This research discusses the translation strategies and translatability in translating an anthology of Korean and Malay short stories. The process of translation involves two different languages and cultures. The translation process does not only involve a process of transference between languages, but it is also a communication between two different cultures. Therefore, a translator who does not understand the life and culture of the society involved in the translation texts would make mistakes that lead to misunderstanding and offended certain people, providing information or aberrant testimony or completely false information, and even caused an unwanted effect. The first approach used is based on three scholars, Keesing (1958), Newmark (1988) and Katan (2012). The second approach used to analyze Malayathe data is based on Venuti's (1995) translation strategies namely domestication and foreignization. The researcher applied Newmark (1988) and Aixelá (1996) procedures.of The researcher used questionnnaires parsing the translatibility to explain the approach of domestication translation and foreignization translation. This research analyzed pertains the introduction of translation, literature approach, domestication translation strategy, translatibility and comparison outcome from source texts and target texts. In this research, the researcher found that domestication translation strategy are varied and not only bound to one approach. The choice of Korean and Malaysian domestication translation depends on the existence of domesticatedUniversity source language in the target language. This research will also contributes new knowledge to translators and also help the people involve in the translation industry. iv PENGHARGAAN Saya ingin mengambil kesempatan ini untuk merakamkan sekalung penghargaan dan terima kasih yang tidak terhingga kepada penyelia, iaitu Prof. Madya Dr. Puteri Roslina Abd Wahid yang telah banyak memberi tunjuk ajar dan bimbingan dengan penuh dedikasi. PRESS CONTACT: Zac T. Rose 415.581.3560 [email protected] ASIAN ART MUSEUM UNVEILS COUTURE KOREA First Major Exhibition of Korean Fashion in U.S. Showcases Traditional Styles Alongside Contemporary Designs, Highlighting Global Influence from Seoul to San Francisco San Francisco, October 5 — Couture Korea presents historic and contemporary fashion from Korea and beyond, exclusively at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco from November 3, 2017 to February 4, 2018. The result of a partnership between the Seoul-based Arumjigi Culture Keepers Foundation and the Asian Art Museum, this original exhibition introduces American audiences to the incomparable artistry and the living legacy of Korean dress. Couture Korea — whose title borrows from the French to convey Korea’s comparable tradition of exquisite, handcrafted tailoring — weaves together courtly costume from centuries past with the runways of today’s fashion capitals. The exhibition features more than 120 works, including a king’s ethereal robe, various 18th- century women’s ensembles and layers of silk undergarments, alongside contemporary clothing stitched from hardworking denim and even high-tech neoprene. Re-creations of Joseon dynasty (1392–1910) garments using handmade fabrics are juxtaposed with modern styles by celebrated Korean designers Jin Teok, Im Seonoc and Jung Misun as well as looks from Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld that were inspired by Korean artistic traditions. “Couture Korea elegantly interlaces the traditions of the past with contemporary clothing design to illuminate the ways Koreans — and fashion aficionados around the world — express themselves and their cultural affiliations through dress today,” explains exhibition curator and King Yeongjo's outer robe (dopo), 2015.

This interactive guide brings the traditions of Seollal straight to you through recipes, games, videos, and activities for you and your entire family to enjoy. About Korean Lunar New Year: The Lunar New Year, or Seollal is the most celebrated holiday in Korea. Seollal falls on the first day of the lunar calendar, which is usually towards the end of January or beginning of February. This year it falls on February 12th and marks the beginning of the Year of the Ox. While the Lunar New Year is observed across most of Asia, each country has its own way of celebrating. Korea has a unique set of customs and traditions. During Seollal, everyone celebrates for three days: the day before, the day of, and the day after. It is a time reserved for remembering ancestors, wearing hanbok, visiting family, eating traditional food, and playing fun games.

