October 2015 Traditional religion and political power: Examining the role of the church in Georgia, Armenia, Ukraine and Moldova Edited by Adam Hug The publication examines the political and social role of the Orthodox Churches in Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova and of the Armenian Apostolic Church. It explores the ways in which the churches have contributed to the development of national identities since the collapse of the Soviet Union and the role they play in civil society. The publication looks at the nature of the relationship between church and state; how the churches influence, support and challenge the secular authorities in their hold on power and their response to 'traditional values' issues such as LGBTI and minority faith rights. Nationalism, Nation Making, & the Postcolonial States of Asia, Africa, & Eurasia RONALD GRIGOR SUNY I have benefited enormously from Lowell Barrington’s clarifying essays on ethnicity and nationalism. His distinction insisting on territorial- ity for the nation but not for ethnicity is very useful. At the same time, in our many discussions, I have argued that his de‹nition of the nation remains, for my money, too objectivist. So I have amended the de‹nitions he offers in his introductory chapter as a prelude to my own discussion of nationalism after independence. My additions are in brackets. “What makes nations different from other groups,” writes Barrington, “is that they are collectives [who feel they are] united by shared cultural features (such as language, myths, and values) and the belief in the right to territorial self-determination. Put another way, they are groups of people [who believe they are] linked by unifying cultural characteristics and the desire to con- trol a territory that is thought of as the group’s rightful homeland.” My amendments here are meant to emphasize the unease I have about too concrete a notion of “cultural features” or “cultural characteristics.” Having heard all my life about the importance of preserving ethnic culture and remaining unsure about what that entailed, I subscribe to a notion -

Sergo Ratiani Differing Political Theologies of Differing Eras Terms and Problem Specification Carl Schmitt introduced the term ‘political theology’ into modern po- litical science. In his opinion, ‘all significant concepts of the [modern] science of politics are secularized theological concepts’.1 Political theology describes a method that makes it possible to detect traces of theology in modern po- litical discourse. The concept of political theology has become a subject of investigation for many scientists. For example, Armin Adam in his work ‘A History of Po- litical Theology’ talks of the broadening usage of this term.2 We are interested in that aspect of political theology that deals with Church-State relations and the theological foundations of the ideological side of these relations. This subject interests us from many angles: Firstly, the Church is a societal community and, from a certain perspec- tive, itself comprises a ‘polis’ that is based on theology. Secondly, there is the issue of relations between the ‘Kingdom of God’ and an earthly power, which comprises relations between a spiritual author- ity and a secular power. Thirdly, how the Church provides the functioning of certain political systems with a theological discourse. Fourthly, how the Church paves the way for its policy by elaborating a theological discourse. Fifthly, the problem of the extent to which one political system or an- other exerts influence on the Church’s theological discourse. We shall discuss this topic using the example of the Georgian Ortho- dox Church. We shall see what political theology it elaborated in differing eras and towards differing political systems. -
Ishkani Irene Giviashvili
Ishkani Irene Giviashvili Ishkani is located in the high mountainous village of the same name Işhan, overlooking once e beautiful valley of Chorokhi river. The village belongs today to the vilayet of Artvin, once being part of the historic Tao region of Medieval Georgian Kingdom. Ishkani functioned as an important ecclesiastical center until the Ottoman occupation of the region in 16-17th cc. On the site of Ishkani the remains of a grand domed church and a small hall chapel are survived; in recent years, during the excavations of the site remains of several other churches and structures were revealed. Studies of the Ishkani started with E. Takaishvili, who visited the monument during his field survey of 1917. Ishkani was largely discussed by W. Djobadze. Ishkani became a turning point in started the studies of Georgian monuments in Turkey. Dr. Mine Kadiroglu has dedicated her Ph.D. and later a monograph to Ishkani. Ishkani became a gateway through which the Turkish scholarship later was built. Ishkani is the first Georgian site in Turkey, where the restoration works started. The restitution project was made by Anfora Mimarlik Restorasyon, and the restoration works were conducted by the firm Osman Gulsum (2012-2016), the conservation works of the frescos and the floor was made by ArkIstanbul. Since the rehabilitation of the site, it has been closed and is inaccessible for the visitors. History of Ishkhani goes back to the VII century. According to The Life of Saint Grigol Khantsteli, written by Giorgi Merchule, Grigol together with his disciples visited the site and found the church abandoned and widowed. -

Each phoneme is rendered by a single letter, and vice versa, each letter is pronoun- ced by a corresponding individual phoneme. There are no exceptions either in vowels (5 in all) or consonants (28). However, this does not mean that there are no problems in transliterating Georgian pho- nemes in the Latin type, which has 26 graphemes: having seven graphemes in excess of Latin, the presence of specific Georgian phonemes differing from the sounds rendered in the Latin type call for a special study and solution of a number of practical tasks. Before I present this communication, the traditions and two systems must be delimited: 1) the traditional international scientific transcription system, accepted in philological circles and based on the Latin alphabet, with specific diacritical marks, and 2) the modern system of transli- teration using the Latin type but oriented to the English alphabet. The Svan Spoken Language Is Notable for Its Musicality
1 An Articulation Phenomenon in Svan Singing RepertoRepertoireire “… The Svan spoken language is notable for its musicality. Accentuation and intonation in Svan speech is so rich that no other Kartvelian language can be compared to it. Many things which have been either concealed or diminished are presented powerfully in the Svan language” [Zhghenti 1949:96] Introduction. Svaneti is a high mountainous region in the west of Georgia with a pronounced ethnical identity and sub-culture. Geographically, Svaneti is divided into two - Upper and Lower Svaneti. Similarly, the Svan musical repertoire can also be divided into two branches –Upper and Lower. The Svan language is one of the four Kartvelian languages, namely Georgian, Megrelian, Laz, and Svan. For historical and geopolitical reasons, the Svans have, over the centuries, maintained their unique identity through their traditions and customs. In spite of the fact that most Svan songs are in the Svan language, some Georgian language songs also exist in Svaneti. Due to different factors, including chiefly the performing style of Svan songs of certain types, as well as peculiarities of the musical language, it is worthwhile to raise the question of the bi-musicality of Svans. 1 In this regard, the following questions present themselves: * What is the character of the Svan musical repertoire? * Does a perceptible Svan musical sub-culture exist and if so, what is its nature? * Are there special peculiarities which distinguish Svan singing? * What are the characteristic features of Svan music, with special reference to the correlation between the music and lyrics (verbal texts) of Svan songs, etc.? 1 The concept of bi-musicality was introduced by Mental Hood. -

