MICK BRUTON PRESIDENT Queensland State Championships July 2015

ome of the highlights of the tournament include Max Bates (QLD) winning the MS65 after having a tough match against fellow Australian representative, Roger Davey (SA), in a tight semi-final. Max was down in both sets but fought back to get the upper hand and win the match. S Victorian Bruce Ferguson’s win in the MS55 final against Ian Jarman (VIC) was a match of attacking and defensive play as Ian played every attack- ing shot to have Bruce under pressure but Bruce came up with equally great defensive shots to the open court. The long rallies were a feature of this match. Ollie Smith (QLD), a past champion at many TSA tournaments over the years, met and defeated John O’Brien (NSW) in the semi final of the MS80 before conquering Claude Wenzel (QLD) in the final. Both John and Ollie played many great rallies but Ollie produced magnificently placed chips and volleys to outmanoeuvre John. Several overseas players enhanced the quality of tennis played at this tourna- ment. Sakiko Ormes (JPN) won the WS35 RR; unseeded Leo Pijnacker (NED) defeated Chris O’Mara (QLD) in the MS45 and Max Bates (QLD) de- feated Pichet Boratisa (THA) in the MS65. Leon Naude (RSA) partnered 75MS Don Biddle and Stephen Fine (QLD) to win the MD60. Derek Schroder One of the outstanding matches was the MD35 which was won by Adam Alessandrini (SA) and Rhys McDougall (QLD) against the powerful hitting of Richard Wynwood (TAS) and Peter Doohan. There were several players who won multiple events at this tournament. Congratulations to Adam Alessandrini, Chris O’Mara, Narelle Follington, Max Bates, Terry McLellan, Ollie Smith, Wanda Howes and Lesley Walton.

arrawonga Lawn Tennis Club, in Piper Street, is to host the Tennis Seniors Victoria Grasscourt Tennis Championships in November. What a great way to prepare for the National Championships on grass in Shepparton! It’s easy on Y your body, and it’s a superb playing surface, TOP quality grasscourts! Many NSW players were there last year and found the courts and hospitality to be “next to none”! The facilities are sensational, and the organisers go out of their way to ensure a great tournament. If there are superior grass courts anywhere, we’d like to know where! Nick Hinneberg and his crew are once again working hard to have all the hospitality in place from the sandwich makers down to the bar staff! Can they organise great weather once again? It remains to be seen, but we trust they will succeed. Entries may be done on-line through the Tennis Seniors Victoria website: www.tennisseniors.org.au/vic Payment can be made by Cheque or on-line with Credit card. he Cessnock Ranking Tournament was a success weather wise and for these new entries with 135 players this year. There were thirty men in the Friday members! singles with sets finishing late in the afternoon. The women’s singles were down this year with four players only, so they decided to play the Simon Baekdal TAmerican Round Robin which made a total of thirteen in two divisions for even Das Balgi play. This year we did not have any disagreements during play or after, so Jeff Bush everyone played by the rules of tennis. Senior players have been tutored early in Max Carter life as to behaviour on the courts, not like the new representatives for . Glenn Conwell Facebook posts by Kris Renneberg depicted ice on the ground at the courts...a Belinda Hedley chilly start, but after the thaw, there was some fun tennis and great camaraderie Pamela Johnstone amongst the players. The REAL CLUB DE POLO DE BARCELONA This club situated only 6 km from the centre of Barcelona has approx. 12,000 members!! including all the other sporting and social events that the Club offers.

