Ishkani Irene Giviashvili Ishkani is located in the high mountainous village of the same name Işhan, overlooking once e beautiful valley of Chorokhi river. The village belongs today to the vilayet of Artvin, once being part of the historic Tao region of Medieval Georgian Kingdom. Ishkani functioned as an important ecclesiastical center until the Ottoman occupation of the region in 16-17th cc. On the site of Ishkani the remains of a grand domed church and a small hall chapel are survived; in recent years, during the excavations of the site remains of several other churches and structures were revealed. Studies of the Ishkani started with E. Takaishvili, who visited the monument during his field survey of 1917. Ishkani was largely discussed by W. Djobadze. Ishkani became a turning point in started the studies of Georgian monuments in Turkey. Dr. Mine Kadiroglu has dedicated her Ph.D. and later a monograph to Ishkani. Ishkani became a gateway through which the Turkish scholarship later was built. Ishkani is the first Georgian site in Turkey, where the restoration works started. The restitution project was made by Anfora Mimarlik Restorasyon, and the restoration works were conducted by the firm Osman Gulsum (2012-2016), the conservation works of the frescos and the floor was made by ArkIstanbul. Since the rehabilitation of the site, it has been closed and is inaccessible for the visitors. History of Ishkhani goes back to the VII century. According to The Life of Saint Grigol Khantsteli, written by Giorgi Merchule, Grigol together with his disciples visited the site and found the church abandoned and widowed. -

The Russian Empire is waiting for an opportune moment in its ambush position to torture the Odishi principality with its socio-economic, demographic policies, de facto and de jure, and turn the ancient trade routes between Georgia and Europe and Asia, namely the Turkish Sea into the Black Sea. At least in part, it turned into a lake in Russia. Under these conditions, the empire fully described the natural resources of Odishi, made it a raw material supplement, and applied its demographic transformation as well. 16. The Georgian–Abkhazian conflict Alexander Krylov I. Introduction The Abkhaz have long populated the western Caucasus. They currently number about 100 000 people, speak one of the languages of the Abkhazo-Adygeyan (west Caucasian) language group, and live in the coastal areas on the southern slopes of the Caucasian ridge and along the Black Sea coast. Together with closely related peoples of the western Caucasus (for example, the Abazins, Adygeyans and Kabardians (or Circassians)) they play an important role in the Caucasian ethno-cultural community and consider themselves an integral part of its future. At the same time, the people living in coastal areas on the southern slopes of the Caucasian ridge have achieved broader communication with Asia Minor and the Mediterranean civilizations than any other people of the Caucasus. The geographical position of Abkhazia on the Black Sea coast has made its people a major factor in the historical process of the western Caucasus, acting as an economic and cultural bridge with the outside world. Georgians and Abkhaz have been neighbours from time immemorial. The Georgians currently number about 4 million people. The process of national consolidation of the Georgian nation is still far from complete: it includes some 20 subgroups, and the Megrelians (sometimes called Mingrelians) and Svans who live in western Georgia are so different in language and culture from other Georgians that it would be more correct to consider them as separate peoples. Some scholars, Hewitt, for example,1 suggest calling the Georgian nation not ‘Georgians’ but by their own name, Kartvelians, which includes the Georgians, Megrelians and Svans.2 To call all the different Kartvelian groups ‘Georgians’ obscures the true ethnic situation. -

Gamkrelidze) ABSTRACT. The Amasya peace treaty was the first peace agreement signed between the Ottoman Empire and the Safavid State. In the Amasyan Peace agreement, the Ottoman Empire recognized the Safavid Empire as a State finally. According to the Amasya peace agreement, the Ottoman Empire and Iran divided countries of Transcaucasia and Near East between them. Iran took for itself: Kartli, Kakheti, the eastern part of Samtskhe-Saatabago with Akhaltsikhe, the eastern Part of Armenia with Yerevan, North and South Azerbaijan with Tabriz, eastern Kurdistan, whereas the Ottoman Empire took for itself: Imereti, Guria, Samegrelo, western Kurdistan. The Ottomans also took Kars, but they were not allowed to restore fortresses and strongholds there. According to the Amasya peace treaty, the attempt of Georgia’s territorial unification was frustrated. In 1555, the Ottoman-Iran peace treaty impeded the process of Georgia’s territorial unity, facilitating political separatism in it. By the Amasya peace treaty, the Ottoman Empire and Iran legitimized possession of the invaded countries. During the Ottoman-Iran wars in 17th-18th centuries, the Amasya treaty was the cornerstone for peaceful resolution of the territorial problems between the two states. © 2009 Bull. Georg. Natl. Acad. Zaal Kortua To study the issue of epidemic history in feudal Georgia (Epidemics and diseases common in western Georgia) Mankind has endured dozens of plagues and epidemics throughout the long history of its existence. Accurate information about the common diseases and the damage caused by them has certainly not been preserved. The nature and causes of diseases are closely related to the socio-political and economic development of society and are an integral part of it. Based on historical materials, this essay introduces to the readers those diseases which were spread in western Georgia in the feudal age, as well as the combating methods and ways, and their impact on the state of society and its consequences. The extremely humid climate of western Georgia created favourable conditions for the spread of various diseases. The authors of the ancient period unanimously mentioned the harmful effects of climate on human health. The locals, who were naturally adapted to living in humid and swampy environments, more easily tolerated the peculiarities of the climate. However, adapting was very difficult for newcomers. Travelers, Catholic missionaries, merchants, ambassadors, military personnel and all the other authors who came to Samegrelo pointed out the bad impact of the humid climate on human health, which often caused the local diseases. It should also be noted that different diseases were spread by foreign travelers and merchants, who brought various goods by sea, and in eastern Georgia by caravan. A relatively rich historiographical base for the study of this problem dates back to the seventeenth century. These are separate surveys, written documents of foreign travelers, missionary reports, and other historically significant documents. -

