Wielki strach ogarnął królów, mtawarów5 i cały lud. Nie mogli stanąć do walki, bo od tych czasów, kiedy zniszczył tę ziemię Kru6, chociaż minęło już wiele lat, nie podniosła się ona do dawnej świetności. Wtedy to święty Arczil w swoim walecznym sercu postanowił spo- tkać się (z Czicznaumem) i prosić o pokój dla swojego kraju, ochronę świątyń przed zrujnowaniem i o zaprzestanie prześladowania za wier- ność swojej wierze. I, mając nadzieję w Panu, postanowił poświęcić swoje ciało i duszę dla dobra chrześcijan. Stanął przed Czicznaumem, którego zwali Asim7. Gdy tylko (Asim) dowiedział się o jego przybyciu, rozradowa- ny, gościnny wyszedł mu naprzeciw i witał go z należnymi honora- mi. Spędzili cały dzień razem. Ów (Asim) docenił jego waleczność, spodobała mu się piękna twarz i postura Arczila. Minęło kilka dni, a Asim zwrócił się do Arczila: schlebiał mu, obiecywał dary i wzywał, by wyrzekł się wiary chrześcijańskiej i przyjął wiarę Saracenów8. Ale święty Arczil nie uległ pokusom i stanowczo odpowiedział: „Rze- kłeś, a ja, chociaż wysłuchałem słów twoich o odrzuceniu Chrystusa, Boga twórcy życia, Boga jedynego, który za nasze zbawienie przyjął w swoim ciele śmierć za nas, jeśli posłucham ciebie, wiedz, że gdy umrę, będę skazany na wieczne męki. The genesis of the Armenian nation has been examined in an earlier Study.1 Its nucleus, succeeding to the role of the Yannic nucleus ot Urartu, was the 'proto-Armenian,T Hayasa-Phrygian, people-state,2 which at first oc- cupied only a small section of the former Urartian, or subsequent Armenian, territory. And it was, precisely, of the expansion of this people-state over that territory, and of its blending with the remaining Urartians and other proto- Caucasians that the Armenian nation was born. That expansion proceeded from the earliest proto-Armenian settlement in the basin of the Arsanias (East- ern Euphrates) up the Euphrates, to the valley of the upper Tigris, and espe- cially to that of the Araxes, which is the central Armenian plain.3 This expand- ing proto-Armenian nucleus formed a separate satrapy in the Iranian empire, while the rest of the inhabitants of the Armenian Plateau, both the remaining Urartians and other proto-Caucasians, were included in several other satrapies.* Between Herodotus's day and the year 401, when the Ten Thousand passed through it, the land of the proto-Armenians had become so enlarged as to form, in addition to the Satrapy of Armenia, also the trans-Euphratensian vice-Sa- trapy of West Armenia.5 This division subsisted in the Hellenistic phase, as that between Greater Armenia and Lesser Armenia.

Introduction In the present article we consider military relations between Latins and Georgians (Iberians) in the period of the Crusades. The research draws on Georgian and non-Georgian medieval sources as well as relevant secondary historical publications and reassesses some of the opinions expressed in the works by Georgian researchers. One of the first mentions of Georgians (Iberians2) in the Medieval Latin sources is a letter of a 12th century Latin clergyman, Ansellus, the Cantor of the Holy Sepulchre, addressed to Gallon the Bishop of Paris [Ansellus 1902: 729-732]. However, the major source of information about the Georgians is Historia Orientalis by Jacques de Vitry, bishop of Acre (†1240) [Jacques de Vitry 2008]. The chronicle was written at the time of the Fifth Crusade.   • Noahidism Or B'nai Noah—Sons of Noah—Refers To, Arguably, a Family
    Noahidism or B’nai Noah—sons of Noah—refers to, arguably, a family of watered–down versions of Orthodox Judaism. A majority of Orthodox Jews, and most members of the broad spectrum of Jewish movements overall, do not proselytize or, borrowing Christian terminology, “evangelize” or “witness.” In the U.S., an even larger number of Jews, as with this writer’s own family of orientation or origin, never affiliated with any Jewish movement. Noahidism may have given some groups of Orthodox Jews a method, arguably an excuse, to bypass the custom of nonconversion. Those Orthodox Jews are, in any event, simply breaking with convention, not with a scriptural ordinance. Although Noahidism is based ,MP3], Tạləmūḏ]תַּלְמּוד ,upon the Talmud (Hebrew “instruction”), not the Bible, the text itself does not explicitly call for a Noahidism per se. Numerous commandments supposedly mandated for the sons of Noah or heathen are considered within the context of a rabbinical conversation. Two only partially overlapping enumerations of seven “precepts” are provided. Furthermore, additional precepts, not incorporated into either list, are mentioned. The frequently referenced “seven laws of the sons of Noah” are, therefore, misleading and, indeed, arithmetically incorrect. By my count, precisely a dozen are specified. Although I, honestly, fail to understand why individuals would self–identify with a faith which labels them as “heathen,” that is their business, not mine. Tbilisi (B/L/-) Breakfast at the hotel. Tour of the historic part of the city, which begins with a visit to the Metekhi Temple, which is one of the most famous monuments in Tbilisi. This temple was honored in the 13th century, on the very edge of the stony shore of the Kura and the former fortress and residence of the Georgian kings. The first Georgian martyr, Queen Shushanika Ranskaya, was buried under the arches of the Metekhi temple. Inspection of the Tbilisi sulfur baths, which are built in the style of classical oriental architecture. These are low, squat buildings, covered with semicircular domes with large glass openings in the center, serving as windows that illuminate the interior, as the baths themselves are below ground level. In the old days, people here not only bathed, but also talked, lingering until dawn, and the city matchmakers arranged special days on special days. In the baths gave dinner parties, concluded trade deals. Walk on the square Maidan, which was the main shopping area of the city and along small streets known under the common name "Sharden". Narikala Fortress, which is the most ancient monument, a kind of "soul and heart of the city." The date of construction of the fortress is called approximately IV century AD, so it stands from the foundation of the city itself. Later, the fortress was expanded and completed several times.

