water as a gesture of goodwill to ensure motorists slow down rather than speed up to get to their destinations for Iftar. Looking ahead, I would like to reiterate that our high morale and efficient team work spirit remains the main driver for ADNOC Distribution’s success. Therefore, we are keen to further enhance these qualities during the next quarter and push the bar in terms of delivering high quality products and services that meet the needs of the UAE economic development. It focuses on topics such as globalisation, economic development, diversification of and challenges facing resource rich economies, trade relations between the Gulf States and major trading partners, energy trading, security and migration. The Programme primarily studies the six states that comprise the Gulf Cooperation Council – Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. However, it also adopts a more flexible and broader conception when the interests of research require that key regional and international actors, such as Yemen, Iraq, Iran, as well as its interconnections with Russia, China and India, be considered. The Programme is hosted in LSE’s interdisciplinary Centre for the Study of Global Governance, and led by Professor David Held, co- director of the Centre. It supports post-doctoral researchers and PhD students, develops academic networks between LSE and Gulf institutions, and hosts a regular Gulf seminar series at the LSE, as well as major biennial conferences in Kuwait and London. Planning Abu Dhabi: From Arish Village to a Global, Sustainable, Arab Capital City By Alamira Reem Bani Hashim A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in City and Regional Planning in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Elizabeth S. Macdonald, Chair Professor Michael Southworth Professor Greig Crysler Summer 2015 © Alamira Reem Bani Hashim Abstract Planning Abu Dhabi: From Arish Village to a Global, Sustainable Arab Capital City by Alamira Reem Bani Hashim Doctor of Philosophy in City and Regional Planning University of California, Berkeley Professor Elizabeth S. Macdonald, Chair The overarching objective of this research project is to explore and document the urban history of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It is organized as a comparative study of urban planning and design processes in Abu Dhabi during three major periods of the city’s development following the discovery of oil: (1) 1960-1966: Sheikh Shakhbut Bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s rule (2) 1966-2004: Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s rule; and (3) 2004-2013: Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s rule. The intention of this study is to go beyond a typical historical narrative of sleepy village-turned-metropolis, to compare and contrast the different visions of each ruler and his approach to development; to investigate the role and influence of a complex network of actors, including planning institutions, architects, developers, construction companies and various government agencies; to examine the emergence and use of comprehensive development plans and the policies and values underlying them; as well as to understand the decision-making processes and design philosophies informing urban planning, in relation to the political and economic context of each period.

Dr. Diana Boxer has been everything I could ever have wanted in a chair and a mentor. Her encouragement and good advice kept me going even while I was overseas and prospects of finishing seemed remote. I have greatly benefited from working with her and learning from her, and I cannot thank her enough for the time she has spent with me. I have the deepest professional and personal admiration for her. Dr. Aida Bamia was of invaluable help with the Arabic part of this dissertation, going far beyond the call of duty in her help with the transliteration and interpretation of the Arabic language data (although I take all responsibility for any incorrect information). I have also appreciated her friendship and our many wonderful conversations on Arab culture. I would like to give her my thanks for being so patient with my lack of knowledge of the Arabic language. I would like to thank Dr. Joaquim Camps for his help with the statistical part of this research.