The Churches of Mtskheta: Acceptance and Rejection of Foreign Influence in the Church Architecture of Eastern Georgia Samantha Johnson Senior Art History Thesis December 14, 2017 The small town of Mtskheta, located near Tbilisi, the capital of the Republic of Georgia, is the seat of the Georgian Orthodox Church and is the heart of Christianity in the country. This town, one of the oldest in the nation, was once the capital and has been a key player throughout Georgia’s tumultuous history, witnessing not only the nation’s conversion to Christianity, but also the devastation of foreign invasions. It also contains three churches that are national symbols and represent the two major waves of church building in the seventh and eleventh centuries. Georgia is, above all, a Christian nation and religion is central to its national identity. This paper examines the interaction between incoming foreign cultures and deeply-rooted local traditions that have shaped art and architecture in Transcaucasia.1 Nestled among the Caucasus Mountains, between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, present-day Georgia contains fewer than four million people and has its own unique alphabet and language as well as a long, complex history. In fact, historians cannot agree on how Georgia got its English exonym, because in the native tongue, kartulad, the country is called Sakartvelo, or “land of the karvelians.”2 They know that the name “Sakartvelo” first appeared in texts around 800 AD as another name for the eastern kingdom of Kartli in Transcaucasia. It then evolved to signify the unified eastern and western kingdoms in 1008.3 Most scholars agree that the name “Georgia” did not stem from the nation’s patron saint, George, as is commonly thought, but actually comes 1 This research addresses the multitude of influences that have contributed to the development of Georgia’s ecclesiastical architecture. -

16. The Georgian–Abkhazian conflict Alexander Krylov I. Introduction The Abkhaz have long populated the western Caucasus. They currently number about 100 000 people, speak one of the languages of the Abkhazo-Adygeyan (west Caucasian) language group, and live in the coastal areas on the southern slopes of the Caucasian ridge and along the Black Sea coast. Together with closely related peoples of the western Caucasus (for example, the Abazins, Adygeyans and Kabardians (or Circassians)) they play an important role in the Caucasian ethno-cultural community and consider themselves an integral part of its future. At the same time, the people living in coastal areas on the southern slopes of the Caucasian ridge have achieved broader communication with Asia Minor and the Mediterranean civilizations than any other people of the Caucasus. The geographical position of Abkhazia on the Black Sea coast has made its people a major factor in the historical process of the western Caucasus, acting as an economic and cultural bridge with the outside world. Georgians and Abkhaz have been neighbours from time immemorial. The Georgians currently number about 4 million people. The process of national consolidation of the Georgian nation is still far from complete: it includes some 20 subgroups, and the Megrelians (sometimes called Mingrelians) and Svans who live in western Georgia are so different in language and culture from other Georgians that it would be more correct to consider them as separate peoples. Some scholars, Hewitt, for example,1 suggest calling the Georgian nation not ‘Georgians’ but by their own name, Kartvelians, which includes the Georgians, Megrelians and Svans.2 To call all the different Kartvelian groups ‘Georgians’ obscures the true ethnic situation. -

After the initial information was gathered, the arduous process of merging the researched information began. Extensive editing followed and this is the end result. Country Report on Human Rights Practices in Georgia Page 1 of 21 Georgia Country Reports on Human Rights Practices - 2006 Released by the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor March 6, 2007 The constitution of the Georgian republic provides for an executive branch that reports to the president, a unicameral Parliament, and an independent judiciary. The country has a population of approximately 4.4 million. In 2003 former president Shevardnadze resigned during what became known as the Rose Revolution. Mikheil Saakashvili won the presidency in 2004 with over 90 percent of the vote in an election, and his National Movement Party won a majority of seats in the Parliament. International observers determined that the 2004 presidential and parliamentary elections represented significant progress over previous elections and brought the country closer to meeting international standards, although several irregularities were noted. Civilian authorities generally maintained effective control of the security forces. The government's human rights record improved in some areas during the year, although serious problems remained. While the government took significant steps to address these problems, there were some reports of deaths due to excessive use of force by law enforcement officers, cases of torture and mistreatment of detainees, increased abuse of prisoners, impunity, continued overuse of pretrial detention for less serious offenses, worsened conditions in prisons and pretrial detention facilities, and lack of access for average citizens to defense attorneys. Other areas of concern included reports of government pressure on the judiciary and the media and - despite a substantial reduction due to reforms led by the president - corruption.
