Focus on activity: Music Genres

Target audience: Ensino Fundamental F2 (last grades)/Ensino Médio Aim: to identify different genres, translate into English Duration: 20-30 min Organization: group work Material: CD or MP3 with song(s), CD player or computer to play the song(s), slips of paper with the lyrics in Portuguese

Preparation: • Watch the video (accessed on May 20, 2014) to get familiar with music genres: (accessed on May 20, 2014)Choose a song (suggested links below) and print the first/second verses and chorus (2 per group). Have the slips of paper with the sentences of the song ready.

Procedure: • Divide students into groups of 5-6 students. • Show students some examples of genres. (accessed on: May 20, 2014). If you don’t have access to internet during class, record this demo or another one. • Choose a genre and ask each student to think of one band/singer of this genre. • Ask all the students to stand up and ask the first student to read out his answer. • If anyone else has the same band they should both sit down. Do this until everyone has said the band/ singer they wrote down. • The team with the most people left at the end are the winners. • Choose a song.

What is the song genre? How does the song make you feel? What do you think the song is about? • After the song has finished, give the students a minute or two to answer, then ask what they think. • Divide students into groups of four-five members

Photocopiable – Teacher’s copy • Give each group two print outs of the first/second verse and chorus of the song in Portuguese. • They should translate these as best as they can into English. • When everyone is finished ask the groups to read their translation. • Play the video/audio again and compare the translations to the songs.

Wrap up: • Divide students in groups and ask each group to hum a genre. The other groups have to guess what it is. Score one point for each correct guessing. Play it several times.
