[Myanmar] Research Society Brief History of the Burma
Analytical Study on the Publications edited and published by the Burma [Myanmar] Research Society Ni Win Zaw Abstract The Burma Research Society (BRS) was founded on 29th. March 1910 and had a programmee to Publish, in printed book-form, important texts from Myanmar palm-leaf and parabike paper manuscripts. The BRS did most valuable work in carefully editing and publishing many old manuscripts texts. The famous Myanmar scholar Dr. Pe Maung Tin served as the BRS General Editor for its Text Program from the early 1920s to about 1940 when the Society had to cease its activities due to the Second World War. After Second World War U Wun (Min Thu Wun) and U Tin E made energetic efforts for the BRS. U Wun served asa the General Editor for the New Series. This Paper describes authors, editors, editions, printing presses, publishing dates, cover style, arrangements, physical descriptions, series numbers, appendixes, indexes, footnotes, and subjects of these books.And also it identifies the performance of editors who were prominent Myanmar and Pali scholars like Saya Lin, Saya Pwa, U Po Sein, BaganWundauk U Tin, U Lu Pe Win, U Chan Mya, U Wun, U Thein Han, and others. Moreover,abilities of ancient Myanmar authors and role of old Myanmar literature are investigated and expressed in this paper. Brief History of the Burma (Myanmar ) Research Society The Burma Research Society was founded on 29th. March 1910 at Bernard Free Library in Rangoon (Yangon) by J.S.Furnivall who was a member of the India Civil Service stationed in Myanmar together with some learned Myanmar officials like U May Oung.1After Opening the Rangoon (Yangon) University, the headquarter of the Society was located at the Rangoon University (Universities' Central Library), from about 1930-1980. -

-1- Nationalism by Design: The Politics of Dress in British Burma By Penny Edwards. IIAS Newsletter 46 (Winter 2008). Colonial attempts to hem in racial and gender difference through practice, law and lore made dress a potent field of resistance in British Burma, giving rise to new strands of nationalism by design. On 22 November 1921, a young male named Maung Ba Bwa was apprehended by police at the ShwedaGon PaGoda in RanGoon. MaunG Ba Bwa was one of an unusually hiGh number of Burmans visitinG the paGoda on this November evening for an exhibition of weaving, and a performance of a phwe (Burmese traditional theatre) by two leadinG artists. In MaunG Ba Bwa’s recollection of events, “his attire” had attracted police attention. “He was wearinG a pinni jacket and Yaw longyi, obviously rather self-consciously and in demonstration of his nationalist sympathies,” stated the resultant police report; “He seems, possibly not without reason, to think that some Government officers reGard such clothes with disapproval.” MaunG Ba Bwa was brouGht in for questioninG followinG the storminG of the ShwedaGon by British and Indian police, when Gurkhas “desecrated the paGoda by rushing up the steps with their boots on.” In the ensuinG fracas, which pitted monks aGainst such colonial aGents of ‘order,’ a Burmese civilian was killed. The scholar- official J. S. Furnivall, who presided over an independent commission of inquiry into the police response, would also pin his diaGnosis of Maung Ba Bwa’s political orientation on his wardrobe. His pinni jacket and his longyi, the commission reported, were proof positive of his “nationalist sentiment.”1 Wearing your politics on your sleeve By the early 1920s, in a climate where speakinG out or publishinG critiques of colonialism saw some younG monks and other activists jailed for years, increasinG numbers of Burmese civilians -- like MaunG Ba Bwa -- chose to express their political leaninGs in their dress. -

Jakarta is the capital city of Indonesia. 3. Timor-Leste is the newest country formed in Southeast Asia in 2002. Its capital city is Dili. 4. Hanoi is the capital city of Vietnam. 5. As the capital city of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur is an international business centre with modern transportation. It has buildings of different styles: Malay, Chinese, Indian, British and European. Kelantan has many beautiful beaches and is famous for Malay crafts like silver, kites and batik. Kedah has many rice fields and is near Thailand, so it shares some cultural traditions with Thailand. 6. The Mekong River is the “Mother of Rivers”. It is the longest river in Southeast Asia. It is 4,200 kilometers long and flows through 6 countries. It starts in China and crosses Myanmar, Lao, Thailand, Cambodia and then Vietnam. The Mekong River is important to the farmers, animals and plants in Southeast Asia. It remains us that we have many common lifestyles and cultures, and that we must co-operate with our neighbors. 7. Indonesia has over 17,000 islands and 250 million people. In Southeast Asia, it has the most number of different languages and cultures. In the past, Indonesia was ruled by Portugal, Holland, British and Japan. In religion and art, it has Hindu, Muslim, Christian and Buddhist influences. The national language is called Bahasa Indonesia. Indonesia hopes for “Unity in Diversity”, so that everyone can live in peace. -

