Serre, Ph.D.) Several epidemiological studies have confirmed the associations and estimated the risk of cardiovascular and pulmonary mortality due to short term exposure to PM10. However the errors introduced by techniques previously used to interpolate PM10 in characterizing the strength of the associations remain in question. Therefore we incorporate the Bayesian Maximum Entropy (BME) method of modern spatiotemporal Geostatistics in the exposure assessment to investigate the effect that daily PM10 has on cardiovascular and respiratory mortality in different regions of Thailand. The BME maps show that the PM10 field across Thailand exhibits considerable space/time variability. These maps suggest that the PM10 daily average concentration did not comply with the PM10 standard, which is supported by the maps of PM10 daily maximum concentration, and confirmed by BME maps of non-attainment areas. Furthermore, the BME analysis targeted districts in the Northeast region as sites where new monitoring stations should be added in order to improve the Thailand’s existing monitoring network. These maps provided the most accurate estimate of PM10 exposure obtained to date for each district location and day for which cardiovascular and respiratory mortality iii was reported in Thailand during 1998-2003. The strength of the associations was then investigated through an analysis using a case-crossover design. The observed associations were stronger for pulmonary mortality than for cardiovascular mortality. The high odds ratios observed in Bangkok and the central region were possibly due to industrialization, construction, and traffic emission sources while positive associations found in other regions could be related to sources from agricultural biomass burning, forest fire, wind- blown dust, and sea spray. Furthermore, a holistochastic human exposure analysis propagated mapping and epidemiologic uncertainty to obtain the lower-bound and upper-bound estimates of the number of deaths from cardiovascular and respiratory causes that resulted from acute health response to short term exposure to PM10 across Thailand. An Elasticity uncertainty analysis suggests that the uncertainty in the assessment of the number of deaths caused by PM10 can be improved by adding monitoring stations in the Northeastern region, and by improving the epidemiologic study in the Northern region. iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This dissertation could not have been written without the significant contributions of a number of people. I certify that this thesis contains no documents previously written or published by anyone except where due reference is referenced in the dissertation itself. i Abstract This thesis is a contribution to two bodies of scholarship: first, the historical understanding of the modernisation process in Siam, and in particular the role of sport in the gradual pacification of violent forms of behaviour; second, one of the central bodies of scholarship used to analyse sport sociologically, the work of Norbert Elias and Eric Dunning on sport and the civilising process. Previous studies of the emergence of a more civilised form of behaviour in modern Siam highlight the imitation of Western civilised conducts in political and sporting contexts, largely overlooking the continued role of violence in this change in Siamese behaviour from the pre- modern to modern periods. This thesis examines the historical evidence which shows that, from around the 1900s, Siamese elites engaged in deliberate projects to civilise prevalent non-elites’ aggressive conducts. This in turn has implications for the Eliasian understanding of sports and civilising process, which emphasises their unplanned development alongside political and economic changes in Europe, at the expense of grasping the deliberate interventions of the Siamese elites.

University of Hawai’i Press, Honolulu, 1997. This book, published fourteen years ago, explains the life of Thai tudong or forest monks in the twentieth century. In general it is an accomplished account of forest monasticism in the North-East, explaining well the lifestyle of the monks, and the many physical and psychological problems they faced while living deep in the jungle. Important aspects of the forest life covered include how the forest tradition came into existence in Thailand (Chapter 1), how Thai monks take up the forest lifestyle and deal with problems of fear, bodily su ering, sexual desire, hardships of wandering and so on (Chapters 2-6), the monks’ relationship with Sangha o cials and villagers, and the con icts they had with the Sangha administration (Chapter 10). In recent times tourists are getting highly influenced by the films and television programs in order to select their new place for travelling and this doesn’t happen with any tourism promotion strategies or campaigns but due to the films and television programs which show the images and videos of destinations. This concept can also be described as film-induced tourism in which the tourists choose destinations according to the attributes which they do see in films and television programs (Hudson & Ritchie, 2006). Gartner 1989; Echtner & Ritchie 1991) have also explained in this context images and sceneries in movies and TV programs play a very important role regarding the selection of place to visit and it helps in decision making process also. Chon 1990 in simpler ways explained that the more approving the image leads the higher chance of selecting the destination. Butler in 1990 also explained that films and television programs can impact on the travel inclination of those who reveal to the destinations characteristics and produce an affirmative destination image through their portrayal.
