Bahasa kiasan adalah salah satu gaya bahasa atau cara mengungkapkan yang memiliki makna harfiah yang berbeda dari kata tersebut. Bahasa kiasan sangat umum di dalam puisi. Ini sangat bermanfaat bagi penulis karena dapat membuat bahasa mereka lebih indah untuk di dengarkan. Kiasan menyampaikan bayangan dari suatu makna yang tidak begitu bisa di ekspresikan dengan cara lain. Maka daripada itu, penulis memutuskan untuk memilih judul “A Study of Figurative Language in Demi Lovato’s Selected Songs” sebagai judul kertas karya. Penulis akan menjelaskan kiasan dan arti dari lirik lagu yang mengandung kiasan. Metode yang digunakan penulis dalam kertas karya ini adalah metode penelitian kepustakaan dimana penulis mengumpulkan beberapa buku yang berhubungan dengan topik ini. Dalam kertas karya ini penulis akan fokus dengan asosiasi (simili), metafora, hiperbola, dan personifikasi. Tujuannya adalah untuk mengetahui bahasa kiasan yang digunakan di lagu milik Demi Lovato dan menggambarkan arti lirik tersebut. Maka dari itu, penulis menerima kritikan dan masukan terhadap kertas karya ini agar dapat menjadi lebih baik.

Figurative language is one of style of language or figure of speech a way of saying something other than the literal meaning of the word. Figurative language is very common in poetry. This is very useful to writer because it can make their language more beautiful to listen. Figurative convey shades of meaning that can’t be expressed exactly any other way. Therefore, author decided to choose “A Study of Figurative Language in Demi Lovato’s Selected Songs” as the title for the study. Author will describe about figurative and the meaning for the lyrics that contain figurative. The method that the author used in this paper is qualitative-library research where the author collects some book that relevant with this topic. In this paper, author will focus on four types of figurative which are simile, metaphor, hyperbole and, personification. The aim was to know the figurative language used in Demi Lovato’s songs and to portray the meanings found in the lyrics. Therefore, the author welcomes any critics and suggestions that make this paper better.

CHAPTER I 1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 The Background of Study

Language is one of crucial tools of human beings to communicate to each another. Without language, people will never be able to communicate one another. People need language to communicate, to interact, and to get information from others.

According to Harmer (2007:13) language is used widely for communication between people who do not share the same first (or even second) language. It means that language can be a primary necessity in human life. It has a big role for every people in making good relationship with others.

Language is a means of communications. Through language, people can express their ideas, thought, and feelings. Hornby (1972:473) states that language is a human and non-intensive method of communicating ideas, feelings, and desires by means of a system of sounds and sound symbols. The language may represent the explicit and implicit feelings and thoughts. It can also be described as a vehicle of thought, because through language people can share or deliver what put in mind.

Language may refer either to the specifically human capacity for acquiring and using complex systems of communication, or to a specific instance of such a system of complex communication. The scientific study of language in any of its senses is called linguistics.

When we study about linguistic, we will know about semantics which study of meaning. In English we know that meaning have important position to study because it will give influence to someone to understand about speaker’s mean or how far some information can receive by listeners. For example, some lyric on the songs uses figurative language to make it more interesting and imaginative.

Figurative language is language using figures of speech (way of saying one thing and another meaning). It is related to the lyrics of songs that use figurative language. There are many types of figurative languages such as: metaphor, simile, symbol, hyperbole, personification, imagery, repetition, imagery, alliteration, metonymy, and assonance. This figurative language is well known in education start from elementary to university level.

In this study, the author is interested to analyze the songs because many figurative languages can be found on this song. Therefore, the author will discuss the figurative language found in song lyrics and try to classify and describe it.

1.3 The Scope of The Study

After reading the lyrics in the album, the writer has some focus on 4 figures of speech, such as: metaphor, simile, hyperbola and personification. And there are six songs contained to describe.

1.4 The Purpose of The Study

1. To identify the types of figurative language used in the song.

2. To describe the meaning of figurative language used in the song.

1.5 The Method of The Study

The method used the library method by collecting data from books in the library as the references and also from the internet with steps as follows:

1. Reading the lyrics carefully and repeatedly.

2. Collecting and classifying the part that use figurative language.

3. Identifying the meaning of the lyrics.

4. Concluding the result of the data.

CHAPTER II 2. REVIEW AND RELATED OF LITERATURE

2.1 Definitions of Figurative Language

This chapter covers definitions and theories which are related to support the subject. The writer has done some literature review in many sources such as books, journal and internet websites.

Language is important thing in human life, language also plays an important role in human communication. Without language we cannot communicate with each other. Language is a system of arbitary vocal symbols used for human communication. There are two kinds of language: literal language and figurative language. In this paper, writer only explain about figurative language. Figurative language is a language which uses figures of speech. It is means that away a saying one thing and meaning another.