INTERNATIONAL BURMA STUDIES CONFERENCE OCTOBER 5-7, 2012 NORTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY ______________________________________________ FRIDAY, OCTOBER 5 PANEL ONE: GLIMPSES OF MYANMAR’S VERY LONG HISTORY (1) REGENCY ROOM ______________________________________________ A LABYRINTH IMAGE IN THE MAHOSADHA JATAKA LILIAN HANDLIN In Pagan’s Mahanipata’s hierarchization, Mahosadha was superseded only by Vessantara, reflecting the narrative’s local resonance and importance, its placement enabled by the noncatenated rebirths serialization in Pagan’s revered materials. Mahosadha, usually associated with perfecting “wisdom” and “knowledge” was popular in Pagan and later, among other matters for its riddles whose existential expressivities informed centuries of legal theories. One scholarly riddle about Mahosadha’s Pagan take is visible in elaborate images of a labyrinth, illustrating the protagonist’s supernatural powers. Later settings elsewhere adapted the labyrinth to illustrate the setting for Vessantara’s exile. The image seeped into Pagan from the eastern Mediterranean, a proverbial drop in the bucket that was the immensely complex interaction between Buddhism and first the ancient world, and later Islam, currently vibrant subjects of scholarly inquiry. What was the significance of this enigmatic construct and what does it suggest about Pagan’s sense of imagination, a concept whose broader implications have recently be explicated in David Shulman’s brilliant More than Real, History of the Imagination in South India ( 2012). SADDHAMMASIRI AND HIS PHILOSOPHY OF LANGUAGE ALEIX RUIZ-FALQUES Saddhammasiri is a well-known grammarian and author from Pagan. It is likely he lived in the 13th/14th centuries A.D. According to Bode’s Pali Literature of Burma (p.20) ‘he was probably among the first to use Burmese as a literary instrument’. -

IMAGINED ASEAN IDENTITY IN THAI TELEVISION PROGRAMS Pitak Chumongkol A Dissertation Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Communication Arts and Innovation) The Graduate School of Communication Arts and Management Innovation National Institute of Development Administration 2017 ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation Imagined ASEAN Identity in Thai Television Programs Author Mr. Pitak Chumongkol Degree Doctor of Philosophy (Communication Arts and Innovation) Year 2017 This study was a qualitative research aimed to analyze the construction of ASEAN identity in Thai television programs and the decoding of ASEAN identity conveyed in Thai television program by the youth audience. Textual analysis of 6 television programs presenting social and cultural content about ASEAN during 2014- 2016, totaling 57 episodes, was conducted with in-depth interview with 25 students in the area of ASEAN Studies from 4 universities: Kasetsart, Thammasart, Chiangmai, and Walailuk. The following findings were found: All Thai television programs constructed ASEAN identity from the point of view of Thais. From analysis by narrative components: plot, character, conflict, scene, theme, special symbol, and point of view, five ASEAN identities were found: 1) harmonized ASEAN 2) united ASEAN amidst diversity 3) Hybrid ASEAN 4) ASEAN with past conflict 5) competing ASEAN. “Harmonized ASEAN” and “ United ASEAN amidst diversity” was found the most, and next was “Hybrid ASEAN.” All three identities conveyed positive relations between Thais and Neighbors. As for the decoding of the youth audience, the audience decoded with “preferred reading” more than “negotiated” and “oppositional” reading. “Hybrid ASEAN” was all decoded with preferred reading without any deconstruction. -

The British Academy and the École française d’Extrême-Orient brought together a group of distinguished experts from Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Australia and the UK, to consider these questions and promote the sharing of lessons among countries in the Southeast Asia region and beyond. This report summarises the outcomes of the discussion and puts forward a number of key messages, with a view to informing the ongoing Myanmar Comprehensive Education Sector Review process: • The best language policy choice for universities in Myanmar may not be either English or Burmese, but some combination of the two. • Language support in Burmese or in English should be extended to students who do not have sufficient language skills to cope adequately with the learning process. • Professional development training for lecturers aimed at improving teaching techniques is needed, including strategies for Burmese and English.
