From the Group Director's Desk

Market volatility, rapid innovations, and geopolitical strife are fuelling a demand for business professionals who can think globally and compete strategically. The latest case in point being the demonetisation by the Government. The competitive realities of global competition and technological change have dramatically raised the bar on what takes to create and maintain a competitive advantage.

Navigating today's complex business world requires vision, confidence and strategies that give tangible business results. At WeSchool, our efforts have been towards nurturing our students not just as managers but as global citizen leaders; who look beyond themselves and contribute towards their organization & society as well. To this end, WeSchool has introduced the Global Citizen Leader program (GCL) in collaboration with Centre for Creative Leadership, USA. This has featured in the Stanford Social Innovation Review in February 2014 in the article titled “Educating a New Generation of Entrepreneurial Leaders”.

Leadership, Innovation & Design thinking are part of WeSchool's philosophical framework. Advisory Boards help us continually improve our curriculum and spawn new programs meeting specific needs of emerging markets and businesses. WeSchool's Innovation Board comprises of stalwarts like Dr. R. A. Mashelkar (Chairman, National Innovation Foundation), Mr. Harsh Mariwala (Chairman & Managing Director, Marico), Mr. Kishore Biyani (Group CEO, Future Group), Mr. Rana Kapoor (Founder, Managing Director & CEO, Yes Bank), Mr. Dan Buchner (VP, Peter Lougheed Leadership Institute, The Banff Centre, Canada), Mr. Srini Srinivasan (CEO of LUMIUM and member of prestigious Executive Board of ICSID), and Prof. Dr. Ramesh Raskar (Associate Professor, MIT Media Lab), to name a few.

Along with its partners, WeSchool has undertaken several path breaking initiatives like Med4Dev -Israel Affordable Healthcare Hackathon with Pears Program for Global Innovation, MIT Media Lab-WeSchool Design Innovation Workshop, InterDesign Workshop with International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID), India Sweden Innovation Accelerator (ISIA) -a platform for Swedish companies to work with academia to develop business strategies relevant to Indian markets, ReDx 2015 - MIT Media Lab's Health Technology Camp took potential high impact ideas/solutions sourced from health researchers & doctors to address critical healthcare issues in India & Kumbhathon in Nashik with MIT and TCS which combines identification of challenges, discussions with stakeholders, prototyping and customer analysis for multiple corporate and entrepreneurial ventures.

As part of WeSchool's core value of 'We Link and Care' and keeping in mind our responsibility towards our nation and to give back to the local ecosystem; WeSchool along with partner institutes of Ruia & Podar College have adopted the ' Matunga' railway station.

Students' global & rural exposures and opportunity to engage in several projects and initiatives such as D-Magics, GRLI, SIFE, Udaan and Munijan have sensitized them to their role as an individual to make a difference to the organization they would be working for. WeSchool's association with several leading International Universities has ensured student & faculty exchange and internship programs.

Over the course of the program, your fellow students become trusted colleagues and in many cases, lifelong friends. I invite you to embark on your path to academic and professional excellence with us at our sprawling campuses in Mumbai and Bengaluru which will truly enhance your intellectual and personal growth. We promise to equip you with inventive techniques and tools which will transform you into Global Citizen Leaders in organizations of today and tomorrow.

Corporate interface: Rural Roundtable Conference – 'Rural Inc.’

'AuRuM' - A rural theme based Roundtable conference in partnership with the industry is being organized every year by the core team of Rural management at WeSchool. The latest concept introduced by the Rural team was “Rural Inc.” which is a virtual organization connecting all stakeholders in the Rural space for mutual benefits. This was very well received by the industry and the discussions led to several challenge statements and projects which were aimed at enhancing the rural sector. These projects were then assigned to students of rural management to work upon, under the GCL program. Industry experts offered mentorship to them. Some of the projects have received attention for a long term mentorship from industries.