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by ILIAUNI Open Journal Systems (Ilia State University, Tbilisi) Ghia Nodia Components of the Georgian National Idea: an Outline Since the 1980s, theoretical literature on nationalism has abounded, its most influential stars including Ernest Gellner, Benedict Anderson, An- thony Smith and Rogers Brubaker. The main thrust has been to problema- tize the concept of nation as most people have tended to perceive it since the 19th century. To reject, that is, the romanticized idea of a nation as an age- old, pre-given entity one is supposed to speak of with awe. The new scholars of nations and nationalism disdain these approaches as “primoridialist” and “essentialist” - which, for them, is synonymous with unprofessionalism and inadequacy. On the other hand, most of Georgian intellectual tradition, in- asmuch as it is preoccupied with the concept of the Georgian nation, takes the essentialist-primordialist approach for granted - even when authors dis- play sharply critical attitudes towards different aspects of Georgian social or political realities. Georgian sociologists who teach contemporary theories of nationalism rarely apply them to Georgian material.1 The latter attempts are rare and mostly belong to foreign scholars.2 The aim of this article is to propose a tentative trajectory of the evolu- tion of the idea of the modern Georgian nation. I will not go into theoretical debates on nationalism but start by briefly summarizing my general approach towards the problem. Then I will proceed with a general description of two major components of the Georgian national idea: identity-building on the one hand, and the Georgian nation as a political project. -

IntRODUctION THE OSSETIAN EpIC “TALES OF THE NARTS” VASILY IvANOVICH ABAEV 1 w CYCLES, SubjECTS, HEROES In literary studies it is established that the epic poem passes through sev- eral stages in its formation. To begin we have an incomplete collection of stories with no connections between them, arising in various centers, at various times, for various reasons. That is the first stage in the formation of the epic. We cannot as yet name it such. But material is in the process of preparation that, given favorable conditions, begins to take on the out- lines of an epic poem. From the mass of heroes and subjects a few favorite names, events, and motifs stand out, and stories begin to crystallize around them, as centers of gravity. A few epic centers or cycles are formed. The epic enters the second stage of cycle formation. In a few instances, not all by any means, it may then attain a third stage. Cycles up to now unconnected may be, more or less artificially, united in one thematic thread, and are brought together in one consistent story, forming one epic poem. A hyper- cyclic formation, if one can use such a term, takes place. It may appear as the result of not only uniting several cycles, but as the expansion of one favorite cycle, at the expense of others less popular. This is the concluding epic phase. The transformation to this phase is frequently the result of individual creative efforts. Church – Consolidating the Georgian Regions Metropolitan Ananya Japaridze Saint Ilia the Righteous said from the very establishment of the holy Church of Georgia, that it presented a strong power consolidating the whole population of the state. It was not locked within the narrow ethnic borders but was the belonging of different ethnos residing in the state. According to Holy Writ, it never differentiated Hellenist from Jew, Georgian from non-Georgian, as its flocks were children of Georgia with mutual responsibility to the country and citizenship. Even Saint Nino, founder of the Georgian Church, came from Kapadokia. Saint of Georgian Church, martyr Razhden, and Saint Evstati Mtskheteli were Persian. Famous 12 fathers struggling against fire-worship and Monophysitism were Assyrian (Syrian). Neopyth Urbani Episcope was Arabian. The famous Saint Abo Tbileli came from Arabia too. The Saint Queen Shushanik was Armenian etc. The above list shows that Georgian church unified all citizens of the country in spite of their ethnic origin. At the same time, the Georgian church always used to create a united cultural space. The Georgian Church was consolidating regions and different ethnic groups of Georgia. The Georgian language was the key factor of Georgian Christian culture. Initially, Georgian language and based on it Georgian Christian culture embraced whole Georgia, all its regions. Divine services, all church acts, in mountains and lowlands from the Black Sea to Armenia and Albania were implemented only in Georgian language. Georgian language and Georgian culture dominated all over the Georgian territory. And just this differentiates old Georgia from the present one. It’s evident that the main flocks of Georgian Church were Georgians of West, South and East Georgia. -