    Sergo Ratiani Differing Political Theologies of Differing Eras Terms and Problem Specification Carl Schmitt introduced the term ‘political theology’ into modern po- litical science. In his opinion, ‘all significant concepts of the [modern] science of politics are secularized theological concepts’.1 Political theology describes a method that makes it possible to detect traces of theology in modern po- litical discourse. The concept of political theology has become a subject of investigation for many scientists. For example, Armin Adam in his work ‘A History of Po- litical Theology’ talks of the broadening usage of this term.2 We are interested in that aspect of political theology that deals with Church-State relations and the theological foundations of the ideological side of these relations. This subject interests us from many angles: Firstly, the Church is a societal community and, from a certain perspec- tive, itself comprises a ‘polis’ that is based on theology. Secondly, there is the issue of relations between the ‘Kingdom of God’ and an earthly power, which comprises relations between a spiritual author- ity and a secular power. Thirdly, how the Church provides the functioning of certain political systems with a theological discourse. Fourthly, how the Church paves the way for its policy by elaborating a theological discourse. Fifthly, the problem of the extent to which one political system or an- other exerts influence on the Church’s theological discourse. We shall discuss this topic using the example of the Georgian Ortho- dox Church. We shall see what political theology it elaborated in differing eras and towards differing political systems.

  • Ishkani Irene Giviashvili
    Ishkani Irene Giviashvili Ishkani is located in the high mountainous village of the same name Işhan, overlooking once e beautiful valley of Chorokhi river. The village belongs today to the vilayet of Artvin, once being part of the historic Tao region of Medieval Georgian Kingdom. Ishkani functioned as an important ecclesiastical center until the Ottoman occupation of the region in 16-17th cc. On the site of Ishkani the remains of a grand domed church and a small hall chapel are survived; in recent years, during the excavations of the site remains of several other churches and structures were revealed. Studies of the Ishkani started with E. Takaishvili, who visited the monument during his field survey of 1917. Ishkani was largely discussed by W. Djobadze. Ishkani became a turning point in started the studies of Georgian monuments in Turkey. Dr. Mine Kadiroglu has dedicated her Ph.D. and later a monograph to Ishkani. Ishkani became a gateway through which the Turkish scholarship later was built. Ishkani is the first Georgian site in Turkey, where the restoration works started. The restitution project was made by Anfora Mimarlik Restorasyon, and the restoration works were conducted by the firm Osman Gulsum (2012-2016), the conservation works of the frescos and the floor was made by ArkIstanbul. Since the rehabilitation of the site, it has been closed and is inaccessible for the visitors. History of Ishkhani goes back to the VII century. According to The Life of Saint Grigol Khantsteli, written by Giorgi Merchule, Grigol together with his disciples visited the site and found the church abandoned and widowed.

An Exclusive Small Group Tour for Members of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Dear VMFA Members, Travel with us on an exclusive 17-day small group journey through the captivating countries of Georgia and Armenia, with the grand Caucasus Mountains as our backdrop. We begin in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. During our stay, we visit three UNESCO World Heritage sites, including Khor-Virap, with biblical Mt. Ararat as its backdrop. Nearby Dmanisi valley (80 km south-west of Tbilisi) the remnants of homo erectus are found, age of them is about 1,8 million years old. At present it is the oldest trace in Euro-Asia. Later on the Stone Age a man took the whole territory of Georgia. Former settlements of Ashel period (400–100 thousand years ago) are discovered as on the coast of the Black Sea as in the regions within highland Georgia. Approximately 6–7 thousands years ago people on the territory of Georgia began to use as the instruments not only the stone but the metals as well.

The process began in the fall of 2011, when the Language and Cross-Culture component of Peace Corps Georgia launched a Georgian Country and Culture Guide project and PCVs from different regions volunteered to do research and gather information on their specific areas. After the initial information was gathered, the arduous process of merging the researched information began. Extensive editing followed and this is the end result.
