However whether, and to what extent, the very substantial taxonomic restructure presented in the book is accepted by the professional botanical community, only time will tell. In the meantime, while many orchid growers will enthusiastically embrace these new taxonomies, many others will exercise their valid right to continue labelling their orchids using the older taxa, waiting for the dust to settle on the scientific debate. In either regard there are difficulties for users of Jones's book, in their attempt to relate many of these new taxa to older species descriptors. The individual species entries in the text provide no prior taxonomic information whatever; and the index is of limited assistance, and far from complete regarding taxonomic descriptors commonly used over the past decade or so. -

E-mail: [email protected] The main phytogeographic regions within the eastern part of the Indochinese Peninsula are delimited on the basis of analysis of recent literature on geology, geomorphology and climatology of the region, as well as numerous recent literature information on phytogeography, flora and vegetation. The following six phytogeographic regions (at the rank of floristic province) are distinguished and outlined within eastern Indochina: Sikang-Yunnan Province, South Chinese Province, North Indochinese Province, Central Annamese Province, South Annamese Province and South Indochinese Province. Short descriptions of these floristic units are given along with analysis of their floristic relationships. Special floristic analysis and consideration are given to the Orchidaceae as the largest well-studied representative of the Indochinese flora. 1. However, to date, there is no comprehensive list of vas- cular epiphyte species. Here, we present EpiList 1.0, the first global list of vascular epiphytes based on standardized definitions and taxonomy. We include obligate epiphytes, facultative epiphytes, and hemiepiphytes, as the latter share the vulnerable epiphytic stage as juveniles. Based on 978 references, the checklist includes >31,000 species of 79 plant families. Species names were standardized against World Flora Online for seed plants and against the World Ferns database for lycophytes and ferns. In cases of species missing from these databases, we used other databases (mostly World Checklist of Selected Plant Families). For all species, author names and IDs for World Flora Online entries are provided to facilitate the alignment with other plant databases, and to avoid ambiguities. EpiList 1.0 will be a rich source for synthetic studies in ecology, biogeography, and evolutionary biology as it offers, for the first time, a species‐level overview over all currently known vascular epiphytes. At the same time, the list represents work in progress: species descriptions of epiphytic taxa are ongoing and published life form information in floristic inventories and trait and distribution databases is often incomplete and sometimes evenwrong. -

There is growing concern over the conservation of commercially-traded ornamental plants— notably the family Orchidaceae, trade in which is regulated under the Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species of Fauna and Flora (CITES). However, there is virtually no baseline data on their regional trade dynamics or conservation. Between May 2011 and June 2012, we interviewed plant harvesters, traders and middlemen (N=158), made market observations and conducted botanical surveys of Thailand’s four largest plant markets, at Jatujak Market (Bangkok), Chedi Sam Ong and Dan Singkorn Markets (Thailand-Myanmar border) and Mukdahan Market (Thailand-Lao PDR border). The multidisciplinary study provides initial baseline data on the ornamental plant trade, and leverages the case to explore broader themes, including wildlife farming, CITES implementation, and conservation rule-breaking. Surveys uncovered a previously undocumented regional trade dominated by Orchidaceae (87.5% of documented trade), including more than 82,000 orchid specimens of 347 species in 93 genera. -

Average - 25 metres above sea level. 6. Area: Approximately 57 hectares. 7. Overview: The Ramsar site includes a near-pristine system of seven watercourses, collectively known as “The Dales”. The site is located within the Christmas Island National Park and includes permanent and perennial streams, a significant number of permanent springs, and includes the majority of surface water on the Island. The presence of surface and subterranean karst features makes the site particularly important, being the first Australian Ramsar site to include such ecosystems. Numerous wetland types are represented in The Dales Ramsar site, which supports important populations of endemic, threatened and significant species including Tahitian Chestnut, Ribbon Fern, Christmas Island Hawk-owl, Christmas Island Brown Goshawk, Abbott’s Booby, Christmas Island Pipistrelle, Christmas Island Shrew, Christmas Island Gecko and the Christmas Island Blind Snake. The Dales are especially important for a number of terrestrial crab populations including Blue, Red and Robber crabs. 8. Treasure of the four kings Widyatmoko Treasure Of The Four Kings: plant expeditions to the Raja Ampat Islands of West Papua Didik Widyatmoko Center for Plant Conservation Bogor Botanic Gardens, Indonesian Institute of Sciences, Boor, Indonesia Abstract The Raja Ampat Islands is a group of four large islands and more than 600 smaller islands. The Islands and waters have been known as the most diverse ecosystems on Earth. Despite it being a biologically very rich area, little is known about the Islands’ plant diversity. In order to provide important baseline data for conserving the Islands’ biodiversity sustainably, an expedition team from Bogor Botanic Gardens had conducted floral collecting trips to Waigeo Island, Salawati Island and Sorong Nature Park. The aims of the expeditions were to collect priority plant species, particularly those of conservation value, and to describe their habitat characteristics in order to understand their ecological preferences for ex situ conservation purposes. The exploration and inventory methods used were a combination of random and purposive searchings. Different directions (aspects) were covered in order to comprehensively study the observed forest areas. A total of 719 plant records were collected from the three conservation areas; five species of which are endemic to Waigeo (Guioa waigeoensis, Alstonia beatricis, Calophyllum parvifolium, Schefflera apiculata and Nepenthes danseri) and all have been regarded as threatened by the IUCN. Sixty one of these species are endemic to New Guinea, while 100 species have been determined as new collections for the Indonesian Botanic Gardens. Dendrobium and Bulbophyllum were the most diverse orchids both on Waigeo and Salawati. Keywords Plant exploration, Raja Ampat Islands, Salawati Island, Waigeo Island.