Research and innovation through GCL - Global Citizen Leadership programme

WeSchool has partnered with Leadership Beyond Boundaries (LBB), a global initiative by the Centre for Creative Leadership (CCL) based in Greensboro, North Carolina, for the GCL projects. By striking a balance between the creative problem- solving skills of an innovator and the soft skills of a leader, these students get well equipped to lead others in developing solutions to problems and issues which have significance to businesses and the society at large. Under the GCL program which is integrated in the curriculum, students are taken through an intensive research process grounded in Leadership and Innovation to work on projects that have impact on business and society. Alumni Success Story

Hometown: Mumbai, Maharashtra Undergraduate Education: Bachelors of Science (B.Sc) in Information Technology, UPG College of Management, Mumbai University Previous Experience: iGate, Ness Technologies and Ernst & Young, 3.5 years WeSchool Activities: Deputy Placement Secretary Co-Head of Weyapaar (Retail Club) at WeSchool Hiren Shah Campus Placement in: Croma PGDM- Retail Management

"Currently, organized retail constitutes around 8% of the total Indian retail market and is expected to grow significantly to 20% by 2020 and with the immense potential in this burgeoning industry, how can I make a difference in this equation?" Since his childhood, Hiren was always an inquisitive learner and a student who was result-oriented. His subsequent pursuit of B.Sc. IT coupled with his interest for electronics retailing and a popular title of “tech guru” led him to pursue the PGDM Retail Management program at WeSchool. Having worked for around 3.5 years in the industry and apart from the cutting-edge pedagogy delivered in a transformative education approach, one of the best things Hiren has experienced in these two years was Co-Heading the Retail Club - Weyapaar, which enabled knowledge sharing, idea creation and executions, based on structured activities dedicated to monthly retail sector themes. The hands-on experience of organizing, a roundtable with the overriding theme “Omni Channel Retail: Transcending Boundaries” by leading a team of 4 to 5 members of the club, led him to understand that, “…it was not just the retail theory concepts but the actual soft skills in handling people and the realization of succession planning, by mentoring our juniors to shoulder this responsibility after us, which I think has been invaluable to my professional and personal development”. WeSchool nurtures the concept of innovation and thought leadership amongst its students and to apply these management concepts in a retail reality, one needs to have premium knowledge of the concepts and processes such as retail marketing, merchandising, store operations and management, buying and retail logistics management along with the skills of general management. “One of my favourite subjects was “Retail Store Operations & Profitability” which has truly assisted me in understanding the need for lean store operations along with practical learning about store financials, licenses and compliances needed in running a store and ratios for analysing profitability through simulated experiential learning via case studies and live industry projects”. After the successful completion of these 2 years of PGDM-Retail Management program, he has recently secured a placement at Croma with a CTC of 7 Lakhs. WeSchool has expanded his ambitions and Hiren says, “I have realised that “retail is in detail” and this 2 year program at WeSchool has given me the right lenses to view these details. Also, retail being the second largest employer in the country I think it deserves an elevated station where stakeholders participate by choice and not as an alternative. I would like to be the catalyst for this change leading the retail industry to not just trigger business profitability but also to empower consumers in the retail marketplace.” This path-breaking course has truly motivated students like Hiren to develop their identity as budding professionals who are also Global Citizen Leaders and has galvanized their commitment to excel in the corporate world while being sensitive to the changing face of retail, which is dynamic, challenging, and provides diverse and stimulating growth opportunities in today's thriving commercial economies. 36 20 32 26 32

