The Reverend Dr. Otis Moss, Jr., Pastor Emeritus, Olivet Institutional Baptist Church, Cleveland, Ohio, was called to the ministry at the age of 17 during his days as a student at , , . He served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Morehouse from 1994-2005. His quest for knowledge and pursuit of educational excellence led him to Morehouse College as a Bachelor of Arts graduate and onward to the Morehouse’s School of Religion/Inter-Denominational Theological Center where he received the Master of Divinity degree. Dr. Moss selected a further course of Special Studies at the Inter-Denominational Theological Center and ultimately achieved his goal of the Doctor of Ministry Degree from United Theological Seminary in 1990.

During his early days as a minister, Dr. Moss was blessed to sit at the feet and within the inner circle of many phenomenal persons such as Benjamin E. Mays and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Both provided friendship, leadership, and spiritual guidance and helped to shape the thinking and model for leadership Dr. Moss represents today. He is recognized across the nation and globe as an eloquent spokesperson and spiritually grounded man of God, carrying the banner for love, justice, equality, and human rights for all.

As Dr. Moss so aptly states: “My decision to enter the ministry is a gift…a special calling from God.” His ministry is truly a gift; held up before the world as shining light for all to see. This gift was first discovered in his pastorates at several congregations in the LaGrange and Atlanta areas (including copastoring with Dr. Martin Luther King, Sr., at ), further developed at Mt. Zion (Cincinnati, Ohio), and reaching full fruition at the Olivet Institutional Baptist Church, Cleveland, Ohio.

Dr. Moss is married to Mrs. Edwina Moss and they are the proud parents of three children, Kevin, Daphne (deceased) and Otis III; the proud grandparents of five grandchildren, and great- grandparents of two great-grandchildren.

Beloved,

I want to share a message from one of our members, RC Riley, whose son, Ryan, was one of the recipients of the Rupert Graham, Sr. Scholarship. It is because of your contributions to our scholarship fund that we were able to award over $127,000 in scholarships this year! Thank you for your generosity and demonstrating what it means to “Live in the Key of (G)enerosity…”

If you know me well, you know that I love my church. Not the bricks and mortar, but the people and the purpose. Case in point:

Last Sunday, Trinity United Church of Christ held our annual scholarship and graduate recognition service. This is a special afternoon program where graduates from 8thgrade through doctoral programs, including certificate programs, are recognized for their pursuit of education, knowledge, and broadening their capacity to give to others. In addition, members are granted scholarships to aid in their endeavors - whether it be for culinary arts, music, general studies, etc. MY CHURCH, TRINITY UCC, awarded over $100,000 by way of over 34 different scholarships to our members!!! Scholarships even included 4-year awards for thousands of dollars.

As I sat in the pew, I cried with so much pride. Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian folk reached into their pockets and donated their personal finances as a resource for someone pursuing excellence. I am beyond proud to be a member of Trinity United Church of Christ. People have told me that my church is “Too Black,” “Does too much (during worship),” etc. Well, if Black folks helping Black folks succeed is “too Black,” that is where I wanna be!! My son was one of the scholarship recipients. What church do you know gives out scholarships to 8th grade graduates?!?!?! With this scholarship, I will be able to pay for his AP Geography summer program, honors English summer reading books, school fees, and his gym uniform, as well as additional out of pocket school expenses.

THANK YOU to: Trinity United Church of Christ Pastor Otis Moss III Pastor Emeritus Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. The Scholarship Committee The Membership Committee The Youth Usher Board (teaching my son to serve) The Children’s Church Ministry (my prayer warriors and support) Rev. Calvon Jones (keeping my son busy on Sundays) The Family of Rupert Graham, Sr. (giving selflessly so that my son and I may have... more abundantly)

My son and I appreciate you all more than you know! Thank you and God bless you!
