This definitive new book features original and revealing interviews with the group, plus key people close to them. It not only traces U2’s meteoric rise to fame, but explores the background and inspiration behind every song written by the band. A full analysis of U2’s long-awaited new album No Line on the Horizon makes up the last main chapter. U2: The Stories Behind the Song is a good book for anyone wanting to know more about U2. The book is very reasonably-priced, mainly due to its small size, compared to older editions. However, this is the fourth edition of the book, and compared to the previous edition, it is quite lacking. For starters, a lot of information from the previous edition is missing. Almost every song from Boy up to No Line on the Horizon is explained in detail, but a lot of the entries for older songs have been shortened, with less information that was previously available. I compared the two books side-by-side and noticed that some song entries had as much as entire paragraphs removed. Second, the layout is much less appealing. The previous edition was very colorful and full of photographs, while this edition is simply black text on white pages, with small photographs on some pages, and other pages entirely full of text. Third, there is not much new information in this edition that was not in the previous one. The only new information that was not available in the previous edition was information on the 11 songs from No Line on the Horizon, but each song is only explained for anywhere from one paragraph to one page. Entries for older songs take up anywhere from one to three pages. As far as additional content goes, there is a section that covers B-sides, non-album songs, the Passengers album, and The Million Dollar Hotel film soundtrack, just like in the old edition. Like the rest of the book, a lot of these entries are much shorter than the previous edition, and there is no new material found here. The B-sides range from Boy/Girl (1979) to Always (2002), but there are no B-sides covered newer than that. Electrical Storm, a single from the compilation album The Best of 1990-2000, was missing from the previous edition, and is not in this edition either. Other new songs missing include The Saints Are Coming and Window in the Skies, both from the compilation album U218 Singles.Basically, everything is this edition is lessened from the previous edition. There are less pictures and much less content. The book is much smaller, and even the title has been shortened. Previous editions were known as Into the Heart: The Stories Behind Every Song, while this edition is simply titled The Stories Behind Every Song. If you are looking for a great coffee table-like book about U2, I would stick with the old edition, U2: Into the Heart: The Stories Behind Every Song. If you already own the previous edition, I do not see a need to purchase the new edition, even you are a hardcore U2 fan like myself. It is currently still available on Amazon.com (and still in print, I believe), and while it is more expensive, it is definitely worth the price. Abstract This single-case study explores the use of popular music in response to the destruction of New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina in August, 2005. Using research in sociology of disaster and uses and gratifications theory in mass communication, data collected included original music written in response to the hurricane, major benefit concerts that aired in the wake, and re-appropriated music that developed new meaning when used in conjunction to the case. Analysis yielded that popular music was used to raise awareness, raise funds, and express emotion following the disaster. Common themes throughout include the impact of genre on how this was accomplished and the messages it yielded, the power of collective effervescence, and the importance of space and place when dealing with tragedy through music. ‘DO YOU KNOW WHAT IT MEANS TO MISS NEW ORLEANS?’ THE USE OF POPULAR MUSIC AFTER HURRICANE KATRINA by Jennifer Billinson B.A., Indiana University, 2006 M.A., Syracuse University, 2009 Dissertation Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Mass Communications Syracuse University August 2016 Copyright © Jennifer Billinson 2016 All Rights Reserved Table of Contents Chapter 1: Introduction p.

Seiler calls “contemporary conscious popular music”, which includes “music of any genre that focuses on social issues and perceived problems in society and may or may not include music that carries an overtly political message”. Consequently, much of the analysis of their songs claim that these are only a mere description of the terrible situation countries such as Ireland and the US were facing at that time. In this paper, however, I will examine the sociopolitical significance of U2’s songs as an appreciator of their cultural contribution and show that the events which formed the backdrop to some of U2’s most explicitly political songs in the 1980s – especially those included in War and The Joshua Tree – are etched indelibly into the text of both Ireland’s and America’s troubled colonial and political history.

  • Educating Popular Musicians: Insights Into Music Teaching and Learning on Higher and Further Education Programmes in Ireland
Educating Popular Musicians: Insights into Music Teaching and Learning on Higher and Further Education Programmes in Ireland by Miranda Cournane The University of Sheffield Department of Music July 2019 Submitted for the Degree of Master of Philosophy This page intentionally left blank 2 Abstract The aim of this thesis is to investigate approaches to the teaching and learning of popular music in higher and further education institutions in the Republic of Ireland. Despite the proliferation of popular music in contemporary culture, very little research has been conducted into how popular musicians are educated in Ireland. This research presents an analysis of case study data using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) as a framework. The research examines how students of popular music approach their learning and whether their needs are adequately supported in higher and further education settings. The research also investigates how the study of popular music is valued at institutional level. Findings highlight the importance of informal learning, authentic learning environments, technology, performance and industry engagement amongst popular music students and tutors. Findings also show an inconsistent approach to the facilitation of these learning needs within higher and further education institutions in Ireland. Disparate attitudes between students and teaching staff in relation to the value of studying music in higher education is also evidenced in the findings. The research makes an important contribution to the field of popular music education in Ireland and provides a number of recommendations for the delivery of popular music programmes in higher and further education. 3 Acknowledgements I would like to thank the teaching staff and music students who participated in my research study over the past number of years.
