    “Nearer, My God, to Thee” (Compiled by Paul R. Blake) Sarah Flower was born February 22, 1805 in Essex, England, the second daughter of Benjamin and Eliza Flowers. Sarah grew up in a home surrounded by poetry and song writing. Sarah married William Bridges Adams and moved to London where she attended the independent church begun by William Johnson Fox. She contributed thirteen hymns to his Hymns and Anthems, one of them being "Nearer, My God to Thee". This hymn was written to follow the preacher’s sermon on Genesis 28:11- 19, known as the story of Jacob's ladder, or Jacob's dream. Sarah wrote the hymn at her home "Sunnybank", in Loughton, Essex, England, in 1841 in a week, and her sister Eliza composed the tune. This short song written by the two Flower sisters for a small country church resonated with multitudes since then. The Confederate army band played this song as the survivors of the disastrous Pickett's Charge during the Battle of Gettysburg returned from their failed infantry assault. The Rough Riders sang the hymn at the burial of their slain comrades after the Battle of Las Guasimas during the Spanish American war. President William McKinley in September 1901 quoted as his dying words the first few lines of the hymn. In the afternoon of September 14, 1901, after five minutes of silence across the nation, numerous bands across the United States played the hymn, which was McKinley's favorite, in his memory. It was also played by the Marine Band on Pennsylvania Avenue during the funeral procession through Washington, and at the end of the funeral service itself, and at a memorial service for him in Westminster Abbey, London.

    n NEWS & VIEWS THE PLAQUE IS BACK! A historic relic honoring the brave musicians of the Titanic returns to Local 802 What was lost has been found. In 2010, Allegro published an article about a historic plaque commemorating the musicians who died on the Titanic. This plaque used to hang in Local 802’s former headquarters at Roseland Ballroom but was lost when we moved in 1982. Through a fantastic series of events, a law enforcement officer found this plaque (and another that we used to own) in a scrapyard in Florida. This officer, a man named Douglas Turner, read our Allegro article online and learned about the value of the plaques he had recovered. Local 802 attorney Harvey Mars eventually made contact with Mr. Turner and purchased both plaques. Harvey has donated them back to Local 802 and both are now hanging in the Local 802 lobby.     TheTitanic Titanic Provides Fascination To Fans of History, Antiques Jeanne Finstein and Judi Hendrickson, both Wheeling historians of note, will tell tales of heroism, cowardice, survival and loss originating from the most famous maritime disaster of all time. The duo will be sharing some memorabilia, including a neat postcard, shown in today’s column, that they came across at the Titanic Museum when they visited Pigeon Forge, Tenn. They will share books that they used in their research, including “Titanic Names, A Complete List of Passengers and Crew,” a book on the unsinkable Molly Brown, one on the ship’s captain, Edward J. Smith, a National Geographic and Smithsonian article. They also have a copy of a boarding pass and other Titanic props to shore up their tale of the luxury steamship that continues to be one of the most-researched and dramatized topics of all time. “We’ve done this presentation before but people keep asking for it again,” Finstein explained to me when I asked if this was a new production for them. “Judi and I plan to wear costumes that are the type of clothing worn at the time, in 1912.” It was April 15, 1912, when more than 1,500 people went to a watery grave in the North Atlantic. It was 1985 when her resting place was discovered off the coast of Newfoundland. Since then countless items have been sold, both authentic and otherwise, that are relics from the ship, its passengers or history. The famous violin, shown in the postcard, was played by Titanic bandleader Wallace Hartley as the ship sank.