The Tennis Section is fascinating. There are 42 separate courts. First matches start at 6.00pm in the evening with further matches at 7.30, 9.00 and the final matches going on at 10.30pm. Long matches finish in the early hours of the next day. The courts surround on several levels a central outdoor in the trees dining area with sensibility the control Clubhouse adjacent. The restaurant opens at 10.00pm. The Buffet costs E.23 (sayA$35) and is sumptuous. Champagne and beer flow freely and at about E.2 for a glass of champagne and about E.1 for a beer it certainly does flow. Most courts have a little grandstand area where followers can watch their favourites in action. A couple of centre courts have permanent stands for about 2,000. Ilie Nastase from Bucharest aged now 69 (pictured below with Damjana) and world No.1 during 1973/74 played tennis one evening with Henri Leconte. Handsome Henri is only 52 and has already been married 3 times – will obviously go to 4 !! He won the French doubles in 1984 and helped win the for France in 1991. Ilie is still a great player to watch, although older certainly the better player, makes very few mistakes – and has also been married 3 times. Someone quipped, “Adrian, you are in good company!” How inconsiderate. Evening temperatures were about 25-27C. all nights. Fortunately we all stayed at the Fairmont Hotel, a 5-Star complex adjacent to the Polo Club. Evening meals were either in the Tennis Garden, the Fairmont outdoor pool garden or the Polo Club itself. Tennis players had special rates at the hotel. Just as well as I was down to my last pair of socks. I must say though, the Committee arranged this assistance excellently and willingly making our stay much more enjoyable in the luxury of the avant-garde architecture of the newer hotel. It also draws in many players that would not come. Every evening was fun, a social gathering of large numbers of viewers and admirers with tennis simply as the drawcard excuse for all. This is a clever concept – a little “Kooyong-ish” but in a much more relaxed way, indeed anxiously friendly to please, inviting, making you want to come back every night, every year! Simply they have created a warm atmosphere where friends meet and plenty of background activity. The theme obviously for many locals was, “come, let’s go out to the Club have a fine dinner, drinks only if you like, and maybe watch some of the tennis if there’s any good looking ones around!” For many, these summer evenings at Club De Polo in the huge pulsating Catalonian city of Barcelona it was a perfect choice. First to the actual tennis: Last year there was a good 85+ group. This year there was none. So I was stuck into an 80+ era and got stymied 7-5 6-2 by a Basque who was actually 5 years and 8 months younger. In the final against a Spaniard he won the 1st set but then did his back in – wish he had done that earlier!! He had NO backhand, played a forehand on both sides and hit the ball either side at 1,000mph! After the final he went back to high Basque country on the border with France. He will only come out again same time next year. I will not be there! When I asked him, ‘was he Spanish?’ he said, “No, no I’m Basque.” Thus the reference earlier. Basque people want to separate from Spain as Scotland does from England. All Mad! He was a great soccer player!! He took up tennis at 45. The Basque Socceroos no longer wanted him.

Now to the real tennis. Andrew Rae literally carved his way through the 60+. His machine-like precision, perfect control and concentration are a pleasure to behold. He won his final 6-2 6-4 and only dropped 4 games in the previous 3 matches. We followed him adoringly everywhere, a little pack of supporters. Peter Keller similarly carved his way through the 70+. His tip-toe approach and uncanny shot production often completely unexpected by both the opposition – and us – were a pleasure to behold. He won his final 6-1 6-3 and only dropped 6 games in the 3 previous matches. We also followed him everywhere sometimes having to split the pack. Later both the ‘boys’ went over to Bordeaux from 20th to 25th of July and repeated their performance even better. Peter won his final 6-0 6-0 against Muehlenburg from Austria whom he had played in the final the week before at Barce while Andrew won his final 6-2 6-3.

Their support the Australian Seniors Tennis Districts Tennis Association for the makes it all worth it. Di teams. past 15 years, representing the FPlaying in Turkey in 2013 as a member Association at inter district level of the 45s team was just amazing and an against other like clubs in the experience that I will never forget. It is Metropolitan area. During that time, one that was shared by our 35s and 55s particularly in the last 8 years when teams plus of course, all other playing with the same team we have competing teams from around the world been victorious on six occasions and at the same time. runners up twice.