"Welingkar will give you enough opportunities, it's up to you on which one to hit and which to miss." For business problem solving, Design Thinking was the buzz word and Welingkar Institute was amongst the few institutes to provide this general management course based on Innovation, Blue Ocean Strategy, Out-of-the-box Thinking and Customer Focused Service/product Development. Owing to major focus on hands on projects, all the students including Dheeraj received industry specific experience from the start of the course. With a strong industry network WeSchool, helped students in directly reaching out to companies with their academic problems and understanding how these huge corporates handled such challenges. Prior to WeSchool, Dheeraj was working with Infosys Ltd. for 2.3 years as a senior system engineer. Currently, he is working as Business Intelligence and Analytics Project Manager at ICICI Prudential Life Insurance which was a campus placement at WeSchool. During his internship at WeSchool, Dheeraj worked at Mattel, China on a 3 months assignment under the mentorship of Prof. Dr. Srinivas Gondhalekar. The assignment was a great success and Dheeraj secured a Pre Placement Offer from Mattel to work at their global manufacturing plant in China. Benefit from studying PGDM - Business Design - Practical Learning, Industry specific course and Corporate interactions. IT engineer by profession, Dheeraj was an introvert since his engineering days. He was great at execution but avoided taking lead roles in projects. At WeSchool, working with senior faculties and industry interactions on a near weekly basis helped him gain confidence and leadership behavior. Implementation without the fear of failure - PGDM Business Design taught him that it is important to go out and implement ideas and conclude them whether it is feasible or not. Interaction with industry mentors helped him to built a strong professional network. Even today, Dheeraj takes advice from WeSchool Mentors for problems he faces at his workplace and they are happy enough to help him out on the same. Currently Dheeraj is managing all the Big Data Hadoop and Artificial Intelligence projects at ICICI Prudential Life Insurance helping the company find out insights and predict customer behavior in real-time on daily basis with a CTC of 9 Lakhs. CMC at WeSchool has a strong industry connect, which helps in getting the right recruiters as per student profiles. For Dheeraj, it was the ICICI group, who are amongst industry leaders in offering him a futuristic manager role.

Assessment Centre Process

An Assessment Centre (AC) Process is a method for assessing aptitude and performance; applied to a group of participants by trained assessors using various aptitude diagnostic processes in order to obtain information about applicants' abilities or development potential. The assessment centre focuses on a set of varied exercises, which are designed to simulate different aspects of the work environment. The AC exercises assess how closely the demonstrated behaviors, match with the ones required for a particular role. WeSchool is one of the few B-schools in the country that conducts an AC for its students. Typically, an AC is conducted in organizations to identify & groom the most competent employees to take on bigger roles. However, the purpose of conducting an AC for first year students at WeSchool is two-fold: • To help students identify their key strengths & key areas of development • To groom students to match industry needs The AC process was conducted for batch 2015-17 in the month of March 2016. The students were assessed on six intrinsic competencies (leadership, innovation, critical & analytical & integrative thinking, communication skills, and global perspective). A few more competencies, specific to students of HR and E-business courses, were added in this year's process. These competencies were assessed using four interventions namely, Group Discussion Exercise using case study, Role Play, In-basket Exercise, and Behavioral Event Interview. The purpose of the AC is to facilitate holistic development of each student in a way that matches industry needs. In order to achieve this, the assessors, through their feedback and introspection, were required to identify two competencies for each student that had to be worked upon by the particular student. Subsequently, each student was asked to prepare a Development Action Plan that comprises details of the actions he/she would take to improve on their respective 'gap areas' in order to get industry employable ready on completion of their PGDM program.

events Design for Dignity, an exhibition of Swedish design solutions for the differently abled Exhibition celebrates the spirit of the disabled from India and Sweden and shows the wayto creating equal opportunities for the disabled for inclusive growth.

The Consulate General of Sweden along with the Swedish Institute hosted the preview of the Swedish design exhibition titled Design for Dignity along with a photo exhibition titled AccessAbilty at WeSchool.

Design for Dignity, curated by Ace designer Ms. Margarita Bergfeldt Matiz, showcased 22 diverse innovative Swedish products that included foldable ramps, first generation of prisma pedestrian signals for those with impaired hearing or vision, easy-to-carry shower and toilet chair , a listening system that used digital signal processing technology to filter out background noise and enhance speech, a hassle-free Braille printer for high volumes of braille production, the super-light wheel chair , tetra packs for those with reduced hand functions, cutlery for easy eating, comforters to remain calm and many more.

