Dear Friends, Colleagues, and Spiva Library Supporters,

It’s been several years since our friend and colleague Art Saltzman passed away. You may recall that a memorial fund for library book purchases was established to honor his memory. To keep you informed, I offer this update of recent activity.

Each year the library purchases the winning publications for various literary awards that were meaningful to Art. The awards are the Man for Fiction, the National Book Critics Circle Award, the National Book Award, the Nobel Prize in Literature, the National Poetry Series Open Competition Award, the Pen/Faulkner Fiction Award, and the ALA Notable Books Award. Since establishing the Saltzman Memorial Fund, many titles that demonstrate literary excellence in the areas of fiction, non -fiction, and poetry have been added to the Spiva Library collection. This is tremendously helpful to the library and very beneficial to o ur students. A list of the most recent titles that have been added to our collection is enclosed.

The annual cost to purchase these award -winning titles is approximately $800. I encourage you to consider donating to the Saltzman Memorial Fund so that we m ay continue to honor Art’s memory by bringing valuable resources to the library. Information about how to contribute is enclosed.

Thank you for your interest in and ongoing support of the library! Sincerely,

Wendy McGrane Library Director

“I can ima gine no more prestigious populations than books and those who give them residence. My apologies to Shakespeare's Polonius, but in terms of the library, one should both a borrower and a lender be. In supporting the library, you support my sharper appetite s; in befriending the library, you not only become some of its most precious holdings, you leave a light on for me as well.”
