13 Bringing the Spirit of the Holidays to Montana Avenue

Shop safely and in style, from Thanksgiving through New Years Day. This year, Montana Avenue is bringing the spirit of the holidays be- ginning Thanksgiving weekend, with specials in honor of Black Fri- day and Small Business Saturday that extend throughout the sea- son. Enjoy the personal touch of shopping local at the 150 shops that line the street, where you can find something for everyone on your shopping list. Store and restaurant owners are going above and beyond to create a safe and stress-free shopping environment for customers, enforcing the wearing of masks and social distanc- ing, regulating store capacity, and installing plexiglass partitions where appropriate.

Holiday cheer will fill the streets. With Hanukah arriving early this year, on December 11, and Christ- mas following two weeks later, Montana Avenue is gearing up to be a special destination. Local shops are filling their windows with notes of sparkle, color and shine to “bring the cheer” and “promote buying local” says Jane Walker, Manager of Texture and Board Member of the Merchants Association.

Take a leisurely stroll and enjoy the holiday wonderland that the merchants are creating; help judge the first-ever local window display competition that begins Thanksgiving weekend (winners have bragging rights for the year!), enjoy the candy-cane ribbon decorated parking meters, and don’t forget... Santa’s mailboxes will be at three locations for little ones who want to drop off a letter to the North Pole! // 2020 The shops and restaurants on Montana Avenue are ready to fulfill all your holiday needs. Let the festivities begin! 'Tis the Season 'Tis

For a thoughtfully curated selection of craft beer, check out Ashland Hill 2807 Main Street, during Social Hour and be sure to try their mouth-watering shishito mac 'n cheese.

DESSERT Don't forget to leave a little room for something sweet! Main Street has plenty of dessert options, sure to satisfy any craving. Voted Santa Monica’s Most Loved frozen dessert year after year, Dolcenero Gela- to 2400 Main Street, offers decadent gelato flavors from Florence, Italy hand-made daily. Another small-batch shop, Sweet Rose Cream- ery 2726 Main Street, dishes out classic and rotating seasonal fla- vors for a superior ice cream experience. If it’s comfort you’re craving, look no further than Ben & Jerry’s 2441 Main Street, for their fan-fa- vorite Half-Baked ice-cream, Chunky Monkey and more.

FOOD & A SIDE OF ART If the food wasn't enough to appeal to your senses, maybe the new art installations will! Restaurateurs are taking advantage of their new parklets by getting a little creative and designing the new k-rails — concrete barricades meant to safely separate the parklets from the street— with a little help from local artists. Hunter Hall, executive di- rector of the Main Street Business Improvement Association (MSBIA) says that a partnership with Beautify Earth is the culprit for the bright and colorful installations you will be seeing throughout the coming year. Hall was one of the first people to spearhead the parklet dining program, believing that the al fresco experience would continue to grow “as the public psyche has changed” in favor of outdoor dining; // 2020 now that there are hundreds of parklets in Santa Monica, Hall said that it was a “natural decision” to brighten up the parklets to inspire creativity. 17 MiracleALL SEASON on Main LONG Street

Miracle on Main Street returns during the month of December! With two iconic holiday tress, roaming carolers and the big guy himself— Santa— the holidays are in full force on Main Street. Come enjoy the festive tidings all season long with the whole-family. TWO HOLIDAY TREES World famous Shopping Cart Tree (2415 Main Street) The holidays are all about tradition, which is why the 40-foot tall Shop- ping Cart Tree inside the -designed building, will be lit up for the 26th year in a row. 84 shopping carts will be staged in the shape of a Christmas tree and lit up with 1,500 lightbulbs, held to- gether with 4,000 zip-ties.

California Heritage Museum Tree (2612 Main Street) The beloved 13-foot tall Noble fir will stand tall over Main Street, deco- rated with colorful lights, taking center stage on the Heritage Museum lawn. Both trees will be on display starting December 5. JINGLE JANGLE ROCKERS While you're out holiday shopping, or enjoying a delicious meal at one of Main Street's parklet dining locations, listen closely for the melodic sounds of your favorite holiday songs from the Jingle Jangle Rockers. For the first three weekends in December (12/5; 12/13 and 12/20) from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m., the local A Cappella group will roam up and down Main Street, bringing festive tidings of your favorite holiday jingles. SANTA CLAUS The yuletide songs sung by the carolers caught the attention of the big man himself, Santa Claus! After taking a break from toy-making, Santa hopped in his sleigh and travelled all the way from the North Pole to say hello to all the good little boys and girls this holiday season. This year Santa will be socially distant like the rest of us, but you will be able to wave hello and see his red, speckled cheeks with the help from some local heroes: the Santa Monica Fire Department! Hang around on (12/5; 12/13 and 12/20) and catch Santa who travelled all the way from the North Pole, riding along Main Street. // 2020 'Tis the Season 'Tis

Each year, the City and our community partners promote the Buy Local message for the holidays. This year, it’s never been more im- portant. The COVID pandemic continues with fundamental changes to our daily lives, bringing economic uncertainty and affecting all sec- tors of our community. It is important we prioritize our local business- es and help keep them open.

This is the year of the vote, voting for our local elected officials and our next president. It’s also the year to vote with our wallets. The businesses we chose to support this holiday season will be the hopefully lasting winners. Your support may get them over the eco- nomic hurdle for survival.

The good news is that buying local is easier now than ever before… and it’s safe! Santa Monica is blessed with a vibrant downtown district and local neighborhood districts. Each one has shops, restau- rants and services to meet your holiday needs.

The Buy Local SM Holiday Gift Guide (@BuyLocalSM Instagram) will launch on November 24 and it will be full of fun local gift ideas to help make your holiday shopping easy. The focus this year is on af- fordable, sustainable, giveback and safer-at-home gifts. Buying local does not have to be expensive and it’s much more sustainable than shopping online due to the reduction of delivery packaging and the economic support we provide to our local businesses. // 2020 'Tis the Season 'Tis

• For purchases made at a brick and mortar business, the City of SM’s General Fund receives approximately 20 cents of each dollar of sales taxes collected in the City. (the remainder goes to the State of CA and, LA County). Nearly 10 cents of this is generated from the voter-ap- proved Measure GSH with a large portion of this reinvested in our community to support schools and affordable housing.

• Purchases made online with companies not located in Santa Monica (e.g. Amazon) generate sales tax revenue which goes into the LA County Pool, of which the City of SM only receives about 2 cents out of every dollar of this revenue. Our schools, parks and libraries miss out! Thus, your LOCAL purchases are nearly 10x’s more impactful – vote with your dollars, think local first!

• During COVID we are encouraging “SM SHINES – Buy Local, Shop Safe” – purchases made online but picked up at the Santa Monica store (e.g. in-store or curbside pickup), ensures the City receives the maximum amount of sales tax revenue. Taxes from purchases or- dered online and shipped directly to your house go into LA County pool meaning our schools, parks and libraries miss out!