  • The Hangul Characters
The Korean language is classified as a member of the Ural-Altaic family (other members of this family include the Mongolian, Finnish, and Hungarian languages.) Until the early 1400s, most documents were written in classical Chinese characters (known in Korean as Hanja). As the idiographs are difficult to learn, only the educated people could read and write. King Sejong, the 4th ruler of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910), set up a special committee of scholars in 1443 to create a new writing system specifically suited to the Korean language. The result was Hangul (meaning 'the one script'). It originally contained 28 symbols, although 4 have dropped out of use. The alphabet has 10 vowels and 14 consonants. The consonants represent the simplified outlines of the parts of the mouth and tongue used to pronounce them. The vowels are associated with elements of the philosophy of the Book of Changes. In 1994, Discovery magazine described Hangul as the most logical language writing system in the world. The simplicity of Hangul led Korea to become one of the most literate countries in the world. U.S. novelist Pearl Buck said that Hangul is the simplest writing system in the world and likenedKing Sejong to Leonardo da Vinci. Even though Hangul is a system of phonetic symbols, it is categorized as new level of feature system, the first and the only in the world. On Oct. 1, 1997, UNESCO designated Hunminjeongeum as world archive property. Koreans commemorate the creation of Hangul each year on October 9. The Hangul Characters Before you begin learning the language, you should take some time to practice writing Hangul.

  • NORTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY the Evolution of Korean Costume
NORTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY The Evolution of Korean Costume: Urban Korean Women’s Shift From Traditional to Western Clothing in Colonial Korea, 1910-1945 A Capstone Submitted to the University Honors Program In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements of the Baccalaureate Degree With Honors Department Of History By Keeley E. Shoudel DeKalb, Illinois Fall 2019 HONORS CAPSTONE ABSTRACT This paper is about the fashion shift urban Korean women made from the traditional hanbok (한복) to Western-style clothing in the colonial period (1910-1945). In this paper, I argue that urban Korean women shifted their fashion from traditional hanbok (한복) to Western- style clothing because of American missionaries and internal social changes rather than influences from Japan. For this paper, I looked at translated primary sources as I do not read Korean. These sources include magazine articles, cartoons, pictures, interviews with Korean women who were in colonial Korea at some point in their life, and missionary books that were written about colonial Korea. In addition to these, I looked at secondary sources that dealt with Japanese influence, American missionaries, and internal social changes. This paper is significant because understanding a population’s fashion and the changes it undergoes can give us insight into their lives and how they felt about certain topics like religion, politics, and new ideas, which are all discussed in this paper. This paper also highlights the significance of learning about the history of women, a subject that is too many times dismissed, belittled, and ignored. 1 In 1910 the Joseon dynasty ended as Japan took control of Korea, still one country at this point in time, and made it a colony of the Japanese Empire that was expanding more and more.

  • Decolonial Possibilities of Transnationalism in Contemporary Zainichi Korean Art
Situations 12.1 (2019): 107–28 ISSN: 2288–7822 Decolonial Possibilities of Transnationalism in Contemporary Zainichi Korean Art Hiroki Yamamoto (The Hong Kong Polytechnic University) Abstract This study discusses the works created by three contemporary zainichi Korean artists—Oh Haji, Kum Soni, and Chong Ri Ae—after the 2000s. These artists have addressed the issue of zainichi Korean identity and the history of zainichi Koreans. This study also deals with two exhibition- making projects led by young zainichi Korean and Japanese artists in the 2010s: Zainichi Genzai Bijutsu and Totsuzen Me no Mae ga Hirakete. These exhibitions shed light on the presence of zainichi Korean art on the global art scene. Through these case studies, this article examines the different ways in which these artists embody the notion of transnationalism in their works and projects. By way of conclusion, this article points out three ways that the ethos of transnationalism articulated in the practices of zainichi Korean artists could contribute to the process of decolonization in the context of postcolonial Japan: first, it creates a new expression of ethnic identity by emphasizing the notion of hybridity in the place of homogeneity; second, it challenges the nationalized narratives of modern history by highlighting a form of transnational historicity; third, it promotes multiethnic dialogue on postcolonial issues by forging alternative platforms. Keywords: zainichi Koreans, contemporary art in Japan, transnationalism, decolonization 108 Hiroki Yamamoto Introduction This article examines the concept of transnationalism in relation to the works and projects of contemporary zainichi Korean artists to assess the possibilities it offers to push forward the work of decolonization.