Now also at Barce was Susan Thomas from Australia. Susan did not reach any finals but was certainly a very nice addition to the Aussie group. She played in all 3 events. Her best effort was to get to semis of 55+ Ladies Doubles with her partner Chloe Montanez from Colombia. They only lost 7-5 6-2. At Bordeaux was also Matt Barnes from Australia in the 35+. Matt won one of his 4 round-robin matches. Bordeaux is an older rambling city with an inspiring cathedral and other ‘things’ I cannot recall. I am sure both Matt and Susan have a wonderful time in these ‘tennis’ venues.

Barcelona Reverting to Barcelona before closing out, tennis is but the ‘excuse’ that we have been using to see the world, irrespective of age or prowess. In Euro especially there is an attached social part that wonderfully compliments the tennis. Barcelona is the capital City of the autonomous Community of Catalonia and Spain’s second largest city with a population over 3 million. It seems much larger. Perhaps the city boundary is small and does not include outer suburban areas. The official language is Catalan names for its origin from Catalonia in north east Spain. It is also the official language of the State of Andorra the small Principality perched on the Pyrenees between Spain and France. Once we drove through there on the way to Bordeaux staying 1 night in this fascinating duty-free hub of disorganised shopping – even cheap cars but they must be registered in L to R Peter Keller, Adrian Alle, Andorra so that the revenue is constantly collected. Andrew Rae Basque country is a small autonomous community in northern Spain. They speak a separate Basque language, there is no official capital – and they are all mad mountain climbers or soccer players. Twin explorers, Cathie Keller and Damjana Simoncic feasted on the marvellous sights, architecture and culture (whatever that is!). In Barcelona the days were always hot and fine. We all do fervently bow however to the biblical knowledge that Damjana showers on us, only when asked. This information certainly does make sightseeing/travelling much more rewarding. For E.23 each they rode the open-air top-deck of the City Sightseeing buses for hours at a time day after day, coming in at night exhausted but happy! I did it one day – like many others after bowing out from the REAL de POLO circus. The bus can be, IS!, rather wind-blowy, smelly, hot, tiring but never, never boring. Barcelona is a city that stretches living to 24 hours each day. 7 Membership Drive

Our NEW member recruitment program is still going strong, and it’s very pleasing to see that most of those who received free membership last year have renewed for 2016! We are now up to 1400 members, from 2014-15, some of whom may like to renew for 2016, even though it’s late! It is important to have all players in Senior tournaments on our membership list, as it is through these contributions that we continue to support the tournaments in our Country Circuit, and run our Annual State Championships. It is a very modest amount of $20, and even though many of us have membership with other associations, it is important that we all support Tennis Seniors as well, or there would be no tournaments around the country!

ifteen Singles events and twenty four Age Doubles events are listed above, but there were a few hundred more winners from Combined Men’s, Ladies and Mixed Doubles, too numerous to mention! The total number of players this year was 316! (Apologies to those whose results are not mentioned!) What a weekend it was – with perfect sunny days, little or no cloud, and NO wind! FThe Forster committee and volunteers combined well to achieve a mammoth task, once again, led by President Margaret Guider and Secretary Judy Halpin. Coach Jaime McDonagh and Gerald Fitzgerald were assisted by Larraine Binstead in entering all the competitors’ names and results into TP, which have been sent to the Rankings Coordinator Gail Bates. Many helpers catered extremely well for us, with barbecued meats, various rolls and sandwiches for lunch and delicious cakes, slices and scones for morning and afternoon snacks. The bar was a popular relaxing area at the end of each day, thank you to all who served us!

Snippets: Some young women found a short cut back from Taree, but it was a long DIRT road! (Ask Colleen A) Welcome to Leon Naude (RSA) 60 MS Winner, who was playing in his first NSW tournament! We hope he plays many more! Peg Hoysted made an appearance after a two-year absence, thanks to the insistence of some of her friends, and she couldn’t manage to go for a walk into town on Saturday afternoon...she kept stopping to chat! 11 Tennis Seniors NSW Dec 2014 - Dec 2015 Do you need a Track Suit?
