Witness what happens when a product is marketed not for every possible demograph- ic but instead, for one-size-fits-all. All the same, going against the grain, after a hard morning’s shopping at the mall, the mom from our example would like to take her son to a chil- dren’s concert at the local symphony orchestra. Would he like to come along? No way! She drags him there anyway. He wriggles and squirms and mumbles and pops gum as the conductor takes the orchestra through an unrehearsed mishmash —a little of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf and a bit of Benjamin Britten’s Young Personís Guide to the Orchestra. No money has been allocated specifically for assuring this concert’s quality; little thought has gone into its overall presentation, educational thrust, or age-appropriateness. Kids of all ages turn up, including many who are not ready to sit still. At the most basic level, GALANTIS is two friends making music together. The fact that they’re Christian “Bloodshy” Karlsson of Miike Snow and Linus Eklow, aka Style of Eye, is what changes the plot. The accomplished duo’s groundbreaking work as GALANTIS destroys current electronic dance music tropes, demonstrating that emotion and musicianship can indeed coexist with what Eklow calls “a really really big kind of vibe.” “GALANTIS is about challenging, not following.” says Karlsson. Karlsson should know about shaking things up. As half of production duo Bloodshy & Avant, he reinvented pop divas like Madonna, Britney Spears and Kylie Minogue in the early 2000s. He co-wrote and produced Spears’ stunning, career-changing single “Toxic” to the tune of a 2005 Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. Since then he’s been breaking more ground as one-third of mysterious, jackalobe-branded band Miike Snow. Thus, XY model symmetric (broken) phase ↔ normal (supercon- ducting) phase of the superconductor. • Duality predicts that the Abrikosov vortex tension T scales with the XY model exponent νXY = 0.6723. The penetration depth λ (or ′ inverse photon mass) is also argued to scale with exponent ν = νXY. • However, universality has not been unambiguously observed: ′ - High-Tc YBa2Cu3O7−δ experiments [3, 4] observe ν ≈ 0.3 . 0.5 - Monte Carlo simulations of the Ginzburg-Landau theory appear to favour ν′ ∼ 0.3 [5]. • A problem for the Monte Carlo simulations is that the duality is ex- pected to be valid only in a very narrow temperature range around the critical temperature. • In order to avoid the problem above, we study a special limit of Ginzburg-Landau theory, the frozen superconductor (FZS) (an integer-valued gauge theory), which is exactly dual to the XY-Villain model at all temperatures. Thus, the transition in FZS is bound to be in the XY model universality class. Studying the critical quantities of FZS can shed light on the problems faced in the Ginzburg-Landau theory simulations. And what a year it was! The year had barely begun when we were already saying goodbye to musical heroes gone far too soon. David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, Glenn Frey, Leon Russell, Maurice White, Prince, George Michael ... the list goes on. And yet, despite the sadness of these losses, there is much for the industry to celebrate. Music consumption is at an all-time high. Overall consumption of album sales, song sales and audio on-demand streaming volume is up 5% over 2015, fueled by an incredible 203% increase in on-demand audio streams, enough to offset declines in sales and return a positive year for the business. 2016 also marked the highest vinyl sales total to date. It was an incredible year for Canadian artists, at home and abroad. Eight different Canadian artists had #1 albums in 2016, led by Drake whose album Views was the biggest album of the year in Canada as well as the U.S. The Tragically Hip had two albums reach the top of the chart as well, their latest release and their 2005 best of album, and their emotional farewell concert in August was something we’ll remember for a long time. Justin Bieber, Billy Talent, Céline Dion, Shawn Mendes, Leonard Cohen and The Weeknd also spent time at #1. Break out artist Alessia Cara as well as accomplished superstar Michael Buble also enjoyed successes this year.

Technological advancements and new partnerships have allowed us to provide robust, comprehensive data in more accessible, customizable and useful ways in 2017. Over the past year, we received a record number of requests for Nielsen Music research and insight reports. Welcome to the Nielsen Music Year-End Report, which examines the trends that shaped the Paul Shaver Canadian music industry in 2017 with definitive consumption figures and charts. Vice President/ Head of Nielsen Music Canada Overall consumption of albums, songs and On-Demand Audio streaming grew 13.6% year-over- year. On-Demand Audio streaming offset decreases in track and album sales and, on December 3, for the first time in history, it surpassed the 900 million per week mark. Ed Sheeran led all artists in Canada with overall consumption and had the top-selling album of the year. Six Canadians had No. 1 albums on the Billboard Canadian Albums chart in 2017, including The Weeknd’s Starboy, Drake’s More Life, Arcade Fire’s Everything Now, Shania Twain’s Now, Pierre Lapointe’s La Science Du Coeur and Gord Downie’s Introduce Yerself. The passing of Gord Downie captured the nation’s attention. In the week following his death, The Tragically Hip’s overall consumption increased by 1,000% over the previous week.