While Design for Dignity highlighted the importance and benefits of being inclusive when developing products for the future, AccessAbilty showcased everyday stories of Swedish and Indian individuals with disability, their hopes, dreams and aspirations. The preview was attended by stakeholders from Sweden and India, researchers, manufacturers, doctors, academia, and representatives from NGOs along with students and faculty from WeSchool.

The expert curator of the exhibition, Ms. Margarita Bergfeldt Matiz spoke about the history of Swedish design and the importance of the right for an equal and dignified life for all while introducing a different perspective on the concept of disability. “In Sweden we haven’t yet fully won the battle for equality for disabled people, and the participants’ stories say a lot about the Swedish disability policy. Giving everyone a chance to be seen and heard is a step along the way to not seeing people with disabilities as a homogeneous group but as individuals with different needs. The personal stories of this exhibit and the design products on show can hopefully initiate discussions and strengthen cooperation internationally on accessibility, dignity and disability policies.”

“It's time we understood the debt of the society. Do not wait for someone to come and change the world. Just see yourself in a mirror and you will find the individual who can change the world.”

With words coming straight from his heart, Sudhir Mungantiwar, Minister for Finance, Planning and Forests, Government of Maharashtra began his dialogue with the entrants of WeSchool during the Foundation Fortnight. Prof. Dr. Uday Salunkhe, Group Director, faculty and students of WeSchool listened to every word spoken by the Hon’ble Minister in rapt attention.

As he congratulated the fresh joinees from the various MBA programs like Business Design, E-Biz, Retail, Healthcare, Rural Management of the 2016-18 batch at WeSchool, Shri. Mungantiwar said, “You are indeed very fortunate to have got this opportunity to study in one of leading B schools in the country. Knowledge is the key for betterment of not only oneself but also of the society but the truly knowledgeable one is the one who combines knowledge with imagination. In this era of innovation, that individual will be instrumental in bringing the change in the world. Look within yourself, search within yourself and you will find the change maker. Let us become those change makers that will make this world a better place for everyone to live in. “

“Dedicate yourself to realize the dreams of your parents. Choose the career path as per your capacities and inclinations. Everyone has qualities and limitations but the one that overcomes his limitations and converts them into strengths is the real winner. Be prepared to learn everything but always remember that the knowledge earned is to be used for societal benefit. When you change yourselves, you will step towards changing the nation. Be grateful to all the factors in the society for the advantages that you have got and learn to contribute your might for the upliftment of others.” He said.

He informed the students,”Water and forest cover and other environmental resources are mutually related. In Gadchiroli district, 77% of total geographic area is under forest cover. The same reduces to 58% in Sindhudurg. But in the drought affected Latur, where drinking water had to be supplied by trains, this coverage is only 0.07%. The total forest cover in the State is 20%, ideally, it should be up to 33%. If this increase in forest cover is to be achieved, then there is a need to plant 400 crore trees. The Government has committed to the target of planting 50 crore trees in coming three years.

On 1 July, 2016, 2crore trees will be planted all over Maharashtra and this will be just a beginning. For completing this great task of tree plantation, public participation is also required on large scale along with the efforts of the Government.”

WeSchool South India Level Idea Contest 2015-16

Industry Round Tables

At WeSchool, our endeavor has always been to provide cutting edge business education. However, the word education always has two sides to it - theory and practice. Strangely though, they seem mutually exclusive. As Albert Einstein has said, “In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are not”. This is often the classic disparity any MBA student faces after graduating from the B- School. We understand that today it is very essential to create employable people and that is why we actively facilitate a dialogue with the corporate world to know better what is expected from B-Schools and its graduates today.

