NEW PLANT AND ACHIEVEMENT

Birla Corporation Limited (BCL) achieved several milestones to make its plants the benchmark in the cement industry:

 Installation of SNCR System: To reduce NOx level to comply with latest environmental norms by MoEF&CC, BCL has installed primary abatement system and Selective Non Catalytic Reduction (SNCR) system in pyro section well within the stipulated timeframe for both Satna and Chanderia units.

 Installation of Air Cooled Condenser in CPP : Looking to the social responsibility and sustainability development BCL has decided to reduce water consumption in captive thermal power plant. Accordingly, Air Cooled Condenser has been installed as replace of existing water cooled condenser and reduce water consumption substantially in condensation process (approx. 85-90%) in both Satna and Chanderia units.

 Usages of AFR : To reduce carbon footprint and reduce the use of fossil fuel, BCL is aimed at maximizing the possible utilization for available Alternative Fuel, from different hazardous and non- hazardous industrial & non-industrial waste, used tires, municipal waste and biomass (from agricultural waste, agroforestry, animal waste etc.) of varied composition and nature. In FY 2018-19, the group has successfully utilized more than 66,000 MT alternative fuel material which, in turn, has helped reduce the overall coal consumption of around 32,000 MT in the year.

 Efforts towards Sustainability - Adoption of New Technologies & Processes : Sustainable economic growth strategy of the BCL requires sustainable pathways i.e. changes in industrial processes, technology, in the type and amount of resources used, and in the products which are manufactured. BCL believes that it should move to a more energy-efficient regime, one that uses resources more responsibly and organizes industrial processes in ways that minimize and re-use wastes. These strategies play an important role in the BCL’s transition to low carbon economy. BCL believes sustainable technology and process should also be implemented and benefit the communities surrounding its operations. BCL’s efforts in this regard are briefly highlighted below :

1.0 Sustainable Technologies in Plant and Mines 1.1 Energy Sustainability 1.2 Sustainable mining technology 1.3 Sustainable water technology 2.0 Sustainable Technologies in surrounding community 2.1 Bio- gas Units 2.2 Solar lantern 2.3 Solar street lights 2.4 Rainwater harvesting

1.0 Energy Sustainability BCL has two-pronged Sustainability energy strategies to reduce Green House Gas Emissions 1. Supply side technology directed to generation of renewable energy and 2. Demand side technology directed to increasing the efficiency of energy use and recovery of waste energy

1.1 Supply side technology – Renewable energy BCL has started implementation of the project to harness solar energy at its factories. The capacity of solar panels installed is around 16.7 MW. The resulting reduction in GHG gases is around 16,700 Kg CO2

7 CEMENT | July 2019 MEMBERS ACTIVITIES

Few Photographs of Solar panels installed at BCL’s factories

1.2 Demand side technology – Waste Heat Recovery & Energy Efficiency The Waste Heat Recovery Technology of BCL uses the waste hot gases coming out of the pre-heater and clinker cooler to generate substantial power thereby reducing Green House Gas (GHG) emissions. The total installed capacity of waste heat recovery is 28.5 MW and 11 MW capacity is under installation. This will reduce around 40,000 Kg of CO2 emissions.

Other energy efficiency technologies implemented are Replacement of HPSV lamps with LED lights, Installation of VFD, Installation of capacitors in motors etc.

2.0 Sustainable Mining Technology BCL is adopting environmentally sound technologies in its mining operations. Which are listed below

2.1 Controlled blasting technique by using NONEL (nonelectric blast initiation) system, which creates less vibration and less air over pressure

2.2 Electric shovel for mining operation instead of diesel operated shovel, saving around 4,50,000 litres of HSD resulting in reduction of 11,70,000 Kg CO2

2.3. Efficient Drilling Machine i.e. fully automatic drill machine ROC D 50 instead of wagon drill machine Saving of HSD 22225 litres and 57,785 Kg of CO2

3.0 Sustainable Water Technology – Rain water Harvesting Water harvesting plays a decisive role in sustainable development. The technology adapted as per CGWA Guidelines. The rain water collected is sent to sand filter followed by harvesting in the bore well.