According to Knickerbocker and Renninger (1963: 367) state that figurative language is sometimes called metaphorical language, or simply metaphor, because its Greek ancestor "Metaphereien" means to carry meaning beyond its literal meaning (meta=beyond+pherin=to being-i.e., to bring beyond). They propose some kinds of figures, namely; simile, metaphor, personification, synecdoche, metonymy, hyperbole, irony, dead metaphor, allusion, paradox, and symbol.

According to Dale, et.all (1971:220) figurative language is beautiful words that are used to given an effect in way to make comparison between one thing to

another thing. He also says that the use of figurative language can raise a special connotation.

Figurative or figure of speech is not only used in the language of literature, such as drama, poetry, or prose but they are also alive in liguistics study or common usage in writing lyrics on song and daily speech. However, most people will directly consider the term figure of speech as a the term of literary study because it is mostly used as stylistic devices analyzing literary work. The most of the familiar figurative language wich will be analyzed in this study are some types including metaphor, simile, hyperbola and personification.

Based on defenition above, writer can conclude that figurative language has interesting power when put in lyrics song or speak orally because it is study many kind of figurative meaning. The composer can express their feeling by using figurative language in his song lyrics.

2.2 Types of Figurative Language

There are kinds of figurative language’s type, in this chapter, writer only explain types that are used for the study.

2.2.1. Metaphor

A metaphor is a comparison made between things which are essentially not alike. Statement that does not make sense.

Example: Her voice is music to his ears

Meaning: This implies that her voice makes him feel happy.

2.2.2. Personification

When someting that is not human is given human-like qualities, this is known as personification.

Example: The piece of chocolate cake is calling my name

Meaning: Chocolate cake doesn’t have ability to call someone, this uses

personification to express the feeling of desire and hunger.

2.2.3. Hyperbole

Hyperbole is a figure of speech which uses an extravagant or exaggerated statement to express strong feelings, often in a humorous way.

Example: I ate a ton of food for dinner.

Meaning: The person in this sentence isn’t really eating a ton of food, but

he eats a lot of food that makes his stomach full. Word ton is

an exaggerated.

2.2.4. Simile

Simile is a form of comparison in which one thing is compared to another unlike thing by using specific words of comparison like, as, and resembles.

Example: Jamie runs as fast as the wind.

Meaning: As fast as the wind is an equalizing, he isn’t really run like a

wind, but he runs so fast.

2.3. Song Lyrics

Listening to music is one of comfortable activity. When people feeling sad, happy, or feeling bad, music can be an alternative for expression your feeling.

We know that music is not complete without song. In music, song is a composition for voice performed by singing or alongside musical instrument. In every culture, song are composed and performed for different purpose.

According to Sharndama and Suleiman as cited in Akporobaro (2006) song assume a variety of forms, some of the song are rich, imaginative, and elaborated in the play of words, rythm, and melody. There is one thing important in a part of song, it is called lyric. A lyric is a fairly short poem which is the expression of strong feelings of thoughts or perceptions of a single speaker in a meditative manner.

Lyrics of the song can be as the description of song’s writer expression to devote the feeling, thought, and the willingness. Therefore, lyric can be as the form to convey a message in communication. To understand the lyrics, people have to determine the speaker’s intention, which sometimes the composer is using figurative language on the song, therefore the listeners not only be able to enjoy the melody of the song but they can get more knowledge from interpreting the point of view on things in the world revealed through song’s lyrics.

CHAPTER III

3. FINDING AND DISCUSSION

In this chapter, the writer would like to describe about four kinds of figurative language found in the songs and its meaning. Figurative language use figure of speech a way of saying something other than the literal meaning of the word.

3.1. Collecting of Figurative Language in Demi Lovato’s Songs

The writer collected figurative language of Demi Lovato’s songs into table based on those songs. This step was to make a complete list and the readers understood to know title of songs that had figurative language in this study, there were: Skyscraper, Warrior, Made in USA, Let it Go, Gift Of a Friend,Heart

Attack.

1. I’m a warrior 1. She is comparing herself to a warrior. This means that she has been through alot and she has conquered her problems.

The writer classified figurative language of Demi Lovato’s songs on the table. This step was to differentiate types of figurative language and sentences of figurative language to make the readers more understand about result of this research.

Based on the classifying in finding, Simile were the most of figurative languages that consist of seven lyrics of figurative language. The writer found two lyrics of figurative language in Personification. Metaphor consists of three lyrics of figurative language. The writer found five lyrics of figurative language in hyperbole.

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

4.1 Conclusion

Figurative language is language that uses words or expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation. When a writer uses literal language, he or she is simply stating the facts as they are. After analyzing the figurative languages in Demi Lovato's selected songs, the writer concludes that each lyric really presenting the song. We might learn and understanding how the authors try to tell us about the story of a song. The dominant of figurative type that is used in the song lyrics is simile and the least figurative meaning used in the album is personification.

4.2 Suggestion

The researcher proposes some suggestion, but this does not mean that it has perfect finding. For the readers and the further researcher who are interested in analyzing ierary works about song lyrics. It is suggested to understand the whole of song. Understanding the language style it will make them easier to catch the meaning, even the theme of the song. For the further researcheris hoped that this paper can be used as referenced to conduct another research on language style in other object.
