1 Memorandum Ownership Status of Hotels and Other
MEMORANDUM OWNERSHIP STATUS OF HOTELS AND OTHER ACCOMODATION FACILITIES IN THE OCCUPIED PART OF THE REPUBLIC OF CYPRUS The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus hereby publishes a list1 of hotels situated in the Turkish occupied part of Cyprus. The majority of these hotels belong to Greek Cypriot displaced persons who were forced to leave their properties following the Turkish invasion of 1974 or have been built illegally on properties belonging to displaced Greek Cypriots, in violation of the latter’s property rights and without their consent. A number of hotels belong to Turkish Cypriots or have been built on land belonging to Turkish Cypriots. The European Court of Human Rights, in its Judgment of 18 December 1996, on the individual application of the Greek Cypriot displaced owner from Kyrenia, Mrs. Titina Loizidou, against Turkey, and in the Fourth Interstate Application of Cyprus against Turkey of 10 May 2001, upheld the rights of the refugees to their properties. In the Loizidou case, the Court ordered the Government of Turkey to compensate the applicant for the time period of deprivation of use of her property and to provide full access and allow peaceful enjoyment of her property in Kyrenia. The right of the displaced owners to their properties was reconfirmed in the decision of the European Court of Human Rights (Dec. 2005) regarding the application of Myra Xenides- Arestis v. Turkey, and has since been repeatedly reconfirmed in a multitude of cases brought by Greek Cypriot owners of property in the occupied part of Cyprus against Turkey]. It should also be reminded that, according to the United Nations Principles on Housing and Property Restitution for Refugees and Displaced Persons (the Pinheiro principles) “all refugees and displaced persons have the right to have restored to them any housing, land or property of which they were arbitrarily or unlawfully deprived..”. -

MORTUARY PRACTICES IN LC CYPRUS A Comparative Study Between Tombs at Hala Sultan Tekke and Other LC Bronze Age Sites in Cyprus Marcus Svensson Supervisor: Lovisa Brännstedt Master’s Thesis in Classical Archaeology and Ancient History Spring 2020 Department of Archaeology and Ancient History Lund University Abstract This thesis investigates differences and similarities in the funerary material of Late Bronze Age Cyprus in order to answer questions about a possible uniqueness of the pit/well tombs at the Late Bronze Age harbour city of Hala Sultan Tekke. The thesis also tries to explain why these features stand out as singular, compared to the more common chamber tomb, and the reason for their existence. The thesis concludes that although no direct match to the pit/well tombs can be found in Cyprus, there are features that might have had enough similarities to be categorised as such, but since the documentation methods of the time were too poor one cannot say for certain. The thesis also gives an explanation of why not more of these features appear in the funerary material in Cyprus, and the answer is simply that the pit/well tombs were not considered to be tombs but wells. Furthermore, direct parallels to the pit/well tombs can be found on mainland Greece, first and foremost at the south room of the North Megaron of the Cyclopean Terrace Building at Mycenae but also at the Athenian Agora. Michael, Matthias Kappler and Eftihios Gavriel 2009 Harrassowitz Verlag · Wiesbaden ISSN 0932-2728 ISBN 978-3-447-05899-5 The Vakf Institution in Ottoman Cyprus Netice Yıldız * Introduction: The legacy of Vakf in Cyprus The pious foundations, called vakf (Turkish: vakıf ) or evkaf (plural) in Cyprus were launched on 15 th September 1570 by converting the cathedral of the city into a mosque and laying it as the first pious foundation in the name of the Sultan followed by others soon after. Since then it has been one of the deep-rooted Ottoman institutions on the island to survive until today under the office of the Turkish Cypriot Vakf Administration (Kıbrıs Türk Vakıflar Đdaresi) (Fig. 1). Alongside its main mission to run all the religious affairs and maintain all religious buildings, it is one of the most important business enterprises in banking, farming and tourism sectors as well as the leading philanthropy organisation in the Turkish Cypriot society. Among its most important charity works is to provide support and service to people of low income status by allocating accommodation at rather low cost, or to give scholarships for young people, as it did in the past, using the income derived from the enterprises under its roof and rents collected from its estates. Besides this, the institution incorporates a mission dedicated to the preservation and restoration of the old vakf monuments in collaboration with the Department of Antiquities and Monuments. Another task of the vakf was to ensure the family properties to last from one generation to the others safely in accordance with the conditions of the deed of foundation determined by the original founder. -