To engage in 'immersive techniques' and interact with 'people in the thick of action' is integral to the transformative learning pedagogy at WeSchool. Towards achieving this goal, WeSchool has taken some decisive strides and one such initiative being "Confluence: A Constructive Collision Of The Greatest Business Minds - a series of Industry roundtables". These roundtables also provided our students with opportunities ranging in the form of projects, internships and even employment.

During this past year, WeSchool organised series of roundtables across diverse industry verticals. Through these roundtables WeSchool brought together over 1000 renowned industry professionals, who shared real-time challenges and some of these are live projects that students are working on at WeSchool.

Rendezvous with leading Media & Entertainment Personalities

WeSchool strongly believes in integrating the philosophy of “Leadership” & “Innovation” with a design-thinking approach into management education. To enhance the learning in the classroom, a blend of case-studies, scenario planning, role-plays, audio-visual material and experiential learning methods are used in addition to the conventional classroom lecture method. Teaching through theatre, literature, poems, films, and book reviews have been a popular medium to connect with students to teach several management & leadership principles which makes learning more experiential and fun as well. B-schools and companies have realized how theatre-kind of training can develop various attributes among individuals and can determine group dynamics.

At WeSchool we are going one step further by integrating theatre and literature and helping our students to not just learn from the unique pedagogy but by interacting with leading Media & Entertainment personalities who teach many lessons on decision-making.

Recently leading media personalities captivated WeSchool's new 2 years Full-time PGDM Program 2016-18 batch in their signature style. While students engage with these non-conventional leaders, they also are guided to delve on the learnings from their experiences which further enhances their professional approach.

Students Exchange Program

Apart from connecting with organizations, WeSchool also encourages students to learn about working in international groups through Universities it partners via student exchange programs.

The Copenhagen Business School offered one such opportunity where one of the WeSchool students with a Biotechnology background selected a course in Marketing Communications where he worked on a project with group members from Italy, Turkey and Lithuania. This global exposure has also provided him an opportunity to learn from social interactions with fellow students from various continents such as Asia, America and Europe. The perspectives they brought to the table has broadened the student’s approach to learning and addressing challenges in a dynamic corporate world. Duration Student internships are generally defined for a period of 2 months in May and June, is more convenient to carry out internships during the student's summer break at the institute.

Benefits

Undoubtedly, the internships offer a unique significant learning opportunities for our students as it helps them garner global experiences. The company too benefits in several ways; as an outsider and being younger in age, students are able to bring in fresh perspectives to any existing problem and give valuable recommendations for the benefit of the company. The company 57 also assesses the holistic performance of the student, to whom they could then potentially choose to make an employment offer to, in the near future.

alumni Alumni Meet 2016

With the proliferation of social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter have collectively debunked the "six-degrees of separation" theory, not only to connect with one another socially but also provides the means for networking, marketing and advertising activities. But because of this social media over- connectivity we have somewhere become disillusioned to meet our peers personally. This trend was observed over the past couple of years, when the attendance for the Alumni Day was falling year on year.

Precisely to overcome this barrier and to share the happiness over WeSchool's unswerving growth and success as a bigger family, this year WeSchool had organized 2 alumni meets for its full time as well as its part time master's alumni. To revisit the MELA A L U M N I R E U N I O N 2 0 1 6 Nostalgia Lane, this year the theme for the alumni meets was “We Mela”.

We welcomed over 850 Alumni dating back from first batch to the recently passed out alumni. This year we commenced the alumni meets with a different format including different fun-filled engaging activities for our Alumni revisiting campus since their graduation. These diverse activities ranged from a Cricket Match to a stand-up comedy act by India's top 6 stand- up comedian Mr. Sorab Pant. It also included a stunning performance by WeSchool's own Band and Dance performance as well as a special flash mob Dance by our Students .

Both the meets were well attended and participated by our alumni. We at WeSchool also enjoyed the events and interacted with many enthusiastic alumni which has encouraged us to host many such events in the future as well.
