ATHLETES IN SONG AND STONE: VICTORY AND IDENTITY IN EPINICIAN AND EPIGRAM (Thesis format: Monograph) by Peter John Miller Graduate Program in Classical Studies A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies The University of Western Ontario London, Ontario, Canada © Peter John Miller 2014 Abstract Ethnicity, gender, and class define the ancient Olympic athlete; in contemporary sports too, identity is constantly asserted, negotiated, and contested across these socially contingent categories. The importance of difference and identity to the body of literature associated with the ancient Olympics – especially the epinicians of Pindar and the corpus of athletic epigrams found at Olympia – has not, however, been adequately recognized. Moreover, a holistic approach to athletic verse, in which epinician and epigram are conceptually united, is still lacking, despite the clear generic affinities of these different modes of poetry and their shared conceptual space. In order to fill this gap, my dissertation argues for a comprehensive approach to athletic verse, which is founded on my recognition of the centrality of the heraldic proclamation – the angelia – to epinician and epigram. Rather than accept a transparently preserved proclamation consisting of athlete’s name, father’s name, polis, age-category (if necessary), and event, I regard the use of the angelia in athletic verse as an appropriation of the efficacy of this powerful speech act; that is, epinician and epigram do not have their generic origin in the angelia per se, but in the modulation, modification, and representation of the proclamation. My recognition of the heraldic mode of representation at the core of athletic verse opens up these usually discretely categorized genres to a novel analysis based on their modulation of the identity of the victor. Fully engaged with theoretical work stressing the performative and socially contingent nature of gender, Marxist insights on class and ideology, anthropological and sociological analyses of ethnicity, as well as recent work highlighting the occasionality of ancient Greek poetic genres, I implicitly argue for the relevance of contemporary literary ii and cultural theory, while still prioritizing contextual realities in a historical approach to understanding the representation of athletes in the poetry of the ancient Greek world. The core of my project is a series of close readings of pairs of choral and inscribed poems (CEG 1.381, 1.383, 1.393, 2.820; P. O. 8, 9, 12); this unified method foregrounds the generic commonalities between choral and inscribed athletic poetry, but also points to the representative quality of the heraldic mode, and thus the centrality of identity and the process of identification – whether derived from supposedly essential political, sexual, or socioeconomic characteristics – to the praise of the athlete. iii Acknowledgements I would first like to acknowledge my supervisor, mentor, and friend Dr. Christopher G. Lykaion or in Crete on Mt. Ida. My soul is all in doubt, since debated is his birth. O Zeus, some say that you were born on the hills of Ida; others, O Zeus, say in Arcadia; did these or those, O Father lie? “Cretans are ever liars.” These two traditions relating to the birthplace of Zeus were clearly known in antiquity and have been transmitted to the modern day. It was one of the first matters that the village leaders in Ano Karyes brought to our attention when we arrived there in 2003. We came to discuss logistical support for our proposed project to initiate a new excavation and survey project at the nearby Sanctuary of Zeus. Situated high on the eastern slopes of Mt. Lykaion, Ano Karyes, with a winter population of 22, would become our base of operations, and the village leaders representing the Cultural Society of Ano Karyes would become our friends and collaborators in this endeavor. We were asked very directly if we could prove that Zeus was born on Mt. Lykaion. In addition, village leaders raised another historical matter related to the ancient reference by Pliny, a 1st century CE author, who wrote that the athletic festival at Mt.

    Rules and Regulations The ancient Olympics had the potential to be very dangerous, even deadly, and a strict set of rules were imposed to regulate the behavior of athletes. Rules also applied more broadly to the spectators and even the city-states themselves. Who Enforced the Rules? Judges, called the Hellanodikai, were selected from the citizens of Elis and given ten months’ training by Elian officials on how to oversee the games. Once trained, the Hellanodikai were responsible for sorting competitors into age categories, ensuring the Sacred Truce was upheld (see Section 6: Politics), supervising the training of athletes prior to the games, and enforcing the code of conduct for both spectators and athletes. The Hellanodikai had additional help with enforcement and Terracotta Skyphos (Deep Drinking Cup), Greek, Attic, ca. 500 BCE, Terracotta, 06.1021.49, New York City, Metropolitan Museum of Art punishment: mastigophoroi (whip- bearers), rabdouchoi (rod-bearers), and alytarches/alytai, responsible for crowd control. Rules for Athletes Athletes needed the permission of the Hellanodikai to participate in the Olympics. Only male citizens were eligible. If accepted, they spent ten months in training before the start of the games. Even then, their participation wasn’t guaranteed. Abstract The trumpet from the 5th century BC in ancient Greece, the salpinx, has been largely ignored in modern scholarship. My thesis begins with the origins and physical characteristics of the Greek trumpet, comparing trumpets from other ancient cultures. I then analyse the sounds made by the trumpet, and the emotions caused by these sounds, noting the growing sophistication of the language used by Greek authors. In particular, I highlight its distinctively Greek association with the human voice. I discuss the range of signals and instructions given by the trumpet on the battlefield, demonstrating a developing technical vocabulary in Greek historiography. In my final chapter, I examine the role of the trumpet in peacetime, playing its part in athletic competitions, sacrifice, ceremonies, entertainment and ritual.     Athletic Competitions The ancient Olympics originally had only one event, the stadion, a footrace that took roughly 30 seconds to complete. Over time, more events were added, transforming the games into a multi-day spectacle of athleticism. Some events, such as footraces, discus-throwing, and wrestling continue into the modern Olympics. Others, like the pankration and hoplite races, belong firmly to the ancient games. Events such as wrestling didn’t divide competitors into weight categories, but had separate competitions for boys and men. Equestrian Competitions Horse races, be it a single rider, a two-horse team, or a four-horse chariot, took place in the Hippodrome, an apsidal track located slightly south of the stadium. Horse races were the only opportunity women had for participating in the games: they were allowed to train horses to race at the Olympics, provided that they themselves weren’t the driver. Based on a thorough examination of the evidence, it argues that the two poets pursue different strategies: whereas Bacchylides develops a poetic mythology of named Muses (particularly, Ourania), Pindar rede- ploys the single unnamed Muse of the earlier hexameter and choral traditions, envisioning her as the poet’s collaborator. Pindar may thus be seen to originate the notion of the Muse as a deity associated with poetic composition, as contrasted with her mnemonic-epistemic role in hexameter verse. The epinikion is unique among Archaic Greek melic genres in that it is represented, for us, by two sizable contemporary corpora. In this regard, epinikion can be compared to Attic tragedy and the “Homeric” corpus of dactylic hexameter poetry; in the latter two cases, intensive comparative work has yielded profound insights into both the poetics of particular texts and, more generally, the evolution of the literary system in Ancient Greece. Much less work has been done on a contrastive poetics of epinikion.
