The British first landed in India in Surat for the purpose of trade.A new sea route connecting Europe to India became popular in 1498 when Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama came to Calicut .Slowly European powers rushed to Asia to get their own trading post. The primary motive was trade but they started to aquire the territory. British were one of the most popular in them. The British East India company was formed in 1599 and came to India as traders in spices. They primarily traded silk, cotton, tea, opium etc. After getting the permission of Mughal emperor Jahangir and Vijaynagara empire to open factories and establish trade in India, the British company started many trading centres over the East and West coasts of India. The East India company realised that India was one big collection of provincial Kingdom and wanted to concentrate old resources. Thus the company started to meddle in Indian politics.
Through overwhelming military strength, the East India company fought and captured the local kingdoms and made themselves as the dominant force by the 18th century. After the major, but unsuccessful Indian rebellion led by the Rani Lakshmi Bhai in 1857, the British crown took direct control over India.
The Indians were treated as slaves and they are not allowed to speak or work against the British. Indian soldiers were treated inhumanly in British camps. These cruelties, thus led to various freedom movements across India.
