The central argument is that he employs place in many of his songs at lyrical and musical levels, and that this use of place as a poetic and aural device both defines and distinguishes his work. This argument is widely supported by Van Morrison scholars and critics. The main research question is: What are the ways that Van Morrison employs the concept of place to explore the wider themes of his writing across his career from 1965 onwards? This question was reached from a critical analysis of Van Morrison’s songs and recordings. A position was taken up in the study that the songwriter’s lyrics might be closely read and appreciated as song texts, and this reading could offer important insights into the scope of his life and work as a songwriter. The analysis is best described as an analytical and interpretive approach, involving a simultaneous reading and listening to each song and examining them as speech acts.

Sinds 1982 - ruim voor de geboorte van de huidige redactieleden - hebben studenten van diverse universiteiten in Nederland zich belangeloos ingezet voor Vooys. Dit jaar bestaat Vooys dertig jaar en dat vieren we uitgebreid met onze essaywedstrijd ‘Lof der Letteren’. We luiden deze jaargang officieel in met dit jubileumnummer en daarvoor hebben we verschillende oud-redacteuren en voormalige auteurs gevraagd om weer eens bij te dragen. Maar zoals altijd is er ook ruimte voor nieuw bloed. Voormalige hoofdredacteuren Willem Bongers-Dek, Jeroen Dera en Laurens Ham trakteren ons op een wel heel bijzondere terugblik. Geïnspireerd op hun briefwisseling ‘Jonge wolven’ in tijdschrift DW B maken zij de balans van dertig jaar Vooys op. Zonder gêne steken zij de loftrompet over ons blad, maar weten tegelijkertijd ook de onbeduidendheid ervan bloot te leggen. Koen Potgieter, amerikanist, neemt ons mee naar de gesegregeerde Verenigde Staten van de jaren twintig. Potgieter beschrijft hoe ‘zwarte’ Amerikanen zich destijds voordeden als blanken om te kunnen ontkomen aan de beperkingen die hen, vanwege hun afkomst, werden opgelegd. Deze tactiek werd passing for white genoemd. Het bijbehorende literaire genre, de zogenaamde passing novel, ontleedt hij aan de hand van twee contemporaine romans.