As Special Rapporteur, I have been mandated to examine incidents that are incompatible with the provisions of the Declaration on the Elimination of All Forms of Intolerance and of Discrimination Based on Religion or Belief and to recommend remedial measures as appropriate. In this connection, my attention was drawn to an incident which took place on 25 December 2010, regarding worship by the Greek Orthodox Christian community in the villages of Rizokarpaso and Yialoussa. From Small States to Universalism in the Pre-Islamic Near East
REVOLUTIONIZING REVOLUTIONIZING Mark Altaweel and Andrea Squitieri and Andrea Mark Altaweel From Small States to Universalism in the Pre-Islamic Near East This book investigates the long-term continuity of large-scale states and empires, and its effect on the Near East’s social fabric, including the fundamental changes that occurred to major social institutions. Its geographical coverage spans, from east to west, modern- day Libya and Egypt to Central Asia, and from north to south, Anatolia to southern Arabia, incorporating modern-day Oman and Yemen. Its temporal coverage spans from the late eighth century BCE to the seventh century CE during the rise of Islam and collapse of the Sasanian Empire. The authors argue that the persistence of large states and empires starting in the eighth/ seventh centuries BCE, which continued for many centuries, led to new socio-political structures and institutions emerging in the Near East. The primary processes that enabled this emergence were large-scale and long-distance movements, or population migrations. These patterns of social developments are analysed under different aspects: settlement patterns, urban structure, material culture, trade, governance, language spread and religion, all pointing at population movement as the main catalyst for social change. History and Hybridity in the Trapeza Church Near Famagusta, Cyprus1
ALLAN LANGDALE Historian of Art and Architecture University of California at Santa Cruz History and Hybridity in the Trapeza Church near Famagusta, Cyprus1 I—Introduction The church at Trapeza has been largely neglected in the art historical literature on medieval and early modern Cyprus, garnering only occasional attention from scholars in the field.2 This is surprising because it is one of Cyprus's most intrigu- ing and challenging structures. Moreover, it contains a significant example of me- dieval Cypriot mural art that has gone largely unstudied: a fragmentary Pantocrator in the earlier of the two domes of the church, possibly dating from the fourteenth century. This extraordinary fresco, even if partially ruined, deserves to take its place among the masterworks of medieval Cypriot art. Perhaps one reason that the church's architectural features have been overlooked is that there has typically been greater consideration accorded those Cypriot churches that contain notewor- thy mural art, either in fresco or mosaic.3 If such pictorial remnants have justified ancillary discussions of architecture in earlier scholarship, then the revelation of the Trapeza Pantocrator supplies ample validation for a more comprehensive study of the church's architectural style and history. The Trapeza church is a fascinating conundrum and its somewhat ungainly hybridity may have dampened the enthusiasm of researchers of previous eras. Camille Enlart was so underwhelmed that he wrote only a cursory description of it.4 However, the syncretism that once affronted the aesthetic refinement of earlier 1. Speech of His Grace Bishop Porfyrios of Neapolis “Religious Freedom in the Republic of Cyprus” at the event: “Human Rights within the European Union” (05-12-2018). In July 1974, as many of you will know, Turkey invaded Cyprus with a large military force, taking advantage of the coup d’état carried out by the military junta in Greece against Archbishop Makarios III, the elected President of the Republic of Cyprus. On August 16, the fighting stopped but 43 years on, the wounds to body of the island have still not healed. Some 37% of its territory remains occupied by the Turkish army, which maintains a force of 40,000 soldiers there. In so doing, it has made Cyprus one of the most heavily militarised places in the world. Some 180,000 Greek Cypriots were expelled from their homes and properties. Today, around 500 remain enclaved in the Karpas peninsula and the Maronite villages. In November 1983, the occupation regime declared the independence of the so-called “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus”, in a move that was condemned by the United Nations Security Council. No other country, apart from Turkey, has recognised the illegal entity. As a result of the invasion, Christian monuments and those of other faiths, sacred and archaeological sites were desecrated, looted and destroyed. Everything that adorned the 575 Orthodox churches in the occupied areas was stolen. Some 20,000 holy icons, wall paintings, mosaics, gospels, sacred vessels, manuscripts, old books, iconostases and, generally speaking, anything that could be stolen for material gain was looted and sold abroad. -

Signed: 2 A BSTRACT Problem: Academic study of religious healing has recognised its symbolic aspects, but has tended to frame practice as ritual, knowledge as belief. In contrast, studies of scientific psychiatry recognise that discipline as grounded in intellectual tradition and naturalistic empiricism. This asymmetry can be addressed if: (a) psychiatry is recognised as a form of “religious healing”; (b) religious healing can be shown to have an intellectual tradition which, although not naturalistic, is grounded in experience. Such an analysis may help to reveal why globalisation has meant the worldwide spread not only of modern scientific medicine, but of religious healing. An especially useful form of religious healing to contrast with scientific medicine is Sufi healing as practised by the Naqshbandi-Haqqani order, which has become remarkable for its spread in the “West” and its adaptation to vernacular cultures. Research questions: (1) How is knowledge generated and transmitted in the Naqshbandi- Haqqani order? (2) How is healing understood and done in the Order? (3) How does the Order find a role in the modern world, and in the West in particular? Methods: Anthropological analysis of psychiatry as religious healing; review of previous studies of Sufi healing and the Naqshbandi-Haqqani order; ethnographic participant observation in the Naqshbandi-Haqqani order, with a special focus on healing. -

n Cyprus there are few if any private gardens that are open to the public, but most major towns have municipal gardens, which vary greatly from place I to place. Until very recently Cypriot gardens were mainly courtyards with a few herbs in pots and perhaps a grapevine or fig tree for shade during the long hot summer months. Latterly, with more and more Cypriots returning to their homeland from years spent in other countries where gardening is part of the culture, more adventurous plantings have been taking place and landscape gardeners are coming into their own, as people realise how therapeutic a garden can be after the rigours of work. In the valley where I live, amongst the courtyards and tiny planted strips around the houses, there are several gardens of note. In the village of Agia Anna in Larnaca District, there is a wonderful Cacti and Succulent Garden planted out on a rocky hillside. In the next village Psevdas, a garden lover has pruned the trees in his front garden into the most interesting shapes. In the same village two gardens on the main street have been landscaped in a modern style containing very old olive trees, which are such a part of the Cypriot landscape. My own garden in Mosfiloti has a lavender par terre, which has matured over the years. It no longer needs watering other than the rain which falls during the winter months, as the grey leaves protect the plants from the fierce-some sun. Many gardens are hidden away behind courtyard doors. If you are able to peek behind them, you will find some real jewels.
